This is just another example of how difficult it is to be thought of as an elite team when you play a very difficult schedule. Outside of the 7th and 11th regions, and to some extent the 6th, no region has more than 2-3 teams who are top 20 teams at any given time. This means that teams in these regions have several games against teams who are not by any means in the top 20 in the state, or so-called "gimme" games. Ranking teams in this region basically consists of taking their sample of 5-6 games against very strong teams, and evalutain the results. If this team is well-coached and motivated for these games, they will be ranked highly, and not penalized for playing less than their best against lesser teams and getting close wins. However, playing a schedule of 10-12 strong teams means more chances to be penalized if you have an off game.

 

Rankings are pretty meaningless, then, since all teams have a different sample of games to evaluate. Who's to say that Henry Clay's loss to Bryan Station wasn't a better performance than Team A's 6 point win over a 2-10 teams?
