  • CLARK COUNTY 75, PAINTSVILLE 71 (OT). Clark County had a chance to win in regulation, but it couldn’t find a shot. The Cardinals didn’t waste their opportunity in overtime, however. Down 71-70 with just over a minute left, they got a rebound basket from Luke Sharrock, a free throw from Riley Caudill and a clinching steal and layup from Damion King. Malachi Israel led the winners with 16 points and six assists. Caudill had 15 points and five rebounds, and King added 12 points. Trevor Tiller’s 23 points paced Paintsville

Clark County's win in OT highlights Thursday's Classic games

It's a whole new ball game for two-time defending 10th Region champ Clark County this winter. After back-to-back 30-win seasons, the Cardinals are in rebuilding mode.

So when Clark County found itself in a tight game against Paintsville in the Republic Bank Holiday Classic on Thursday, Coach Scott Humphrey could see his inexperienced team tighten up.

"We've been getting our heads beat in, so we were in unchartered waters — in the lead," Humphrey said with a laugh. "We were just hoping we could hang on."

Clark County did just that, pulling out a 75-71 victory in overtime.

The Cards wasted a chance to win in regulation. With the score tied 63-63 and a minute left, they had the last possession. Humphrey called two timeouts in the last nine seconds, but his team still couldn't find a shot.

Paintsville led 69-66 with 2:30 left in overtime, and 71-70 with 1:40 remaining.

But Clark County answered the challenge. It got a rebound basket from Luke Sharrock, a free throw from Riley Caudill, and a clinching steal and layup from Damion King to pull out the victory.

"The kids are putting in the time and the effort, so I'm happy they got to finish with a win," Humphrey said.
