  1. Houliston is a very nice HS QB. He is an accurate passer, generally makes good decisions and is athletic enough to scramble out of trouble and keep plays alive. However, he is about 2 inches 2 short, 30 lbs to light and his overall arm strength would need significant improvement to be a D1 QB.

Not unlike a HS pitcher who dominates with an 85 mile an hour fastball and good location. Then goes to the next level and has troulble getting people out.

Barker, in my opinion has it all except the accuracy and touch.

Not unlike a hS pitcher who dominate with a 92 mile an hour fastball, but not great location, so sometimes he walks too many batters.

For both the QB's and the pitchers, the Colleges and above look for what can that player do in 2 -3 years. 9 times out of 10 they pick the more physically gifted player, even if there are flaws in the game. To use a Pete Gillen/Skip Prosser quote (can't remember which). " I can teach defense, I can teach ball handling and can even teach shooting... I can't teach height"

  2. Thought this game would be close.

Only game left on the schedule that MAY be close will be the Ryle game. Now that CVH is back, I don't see anyone challenging the Colonels. It is a very special group. I actually wish they could play HHS again. It's pretty impressive group when your worst game maybe a one score victory over Highlands.

It will be interesting to see how this group develops. I had similar hopes for the current Senior class but for a variety of reasons they haven't reached the level I anticipated.

  3. I don't think CovCath is ducking HHS in any way. I think the short week was the determining factor in the decision. Having said that the fact the JV players haven't played in almost a month is a very bad situation for the program. Those players deserve/need game time as a reward for all of the hard work they have put in. If a good (not great ) JV player is on the fence about coming back, this can be the nudge that keeps him from returning. CovCath has had an issue the Junior class losing players for a variety of reasons. This can't help that situation for next year.

  4. I was told by a couple of the Ft. Thomas faithful over a month ago that the Freshman Birds would be lucky to be .500. I thought they were sandbagging, and basically told them I thought so.

Looks like I was wrong and owe a couple of folks an apology and a an adult beverage for me questioning their truthfulness.

It's been a while since a team from Park Hills is a prohibitive favorite in Football game against Highlands. I think it is safe to say that will be the case next week when the two freshman squads meet.

  5. Should be a good Freshman game tonight over at Cov Cath between CCH and Simon Kenton. I believe both come in unbeaten this far.

Colonels by a double digits in this one. Not doubting the talent on the SK side, just that traditionally it takes the SK Freshman until about mid-season to hit their stride. If you play them later in the year once they have figured out their offensivie identity, they are usually tougher to beat.

Add to the fact that the Colonels are loaded this year, and I think the result will be a 20 - 6 Colonel victory.

  6. Tony is doing a pretty good job in Cole's absence. This will only pay dividends to Tony and to the team long term.

I think the Hentz is a very good Frosh QB. He is not the athlete that CVH is, but pretty good as compared to most Frosh QB's.

Is it for sure the CVH will return this year, or will he heal up and wait for BBall season?

As a football fan I sure hope he returns. However, if he is as good a bball player as I believe he is, then its a tough call.

  7. Did Highlands struggle throwing the ball last night? That has traditionally been a week spot for the Pioneers defense. They are usually decent against the run but have struggled defending the pass, especially the short and intermediate game.

Who played QB for the birds?

  8. Tough match up for the Colonels. While their Defense is very good this year, the physical mis-match this game will create for the d-line/LB's has me concerned. Moeller's oline will probably outweigh the d-line/inside backers by 60 - 80 lbs per man. If moe decides to stuff it down CovCath's throat, I am afraid there may not be much a Sam Burchel(less) defense can do to stop it.

I am sure Moeller will also work on their passing game as well. CovCath's secondary is very good with Way, Fisher, Oberhausen (if he plays) and Red Wag's. However, if Moeller's qb as all day to throw, it makes it very tough even on the best secondary to cover the type of athletes that Moeller will be sending out in routes.

  9. An official sent me the following:

    The rule book reads:

An illegal forward pass is a foul. Illegal forward passes include:

    D. A pass intentionally thrown into an area not occupied by an eligible offensive receiver.

    E. A pass intentionally thrown incomplete to save loss of yardage or to conserve time.

Now, determining intentional grounding isn't east. First, you must use common sense to determine whether or not the QB is purposely trying to get rid of the ball to avoid a loss, sack, or simply put - that no one is open, ditch it. Typically, you see this call when QB's scramble toward the sideline and are just trying to get rid of it for any of the above reasons, or to refrain from being hit. In regards to eligible receivers, wing officials should provide the help to the referee if no one was in the area at the time of the incompletion. However, you can sell whether or not you've just had grounding if the QB has defenders who are on his body at the time of the throw, if he's hit simultaneous to the pass, or it's obvious someone has run and incorrect route.

The penalty for IG is five yards from the spot of the actual foul - where he's thrown the ball. This penalty also carries a loss of down. Lastly, if the QB is called for this foul in the endzone, the penalty is a safety.

Is there no exception listed to the rule? If not it would seem every clock play "intentionally thrown to conserve time" should be called intentional grounding.

  10. He is for sure in the dime package, as well as on Special teams. There are four Safeties all of which will see some PT. He has had a good camp this year and is expected to be a major contibutor.

On a side note Luke Massa from Cincy St. X has also had a great camp. He went from buried on the depth chart, to actually rotating on certain packages at WR. His blocking Skills have put him back in the mix for PT.

  11. I understand that losing your QB, in a new offense really puts you behind the 8 ball. I was only half kidding about going back to the old offense, but unless this was just a terrible aberration they don't have the QB to run the offense the tried tonight. They also didn't do the QB any favors by continuing to roll him to the right and forcing him to throw across his body. Hopefully they can re-group, but if not it's hard to find a win on the schedule.

  12. CovCath very good showing. Wagner was impressive, as was Dressman, Hatter and Braunetc. Defense for CovCath banged up with injuries, still played a very solid game with some inexperienced replacements. Bodes well for the Colonels once some key players return.

Having said that, this was the worst Boone team I have ever seen. Kids gave great effort and never quit, however they were a hot mess on offense. Quite honestly they may be better off going back to the Owen Hauck offense. Their passing game was nearly non-existent. QB is a very good athlete but doesn't have the arm to run that offense. Unless some major changes occur it will be a very long year for Boone.

  13. I Think Dez Wells was railroaded, no doubt about it. I really wish he were still there. I'm a huge X fan and Dez Well fan.

The problem with his law suit is this. He openly admitted to having consensual sex and drinking alcohol under age in the dorm. Both are violations of the Code of Conduct that he signed. Both violations (especially added together) are valid reasons for punishment including dismissal from the University. Since he agreed to that by signing the code of Conduct he is in a tenious position. This type of punishment has precedent both at Xavier as well as other Universities (BYU for example).

Where Xavier has a problem is that the accuser of the Sexual assault also admitted to violations of the Code of Conduct and she was not dismissed. However, she claims that the Sexual liasion was not consensual, so perhaps that is the difference. I am very curious to see if the accusor is also named in the lawsuit.

  14. That was posted somewhere but if I remember correctly, that was an unsubstantiated rumor that was really only meant to ruffle some feathers. That's what I heard at the kool aid stand.

I heard that several of the programs in Central and NKY where former G-town players are/were coaches were contacted about a potential game. Don't know anymore than that, but that is what was told by a coach with ties to g-town.

  15. Highlands travels to the Pit to play the 2nd level of the GCL this year right? We will get a taste of things OH/KY then and find some truth of these polls.

I'm hearing that the Elder faithful are not very confident in this years team. The overall talent and numbers are down. They are talking about this game as a must win just to have a chance at a .500 record. They are very concerned about this game. To use their words..' Losing to Trinity is one thing, losing to anyone else in the state of KY is unacceptable'

  16. Does HHS play in that league, does Campbell County play in that league, heck none of the Boone County teams except Ryle play in it so what happened last years doesn't mean much, until that is you show it on the field this year.

Now understand, I have seen them practice, have spoken to some of their coaches, I understand that the bar is being set high by some fans but......lets just wait until the next six or seven weeks pass, before we go off the deep end!

I agree. I think this is the most talented team I have seen in many years. However, many things can happen during a season, injuries, illness etc. Many times at the freshman level one or two dominant players can control a game. I have seen my share of Freshman games where one gifted player returns a couple punts or breaks off a couple long runs and an other wise very close game gets flipped the other way.

I think this team will do very well, but it takes many things going right for an undefeated season.

  17. Probably 205-210. Very stocky. Can squat 500+. Not sure bench, but its plenty. Kid has built up what were already thick legs.

I remember the big deal at UK many years ago was having all the offensive linemen be able to squat 500+. I'm guessing the bar has been raised- wonder what that is nowadays?

Luke is a great kid and a very hard worker. With all due respect to Sam Burchell, who I believe is the best LB in NKY, Luke is maybe the most important player on the Colonels this year. He is a fantastic runner, who can also catch the ball out of the back field as well. With the young, all beit very exciting, qb at the helm this year Luke will be relied on as the bell cow of the offense. With the O-line they have this year, I would expect Luke to have outstanding year this year. My concern is that, God forbid, if Luke gets injured they will be very young and inexperienced at the RB position.

  18. I would agree, however some (parents & players) don't mind especially if they (the player) want to get better. I say if you and your athlete are willing to go down this path more power to ya. You can look at has having "mini" vacations every weekend play summer ball and going out of town.

I am a huge sports guy, football in particular but I agree that there is just too much required of HS athletes today. I personally think that the amount of time has hurt the numbers in Football. I realize that the intent was to "improve" the game and give more Ky Football players an opportunity to play in College. I am not sure it has been successful. The top 10% of programs may have improved their level of play, but overall I think the quality of HS football has diminished the past 15 years.

I think we should double the length of the dead period. Make it start June 15th and end July 15th. It would give families, coaches included a well deserved/needed break.

  19. Now on to the predicted record. As others have said Higlands and Moeller will be favorites over CovCath. The remaining games CovCath will either be the favorite or it will be a toss up. Barring more critical injuries, the offense will be very good. If the D-line plays to it's potential, I think the defense will be outstanding as well.

Let's remember that these seniors as Frosh were very good. Only losses were to Highlands. In fact only other close game was to Campbell Co. I know Freshman records don't mean much 3 years later, but the core of this team is very talented. I will go as far as to say that if they don't go 7-3 in the regular season it will be a big disappointment. But as AAATC says, thats why we play the games!
