Mayfield scorches Murray ‘D’ before deluge

 

MURRAY — Three touchdowns

in three games was the number on

Murray’s defensive ledger.

Mayfield doubled it in less than

15 minutes, then added one more

for good measure.

Scoring on four of their fi rst

fi ve possessions, the Cardinals

made quick work of asserting

themselves as western Kentucky’s

top dogs, taking a 28-7 halftime

lead on Murray on Friday night

in front of what started out as a

standing-room-only crowd at Ty

Holland Stadium.

The game was called on account

of lightning with 2:49 remaining

in the third quarter, with Mayfi eld

holding the same lead after stopping

the Tigers’ fi rst drive of the

second half on downs just outside

the red zone.

At the time of the stoppage,

Mayfi eld had picked up three fi rst

downs of its own and had the ball

with a fi rst down at the Murray

43.

After a delay of more than an

hour, offi cials and coaches from

both teams agreed to resume the

game at 3 p.m. today.

Mayfi eld, the consensus No. 1

team in Class A, got four fi rst-half

rushing touchdowns from Jonathan

Jackson, who had rushed for

140 yards on 14 carries when the

game was called.

Jackson fumbled on the fi rst

series, but atoned for it with his

usual brand of power running,

and quarterback Luke Guhy was

able to take advantage of a Murray

defense that was down two

starters and had two freshmen at

cornerback.

Guhy was 7-for-11 for 94 yards

in the fi rst half, all but one pass

and a fi ve-yard hookup with

Te’arron Sherrill going to senior

Jordan Brown.

Murray — ranked fi fth in Class

2A — also lost a pair of fumbles,

leading to a pair of short scoring

drives that put the Cardinals

ahead 28-0 with 7:13 left in the

second period.

Boone led a late fi rst-half scoring

march, with a 23-yard run

followed by a 26-yard hookup to

Dante Howard on a fourth down.

A 6-yard pass to Dylan Upchurch

with 30 seconds left in the half fi -

nally put Murray on the board.

This game in my opinion should have been called, Murray has zero chance of winning and both teams assume some risk by playing this afternoon.
