4pointplay
Hoop Dirt is reporting that Frankie Smith former head coach at Saginaw Valley State and assistant at Miami (Ohio) will be the new head coach at Sheldon Clark HS? He resigned at Saginaw Valley in the spring to take a HS job in West Virginia and is now moving to accept this position. I know nothing except what is being reported on Hoop Dirt??
CBDV
Coach Smith is the HC at Sheldon Clark. West Virginia as a whole does not pay very well for teaching or coaching.
CBDV
Current coaching salaries in West Virginia - http://boe.mono.k12.wv.us/uhs/athletics/coachingsalaries/coachingsalaries.htm Mingo Co. (Where Mingo Central is at) teaching salaries from 2008 - (A.B. is bachelors) http://wvde.state.wv.us/finance/data/2008/Prof.%20Pers%20Salary%20Sch%20-%20Mingo%2008.pdf There is a reason West Virginia basketball as a whole is not very good and it is pay and length of season - 22 games. Interesting hire. I can see SC being an upgrade over MC but I'd thought that a former college HC and mid major Asst would want to stay at that level. Anybody know why he left MU? Did he resign or leave with Charlie?

I must have missed this one or it didn't get a lot of play on BGP but it seems like it would be a pretty good deal for Sheldon clark to get a former D2 head coach to accept the position. I guess my only concern is that he just started the position in WV and could not have made a whole lot of people happy when he left?
CBDV
Coach Smith is from Chattaroy in Mingo Co. His family and his wife's family are both still in the area and getting older. My understanding is that he wanted closer to them. He is a very good coach, but from a pure coaching standpoint I don't know if SC is an upgrade. Tough district and even tougher place to coach. The reported $30k raise though was the tipping point. SC is known to run off coaches.
