Game of the Week – In what could be a preview of a region tournament showdown in March, Hopkinsville held off Henderson County 76-70 in a rare western Kentucky Wednesday game Dec. 5. Henderson cut a 17-point deficit to two points in the second half but didn’t have enough to push past the Tigers. Sophomore Jaqualis Matlock had 11 points and nine rebounds for Hoptown, while David Simmons scored 17 points for Henderson County.

Going overtime, again…and again…and again – Henderson County outlasted Bryan Station 81-78 in a school-record five overtimes Saturday at the Kentucky Bank Classic at Bourbon County. Neither team scored in the third overtime, and Henderson outscored the Defenders 14-11 in the final OT period. Kaleb Duckworth scored 14 points for Henderson County but left the game with an ankle injury.

Last of the unbeatens – Trigg County (4-0) is the lone unbeaten team left in the region. However, the teams they have beaten are just 4-17. The Wildcats hammered Livingston Central 91-36 Friday, getting 32 points from their bench. The 55-point margin was the largest Trigg win in the 122-game series history. Senior guard Deonquez Nance is averaging 23.5 points and six rebounds through four games.

Close but no cigar – University Heights has dropped their first three games by a total of 14 points. Their 42-41 loss to Union County ended with two missed free throws and a missed putback in the final seconds. Their other two losses are to Fourth Region contender Russellville and unbeaten Apollo.

Fast start – Jarvis Irby scored 27 points to lead Christian County past Paducah Tilghman 80-64 Friday. After an opening season loss to Montgomery Bell Academy (TN), Christian County has responded with wins over top five teams in the First (Tilghman) and Second (Madisonville) Regions.

Hopkinsville teams on the big stage – Hopkinsville, Christian County, and University Heights Academy all play host to the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic that gets underway Friday. The event rotates between the three schools over the two-day event. Among the teams to compete are Bowling Green, St. Mary, Montgomery County, and LaVergne, Tennessee.

Games of the Week – Monday – UHA at Hopkinsville – The Blazers look for their first win against the defending region champion. The teams only met once last year, with Hoptown claiming an eight-point win.

Friday – Trigg County at Lyon County – There aren’t many series in the state that are closer than this one, and the stakes are pretty high in the latest contest. Both teams are 2-0 in district play, and the winner gets the inside track at a number one seed in the district tournament. Friday’s game will be the 143rd in the series between the schools that dates back to 1948. Each school has won 71 games, and only 45 points separates them when the scores of every game are tallied. In fact, 29-percent of the games in this series have been decided by five points or less.

Great read.
