Are they nuts, or just plain stupid?

Note: Up on my soapbox

Are they nuts, or are they just plain stupid?

That is a youth (my guess) 8-10 year old girls fast pitch (my guess again) recreational team coaches, that were having practice at 7:30pm at Lincoln Woods Softball fields tonight Thursday June 28th. My truck temperature gauge that is pretty accurate said 98 degrees at the time and the Huff Reality sign on my way to the park read 100.

No wonder the KHSAA wants to take over the Middle School programs as if the kids parents and coaches won't use common sense, who is going to protect the kids from those who should but don't seem to care about the kids and their safety!

Back down off my soapbox

Here is the issue, if it is recreation league nothing any school type association could do. It would be up to each recreational league to have its set up policies for these type of days.

The Boone Co. at NewCath doubleheader for tonight was called off due to the heat and I would imagine the rest of the HS summer league games were also. I'm kind of glad beacause I was out in this heat all day working and the last thing I really wanted to do is sit through two tonight. I think these coaches could have used better judgement considering the temp/heat index.

My vote goes to both, nuts and stupid.

There are 10,000 plus girls out in Co this week playing in 100 degree heat and wildfires everywhere. That being said cancel practice!!

As someone currently in that 100 degree plus heat here in Colorado I can tell you that the dry heat here is nothing like the humid heat at home. As for those in and around Colorado Springs, where the big fire is at, all outdoor park and rec activities are cancelled due to air quality, not heat.

I understand that but 100 is a 100!! The girls out there could be in it for 8 to 10 hours compared to a 2 hour practice.

Yes 100 is 100 but 60/80 percent humidity compared to 10/20 percent humidity, there is indeed a huge difference in how that 100 feels like!

And one day when they start playing for their HS teams, they and their parents are going to find out that the KHSAA doesn't take chances just for one game or one day of practice in the course of keeping them safe.

It also seemed to me that each one of those kids wore a helmet tonight when they batted to protect themselves and I just wonder why the coach and parents think that is important? Oh for the safety of the kids....right.......

I agree the practice should have been cancelled. Most kids now a days play a lot more games outside of Khsaa than they do for. Summer ball if they cancel it cost them money. In HS if they practice or play in it, it is possible it would cost them money.

??? :idunno:

I can't recall ever having a practice cancelled because it was too hot. Maybe a shorter practice, maybe more water breaks, maybe less (or no) conditioning, but don't recall practice being cancelled because it was too hot.

I'm with you Crazy. This is a 10-u rec practice, not a Bear Bryant preseason conditioning program. The most energy any of these girls will put out will be running over the hill at Lincoln Woods to pick up an overthrow. Now if mom sends a sack of McDonalds and a supersize Coke with them there might be a problem.

Fun, but true.

You are correct CC we never canceled practice in my home town either when I was a kid!

Then again 99.9% of kids back in my day didn't live in AC.

Back then, who cared if you took a shot to the head and got dizzy and threw up, get back in there! A concussion from playing sports? No way boy, take it like a man!

Back in the day we used to drink water and eat salt tablets! What Athletic Trainer, coach, would allow you to do that today?

Back in the day we swam in the Ohio River right behind the District 1 Sanitation Plant, what adult would allow a child to that in this day and age!

Ever hear of Polio? Back in the day before Dr. Sabin invented his vaccine, I knew a kid who contracted polio and I knew kids after the vaccine was made available, parents who wouldn't allow their children to eat the sugar cubes because they were sure it would hurt and not help.

We get smarter, wiser and more educated about what we should and shouldn't do to protect ourselves and our children.

Practicing in 98 degrees temps with who knew how high the heat index was, just didn't make sense for 8-10 year old kids in this day and age!

C'mon, oldguy.

Back in the day, all of the kids had good fundamentals, right?

Back in the day, kids spent all day playing backyard baseball/basketball, right?

Back in the day, kids didn't eat potato chips and play Playstation all day, right?

In your original post, you said the practice was at 7:30 p.m. Generally speaking, that's well after the hottest part of the day. With proper training/education, coaches & parents will be able to detect when/if a child is dehydrated or overheated. Following that training/education, coaches will cut down the length of practices, add water breaks, and limit conditioning.

Yes, it's hot out. It's been hot every summer for as long as I can remember. That never stopped ANY of my sports teams from practicing or competing. But then again, I'm sure many of these kids would be perfectly content in their basements playing PS3!
