In the Oklahoma-USF game the runner on first left early and the umpire stuck out his arm for a delayed dead ball. Is this not an automatic dead ball and immediate out? What would be the reason for a delayed dead ball?

I always thought it was an dead ball period, No pitch

I read that the NCAA has a new rule this year. Runner is out. Delayed dead ball. Defense gets the choice of the result of the play or a "no pitch." Runner is out regardless of which option is chosen.

That makes no sense what if someone got hurt. Whats the advantage?>

Thank You, that explains it. Does make sense if it were a fly ball, 6-4-3 dp or K it would actually be penalizing the defense if it were an immediate dead ball.
