Scott County 40 George Rogers Clark 6

Featured Replies

Will have to say that this GRC team has grit and lots of heart. They just don't give up.

Congrats to Scott Co...great team.

This is a much closer score than I would have expected a week ago. No rest for GRC as they get Harlan Co next week.

Week 10 can't get here soon enough!

Last week it was Elijah Bell. This time it was Kevo Edwards.

The Scott County running back rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to a 40-6 victory over George Rogers Clark Friday night at Cardinal Stadium.

Although Edwards didn’t match Bell’s 369-yard effort in the Cards’ 53-36 loss at Henry Clay a week ago, his presence was a difference-maker in the battle of the birds. He set the tone with 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half.

“They’re a quality football team,” Clark coach Steven Collins said of the Cardinals, ranked No. 3 in this week’s Class 6A prep football poll. “With their offense, you’ve got to be disciplined and you’ve got to read your keys. As soon as you start expanding and looking at other things, you’re going to get lost. You can’t give a good team like that a lot (early).”

Edwards had a hand in two of Scott County’s first three scores in the first half. Edwards rushed for 56 yards on the visiting Cards’ first possession, resulting in Dierries Dumphord’s 2-yard touchdown run. Edwards also had a 22-yard score and a 54-yard touchdown in the opening half as Scott County built a 19-0 advantage and led 26-0 at the half.

Scott County outgained the hosts 312-111 in the first half. The visiting Cardinals attained most of that yardage with 244 yards on the ground.

Clark’s biggest gain of the first half was Darian Skinner’s 40-yard strike to D’avon Marshall in the second quarter. C.D. Spight added 32 yards on four carries in the opening half. Spight was the top runner on offense for Clark with 74 yards on seven carries. Fullback Luke Sharrock contributed with 42 yards on 11 attempts. Marshall added a 32-yard run in the third quarter on a third-and-short.

Edwards struck again for the guests when he crossed the goal line on a 36-yard run to open the second half. The score by Edwards gave the guests a 33-0 advantage with 8:39 remaining in the third frame.

Clark’s Khamarkis Blanton sacked Scott County quarterback Clay McKee for a 5-yard loss in the third quarter.

The hosts prevented the shutout on Spight’s 5-yard run with 11:06 remaining. Darian Farris highlighted the successful drive with a 17-yard run. Farris finished with 34 yards.

Christian Cooke recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff at the Scott County 31-yard line, but Clark turned the ball over on downs. The guests responded with a touchdown and 26 unanswered points in the first half.

In the second half, Clark’s defense got into a rhythm and limited the visitors to 135 total yards and two touchdowns during the final two quarters.

Be wary of what you wish for. This Scott Co team (that just beat GRC) isn't the same as Ryle.
