Easter Carter will travel to Greenup County for a battle between two 2-1 teams. East Carter coming off of, what many may believe to be, an upset, of Boyd County and Greenup County coming off of back-to-back one score wins over inter-county rival Russell and Portsmouth (OH). Both teams suffered their one loss in the opening game: Greenup to Coal Grove (OH) and East Carter to Estill County. Which team will extend their winning streak to three this week?

If you are a Class 1A fan, there is no build up necessary for this matchup of the top two teams in the class. They last met in the State Championship game last season where Pikeville won in convincing fashion. This season, Pikeville is once again the favorite and these two teams will likely meet twice: this early matchup and a collision course for a late playoff meeting. Historically, the home team holds an advantage between these two teams and commonly, who ever wins the first matchup of the season ends up losing in a second matchup. Who wins round 1 of 2023?

To be honest, I don’t see a reason for a mouthpiece. It was useless when I played and it remains so today. I think the thought was that people would knock their teeth out or something. But I never wore one in practice and only wore one in games because it was required. Practice was a lot more dangerous in those days than games. I can report that I still have all my teeth and never had a concussion.
