10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 7)

 

1) In terms of team play the brightest spot in the 10th continues to be found in Mt. Sterling, where the Montgomery County Indians continue to roll against regional competition. The Indians went 2-0 this past week against 40th District competition, scoring 25 & 22 point home victories over Bourbon County & George Rogers Clark respectively. Happy Osborne's squad has now won 7 of their last 8 & own an overall record of 16-3 (8-0 against 10th Region competition).

 

2) In terms of individual play the brightest spot in the 10th also continues to be found in Mt. Sterling, where Omar Prewitt stands out on a talent-laden team. In last week's two wins the senior stud posted a pair of eerily similar stat-lines. Against Bourbon County Prewitt scored 31 points, grabbed 10 rebounds & dished out 6 assists. Against rival George Rogers Clark the Mr. Basketball candidate put up 31 points, grabbed another 10 boards & swatted 6 blocked shots.

 

3) The Scott Eagles returned to action last week after an idle Week 6. Brad Carr & crew started the week with a hard fought 1-point loss at Simon Kenton, but then rebounded with a pair of wins at home on Friday & Saturday (Dixie Heights 73-64 & Calvary Christian 60-34). The Eagles will play three more this week, hosting two 9th Region neighbors (Boone County & Holmes) before wrapping things up with a Saturday trip to Winchester to take on George Rogers Clark.

 

4) Harrison County notched a couple of nice home wins last week, turning back George Rogers Clark 58-47 & then holding off pesky Augusta 64-59. In the latter of the contests, the Breds put three players in double figures, led by by senior point guard Scott Kendall's 18 points. Larry Kendall's team will take to the road three times this week, playing at Campbell County, Bourbon County & South Laurel in the MLK Classic.

5) Pendleton County enjoyed a nice week, finishing 2-1 with a convincing victory over Calvary Christian & a nail-biting 1-point victory at Ryle. Sandwiched between those wins was a 13-point loss at the hands of Bishop Brossart. Wildcats standout Mason Monroe has officially become the school's second all-time scorer & is very near reaching the 2,000 points plateau for his illustrious career.

 

6) Teams from the 10th Region have not fared well this year when taking on 9th Region power Covington Holy Cross. Last week the Indians moved to 3-0 vs. upper-tier competition from the 10th with an impressive 55-41 win over Bishop Brossart. The Mustangs, widely considered the 10th's #2 team, joined Scott & Harrison County as teams the Indians have delivered an L.

 

7) Campbell County began last week with a nice victory on the road (55-51) over Conner. Two nights later the Camels managed to score only 35 points in a 14-point home loss to Boone County. Saturday night saw Aric Russell's squad put up a good fight, albeit in a losing effort, to Newport Central Catholic in a 68-64 loss.

 

8) Shawn Johnson & the Mason County Royals took to the road against the 16th Region twice last week, coming away victorious on both occasions, beating West Carter 69-47 on Tuesday & Ashland 73-67 on Friday. The junior big man totaled 21 points & 21 rebounds in the two games. The Royals have now played four times on the road against the 16th, winning all four. Boyd County & East Carter were the other two teams.

 

9) Robert Goodman's Bourbon County Colonels went just 1-2 this past week, but perhaps more importantly, senior Chris Gillispie's numbers have started to rise. Gillispie put up a pair of 22 point performances against Nicholas County & Frankfort. Snoop Johnson has been outstanding for the Colonels all season long, but a healthy & productive Gillispie may help the Colonels get closer to fulfilling their pre-season expectations.

10) The 10th's Class "A" teams have all played their final tune-ups in preparation for this week's Regional tournament. Nicholas County hosts the tourney this year & the heavy favorite to bring home the title is Bishop Brossart. To earn a trip to Frankfort, the Mustangs will have to win four games because they drew the "play-in" game (tonight vs. Calvary Christian). Most prognosticators believe the only realistic barrier standing in the way of Mike Code's crew is Jason Hinson's Augusta Panthers.

Scott just beat Boone by 32. I think it is safe to say the Eagles are back where they should be.

Looking at the website , I noticed Omar Prewitt is 45 rebounds from tying Billy Ray Fawns rebounding record of 972 rebounds.
