  1. Better for this to happen in July rather than September.

Tough kid, he should be fine when it counts.

Next man up, the team will have to improve to fill the void early on.

Really hate to hear this. Sam is such a good kid and a leader on and off the field.

Really hope its 6 weeks or less, for Sam and his family's sake. He will be driving them crazy if he starts missing football games. Prayers out to a quick recovery for Sam.

  2. How does the new proposal affect the Parochial schools that field JR. High Football programs, even though they don't have middle schools. In NKY that would affect NewCath, Brossart, CovCath and potentially Holy Cross? (Kids other than those from Holy Cross play Jr. High Footbal)

Will they be able to particpate in the same league's? How will this affect who plays MS football at NewCath but basketball at St. Mary or St. Joes? Which High School are they locked into?

  3. I think Football is the greatest game every invented. I played into College and my son played from the time he was 7 until he graduated from HS. If I had another son or if I have grand children I would love for them to play football. I think that proper coaching, along with proper equipment and proper training/conditioning can significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries.

I am a bit skeptical about all of the "research" that now points to Head trauma sports injuries as the cause of other issues later in life. There is very little money made for researchers who cannot tie their findings to a cause of some type.

My father experienced Dimentia the last year or so of his life. They told us he did not have Alzheimer's disease. At that time the Dr's told us that cases of Dimentia had increased 10 to 20 fold over the past 20 years. They told us there were as many as 20 different potential causes of the increase ( more awareness, people living longer, Chemicals in our food, C-sections etc.) They also told us that about 75% of the research funding was being targeted/marketed at Alzheimers Disease. The reason was that by finding a villain they are able to acquire backing both financially and politically.

I am not sure that Head Trauma is not being named a villain in this case.

Now having said all of that, if my son, grand son etc. were to experience head trauma either on or off the football field I would be cautious to a fault before ever allowing him to return to the field.

I think that the points about College and Pro Football (as much as I love watching) are valid. The pounding taken by adults over a 4 year (college), or longer ( pro) career seem to have a true cause and effect relationship to certain types of diseases experienced later in life. The problem is that the sample size of ex-nfl and ex-college football players probably isn't great enough to garner the money needed to do the research necessary. To get that money the pool of potential victims have now been broadened to include both HS and Youth football.

To summarize I am not saying their shouldn't been a concern about Head trauma injuries in football, hockey, bball etc. What I am saying is that the pendulum always swings to far. Right now its to the point that they are so overly aware of it that it has become the Villain, to the extent it does not warrent.

  4. That's a good one. I think that Ziegler is still #1 at RB due to who he played against and what he accomplished.

If we go just off of high school careers, then he'd probably be in there.

Forgot about Mike Robinson. I was aware at college for Jr. and Sr. year. He was a dominating HS player. Speed and strength were as good as you see in HS. I would revise my previous list and slot him in right behind Billy Vogt.

    1) Ziegler

    2) Frank Jacobs

    3) Billy Vogt

    4) Mike Robinson

    5) Keith Rushell

  5. #1 Ziegler. Never saw him play. He was legend.

#2 Frank Jacobs. Cornerstone of one of NC's best defenses (1984: 6.2 pts a game). Dominating noseman. At split end he was hard to stop. 6''6' 230 and usually the fastest guy on the field. Jumped like a basketball player to go get it. Easy to throw to. Gary Gabbard had a great career throwing to him.

#3 Greg "Red" Kremer. Old school middle linebacker. Left NC leading tackler for a career. Played both ways two years (center and inside backer). National merit scholar. Broke down tape better than the coaches. He knew where the ball was going on every play, got there, and made tackles. Can't say enough about his intellect and how it impacted games. Captain of one of the best defenses in NC history. Went to Rose Hulman and became the program's leading tackler.

#4 Jeff Brady. Great jr. year. Out seven games of his sr. year with a broken leg. Came back and played well. Had a better college career and an even better pro career. Put his heart in an ant and your would have a great football player.

#5 Mike Kiernan. Unbelievable physical specimen. Ridiculous strength. When he was healthy, he dominated. Seemed to play hurt most of the time.

    Honorable mention: Mike Kelly.

IF were talking about what they did in High school then there is one or two names that needs to be added to the list.

One would be Billy Vogt. Billy dominated NKY his senior season both on offense and defense. I don't have the stat's in front of me, but he rushed for over 1000 yards with something like a 7.8 yard per carry. He also was the leading reciever on a very good NewCath team. In addition he was an outstanding defensive back one of the leaders in Interceptions both his Jr. and Sr. seasons. Billy then went on to star at Morehead St. as a db and Kick returner.

The second would be Keith Ruschell. Keith was an unbelievable LB who though undersized was an absolute beast in the middle of the field. The Defensive player of the year is named after Keith and rightly so. In my 45 + years of watching NewCath Football Keith was the most disruptive LB I can remember. Keith received a scholarship to Xavier, who then dropped football after his Freshman year. Keith sadly died in his early twenties from a fall at Red River Gorge.

    My list would be:

    1) Ziegler

    2) Frank Jacobs

    3) Billy Vogt

    4) Keith Rushell

  6. Grilling a steak, burger etc, while drinking a cold one, listening to the Reds game on the radio. Love it, means spring/summer is here to me.

Another is laying on a sleeping bag with one of my kids on warm and clear summer's night looking up at the stars. Talking with them about whatever... looking for shooting stars!

  7. I was a DBA for years, but have been in Management for about the past 15. DBA skills are a very portable in the business world. Even more so than developers or System analyst. Very good developers and System Analyst usually have become "semi-" experts in their field. If they are working the Consumer Package Goods industry, they usually have picked up key business processes and how those should be done. Same with someone in IT supporting Medical, or Insurance etc. DBA's while it always helps knowing/understanding the business you are supporting, it is not as critical.

When I am looking to hire Developers I look as much at the Business knowledge as I do the technical side. For DBA's that I look much more at the Technical expertise.

You can learn about 80% of what you need to be a successful DBA (especially SQL Server) in a relatively quick time (6 - 8 months). To learn the final 20% takes years.

The one negative I will mention is that most DBA's have to work off hours and weekends to do maintenance and upgrades. All in all I think you will not be sorry if you move into the DBA role. Good Luck!

  8. It shouldn't matter. Somewhere around 10% of the population is homosexual. At that rate there are over 100 gay players in the league. I could deal with a gay team mate much easier than one that beat his girlfriend or killed someone as a drunk driver.

I hear this percentage used all of the time, along with the 3% are Trans-gender. I recognize that there are probably many who hide/ aren't recognized as Gay or Trans-gender, but I think those numbers are way to high. My life experiences tell me that the number is probably much closer to 3 - 5% for Gay/Lesbian and probably less than 1% for Trans-gender. Doesn't matter to me either way, but I think these number are inflated for many reasons.

As another post mentioned Football may not be a "random" sample of society, but even if you cut the number in half to 5% that still puts the number of Gay players at well over 50 for the NFL My guess is that is not the case.

  9. The Big "C" (Carl Foster for non-Thoroughbreds) is old school. I was congratulating him on his choice of Dan Wagner as Head Footbal Coach, when he told me he has never held interviews for the Coaching positions of Football, Baseball or Basketball. Bob Schneider was there his entire tenure as Principal the 1st time. When John Gross left, he offered the job to Gary Schulte, when Schulte left it went to Krebs, when Krebs left it went to Ron Dawn. He retired as Principal during Dawn to Detzal transition. He returns to Principal and has to pick both Football and Basketball immediately. He told me, " I knew who deserved the job, I simply ask do you want it". My guess is the same thing occurred again with Ron Dawn.

  10. Bert;4636595]I often hear viability being used as the line where abortion is justified or not. Has viability been used for a long period of time or is this something recent? How did it come about. I am not sure I understand the reasoning. Being Pro Life I completely understand I am biased but I generally thing I am pretty decent and seeing both sides of an arguement and am pretty fair in debating the sides but I never did get how viability was used as the measure of the acceptability of abortion.[/b]

Viability has been used as an argument for many years. I believe that life begins at conception, so to me that is the point of viability. Much of my belief is influenced by my Catholic faith more so than my scientific knowledge. So I can see how those who are not believers can question when "human Life" begins. In the mid-70's people who are pro-life proposed legislation which basically said that no abortion could be performed once a fetus is a viable human life. To define that they proposed using the earliest a pre-mature baby had been successfully able to survive at least 1 year. At the time it was somewhere around 6 months into the pregnancy. This in affect would have outlawed ALL 3rd tri-mester abortions.

They sponsors and backers were villified from both sides of the debate. As a result in never gained serious traction.

In the late 80's early 90's it returned this time with advanced invitro studies proposed the viability be measured by when advanced brain activity is measured in the baby in the womb. This would have outlawed all abortions beyond the 3 1/2 to 4 months. Again the backers were attacked from both sides of the argument, no traction for the bill.

Over the past 20 years it has been brought up again and again each time using the most current science available to measure "viable human life". Each time it has been shot down by folks on both sides of the argument. Using the latest technology this would outlaw all abortions beyond 10 weeks in the pregnancy.

The "viability" argument has been used to appeal to those who want to base decision on accepted science vs faith. Unfortunately many on the faith side belief this to be an unacceptable compromise and have done as much to kill the efforts as those on the Pro-abortion side. Instead today we still have partial birth abortions and seem no closer to moving toward the desired goal of no abortions.

  11. No one willling to go on the record, but I heard it involved either a female student (non athlete) or a young female NKU employee, and a relationship that was considered over by one side and not the other.

  12. I'm sorry I think the line of I am personally against abortion but don't want to tell others what to do, is a ridiculous agrument and one embraced by politicians trying to play both sides and not take a real stand.

If you truly believe the church teachings, that would be paramount to saying you were against child abuse, but don't want to push your beliefs on others so you would allow it if they felt it was right.

If you don't believe as the Church teaches that life starts at Conception, then I can understand people being Pro-choice. If you believe that "human life" starts sometime later ...perhaps the end of the first Tri-mester. I can understand people allowing for 1st trimester abortions.

What makes no sense to me are those who believe that at whatever stage the baby in the womb is a viable human life, and yet still support/allow others to choose if abortion is ok.

Again to answer the question posed : yes it is true.

Many like "calling" themselves Catholics or even Christians but then do very little to live a life that reflects it.

  13. I said it during the Holmes vs MC thread, when Bosley is hitting his outside shots he is almost unstoppable. When I saw MC vs. CovCath he took control of the game in the 1st half. I thought he was the Mr. Basketball candidate by the way he played. I am no Basketball expert, but I thought MC was by far the best team I had seen this year. I had not seen Ballard, but had heard they were very good. Glad to see the Sweet 16 live up to its expecations.

Congrats to all the teams that made it to the tourney. Winning Ky's state High School Basketball tourney is one of the more challenging accomplishments in Sports. This is not just my opinion by was also the opinion of one John Wooden. Who many years before his death stated that Indiana (who at the time was 1 class for bball) and Kentucky basketball championships were as difficult as any accomplishment in Basketball team sports.

  14. He was re-instated a while ago. Zeke being a D1 player has never been an issue. Whether he could be a high level QB was debated, but never him being a D1 athlete.

Zeke has great hands and will be a very nice target at TE. The question I have is if he can hit the weigh room enough to be able to Block DE's or blitzing Outside backers. If his psyche can accept it, being out of the QB spotlight might be just what he needs.

It is my understandig he has been told no more chances. He has two strikes on him, and no room to even foul off pitches. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can start to climb out. Let's hope Zeke is climbing out.

  15. You're crazy if you think they beat Holmes by 15+.,

Lunch is on me after the game if that happens. There isn't a team in the state that would beat Holmes by 15+ right now.

I agree it is unlikley, however if Bolden gets in foul trouble and either misses huge portions of the game or fouls out early in the fourth.. it could happen. MC is a very athletic team with multiple scoring options. When CovCath played MC I was really impressed by the shooting of Mr. Bosley. If he shoots it like he did that game I could definitely see them winning by double digits.

Rooting for Holmes, and if they shoot well they definitely could win this one. If I were the odds makers I would put MC as 5 1/2 point favorite.

  16. Somewhere along the way Olberman forgot what his job was... to report and comment about sports. Like many before and probably many after he made the mistake of assuming that the ratings were more about him than the subject of his reports. He went from making funny off of the cuff remarks on stories to prepared judgemental diatribes. Put another way he got to big for his britches. If his ego could take a back seat and go back to "sports" reporting his return wouldn't bother me.

If however he comes back to the holier than thou idiot that he was in his last job, no thank you.

  17. That's not correct, Bluedad.

He got the T because the whistle had already blown and he still clobbered Chames. Deserved.

Even had he been the first to foul it was going to be an intentional foul even though he was trying for the ball. High school rules require an intentional foul to be called when the foul is "excessive" in severity. Textbook case.

For the record, I didn't have a problem with Tobs foul. It wasn't dirty. It did deserve a T though.

That particular Ref had a bit of a delayed whistle, Tobler had already committed when the actual whistle was blown. It was "technically" the correct call by how the rule is written, but it sure puts a player in a very tough situation. From the time of the whistle to when Tobler made contact (as shown in the great pictures from Panda) had to be hundreths of seconds, not tenths but hundreths.

Didn't think the officiating affected the outcome of the game, but I also wouldn 't call it a well officated game. Very inconsistent in how they called things like the hand checks, sometimes very tight other times jerseys pulled out of the waistband and no call.

  18. I think there was definitely some clues dropped for that. In particular the line he said to Ellen Mae about, "if you pretend to be someone for a long time". But that could be a red herring to throw everyone off.

I may be in the minority but I'm enjoying the mystery aspect of this season.

I have enjoyed it as well. I also thought that the Ellen Mae comment was a bit of precursor. One of two things are happening Shelby is Drew, or they are purposefully leading us down the wrong path only to have a "gotcha" moment when they do reveal Drew.

  19. What part of their right didn't you understand? I'm not saying I agree with it, but it their individual right.

I wasn't talking about an unborn child, I was talking about their children that are born. If a parent abandons/fails to support a 10 year old or a 1 day old, it is a crime and they are subject to the punishment that the laws dictate. Do they have a right to do so? The law says no.

The old saying that my right to swing my fist ends at the tip of your nose. You have individual rights, but those cannot infringe upon another persons right. Many believe, myself included, that an unborn child has the right to life. Any individual right the mother has over her body, is superceded by the fact she is infringing upon the unborn childs life.
