  1. Was Mahan really told he would be moved to center?

My source close to the team tells me that Mahan wanted more touches with the football. The coach gave Mahan a playbook to learn the QB position. Mahan never learned the playbook so he couldn't be trusted to know the QB responsibilities in their spread offense. Next, their coach placed him in a skill position, but Mahan was "attempting" to catch the ball several times with one hand. Plus, he made a lackluster effort on 4th and goal to make it into the endzone. Both of these were witnessed by many in the Raceland game.

Since the skill positions didn't work for Mahan, the coach gave him the opportunity to have more touches by becoming a center -- after all, the center touches the ball as many times as the QB does. Mahan initially agreed to the position in front of the team, but backed out minutes later when he refused to receive the wristband cards for the center position.

Mahan made a choice not to become center (putting himself before the team) and left the team.

  2. The final score was 30 - 6, not 33 - 6, as the topic indicates. I was not at the game, but sources tell me that Greenup County's freshmen were completely flat in the first quarter as Raceland smoked to a 6 - 0 lead.

I heard that the turnovers were costly -- especially the interception deep in Greenup territory in the 2nd half.

Greenup's Power I offense was the difference in the game. My understanding during the JV game was that Raceland blitzed and sacked Greenup's QB all game long while in the spread. But, the freshmen game had a different story with the Power I taking away Raceland's ability to put pressure on the QB.

  3. I think gennup just needs to start playing football the way Greenup county plays football. I mean people can blame the coaches and parents as much as they want but until we stop excepting losing is when we will win! I think we might finally got our heads on start and we will win at least 4-5 games in the rst of the regular season. My prediction is Greenup makes playoffs for the first time in a few years!

Greenup is guaranteed to make the playoffs due to only 4 teams in their district.

  4. Wow, and you know this how? Hopefully, there are a few boys that gives effort in these meets.

Raceland and Russell were the big winners at the meet this past year. I think that Rowan County, Lawrence County, and West Carter also participated. GCHS had a few successful participants, but not many players in all weight divisions.

The effort each day in the weightroom before the meet is more important than the meet itself. I assume that you have a son on GCHS' football team (possibly number 55). You could possibly ask him if the players, including himself, give 100% in the weightroom each day.

  5. Why does freshman/jv success not equal any , and I do mean any, success at the varsity level at GC ? Just 1 or 2 years ago the frosh went undefeated , and close to being unscored on, now it appears the young ones are rolling again , but when the varsity comes along they lose big ? any ideas ? LB

Visit Raceland's weightlifting meet in the offseason and you'll see why GCHS does not carry success very well from the freshmen to the varsity level. They always are in last place at these meets due to the players' lackluster efforts during strength and conditioning workouts throughout the year.

  6. Ok, but who wants to read all of that, This is about Football and you might want to post that in the halls ways at Greenup.

If the information given to me was correct -- Raceland had 2 individuals ejected from the game, as well.

If you don't have the patience to read an article about discipline in the home, then that is your choice. But, FBALL made a comment pertaining to discipline. Therefore, it applies to this situation as well as to football in general.

  7. Sounds like there is a lack of discipline.

You are correct FBALL, but discipline begins in the home -- not on a football team.

    Discipline Begins at Home

Cynthia Lucas, a clinical psychologist in Nashville, says "The way a child is disciplined at home is important to make them receptive to authority figures. If the system is in place at home, then they will be more receptive to the same system in the classroom. They must understand that the ultimate decisions are made by adults."

In this age of communication, although parents have so much information and resources at their fingertips, the many conflicting "expert" opions can leave parents confused about their roles. Gloria DeGaetano writes in her book, Parenting Well in a Media Age ($18.95, Personhood Press), that the media has sent a "message to parents, reflected through the lens of the industry-generated culture that they are ridiculously up tight and stupid if they try to exercise any authority in relationship to their children. Unfortunately this attitude has been supported by many 'experts'." If there is confusion in the home about authority, it will be just the same when the children go to school.

Megan, an elementary school teacher in the Metro school system, says, "Discipline starts in the home. How can we do our job if parents don't follow through at home or back up the teacher? It is not just one child we are responsible for, but 20 others in the same classroom."

Lucas adds, "It is very stressful for a teacher who has several children in a classroom to handle several different kinds of discipline issues. We are very busy today and many parents expect schools to teach the basics of how to behave when those systems need to already be in place before children are even of school age. It helps everyone have a better experience (at school) when teachers aren't expected to teach basic behavior."

Kathy Lee, a mastered guidance counselor at Davidson Academy, agrees that the quality of learning that takes place can become compromised. She says, "It ties the teacher's hands. She spends so much time disciplining that she loses time devoted to teaching. It's not fair to the other children."

  8. Raceland had alot of key players out last week, including their top three running backs. I was told all three are playing this week. Expect Raceland to come out and play their best game so far.

    Raceland-35

    Greenup-7

    lol

    I don't think so...

Who does Raceland think they are playing, "Greenup County School for the Blind?"

  9. Boyd County (0-4)

    East Carter (2-2) 7 Boyd County 0

    Russell (4-0) 29 Boyd County 20

    Breathitt County (4-0) 34 Boyd County 14

Pike County Central (3-1) 33 Boyd County 14

    Lawrence County (0-4)

Coal Grove, OH (3-1) 28 Lawrence County 20

    Belfry (4-0) 51 Lawrence County 20

    Sheldon Clark (4-0) 20 Lawrence County 0

    Prestonsburg (3-1) 42 Lawrence County 12

  10. I am from that area. It is that small. Usually those high schools in that small area...Chesapeake, Fairland, South Point, Coal Grove all have really small independent districts. Usually around 100 per class maybe a little more. Ironton is and always has been bigger.

Did you take a look at OHSAA's website that has the figures?

    Obviously, not.

  11. Whats your thoughts on this game?

Ill say this one may be a good game?

South Point, OH (0-3) vs. Greenup County (0-2)

    South Point:

Johnson Central (3-0) 34 South Point, OH 0

Wheelersburg, OH (2-1) 23 South Point, OH 0

Waverly, OH (3-0) 38 South Point, OH 21

    Greenup County:

    Russell (3-0) 45 Greenup County 18

Letcher County Central (2-1) 27 Greenup County 20

    My prediction:

    Greenup County 28

    South Point 21

  12. I've been thinking that Rashard Carter deserves a nickname, and I have found one. There used to be a hockey player name "Rocket Richard" Richard pronounced (Rishard). I cant remember who he played for, because I dont like hockey, but nevertheless I like the name. So from now I dub Rashard Carter - ROCKET RASHARD.

    Maurice "The Rocket" Richard

    * Born 4 August 1921 at Montreal, Quebec.

    * Died 27 May 2000.

    * Played 18 NHL seasons from 1942 to 1960

    * Inducted into the HHOF 1961

  13. The definition of lame is the following:

1.) Moving with pain or difficulty on account of injury, defect, or temporary obstruction of a function; as, a lame leg, arm, or muscle.

2.) To some degree disabled by reason of the imperfect action of a limb; crippled; as, a lame man.

3.) Hence, hobbling; limping; inefficient; imperfect.

Does that make clearer the condition of Greenup's QB? He is doubtful for Friday night's game following the Ironton scrimmage.

There is turmoil in Lloyd between the players and coaches, as well as among the overall program to include the boosters and administration. All parties involved deny the existence of a problem due to the upcoming game against Russell. I will not discuss the matter further.

By the way, Russell appears to have the edge with conditioning as well. I heard that Greenup has not run any sprints during conditioning or practice this year.
