  1. Their sophmore class has improved a lot this summer and look to help on the varisty level. But, I don't know if they will get a lot of varsity time as you have suggested. Sharp, Quigley, and Miller will play anywhere from 28-30 minutes each in every game. That will only leave two spots for varsity time minutes from the bench.

Look for the six seniors to get most of the minutes with Nikola, Atkins and Hiller getting the spot minutes. Felts and Smith are the role players who know the system the best. Felts is there to provide some defense and toughness and Smith is there to knock down shots. Norman should get the post minutes if he can just stay under control and rebound

Don't underestimate this is these guys third year in the program under Coach Carr. They know how hard you have to play and they are going to make fewer mental mistakes than the young guys at this point

  2. Ryne Smith shot the ball pretty well last night.

Rebounding looked better, but it will be a work in progress for the entire season.

I don't know their names, just numbers, but the sophmore class is big and looks like it will become a huge class in height. This group has really improved from last year's frosh team.

Still think rebounding is going to be a struggle throughout the year. Other than Sharp who is a good rebounder from the guard spot they are just not big and strong enough to keep other teams off of the boards.

  3. A combination of both. Scott played very good defense and ran the offense almost to perfection. North Laurel will probably struggle a little this year.

Overall I think the team played well. Sharp, Quigley, and Miller will always be their big three night in & night out, but I have been impressed by the younger players coming off the bench.

Preview in Enquirer today mentions "big three"....how did other seniors perform last night and which of the younger players look like they are ready to step up?

  4. It just seems to me that is a low number of Juniors this year and just can't figure out what happened to the Freshman class of 2 years ago. I know some kids weed out certain sports after their Freshman year to concentrate on sports they like more, but I can't believe this would be the case for most of them. I know all the kids from that Freshman team really like Coach Carr, so could there be another reason why there is such a low turn-out from that Freshman team of 2 years ago that don't play basketball anymore ? This is just an observation I wish the Eagles good luck on their up-coming season I know they have the talent and Head Varsity Coaching experience to go far. I am an EAGLE for life and always will support the big 3 sports for the school.:D :ylsuper:

Some kids weed themselves out and coaches take care of the rest.

Exactly what would the big 3 sports be at Scott HS? Or is it you just don't support the "minor" sports?

  5. Can someone please tell me how come there are only 3 Juniors playing basketball this year on Scott's roster? I believe the Juniors playing are Adkins, Bianchi, and Lowry correct me if I am wrong. I know for a fact there are more Juniors at Scott who could have contributed to this team. When these Juniors were Freshman didn't they have a team ? I assume if they did they had at least 10 to 12 players so where are they at now. I know they didn't get cut they must have decided not to play for whatever reason.

Who would you expect to still be playing? Did they play last year as sophs?

  6. Maybe not top 5, but Troy Mckinley from SK was the best shooter from my era in NKY. I'll never forget him pullin up at half court and burying a jump shot to beat the buzzer. Not a heave or a throw from half court, a straight up jump shot.

Draud was the best I have seen from the N Ky area and I am surprised that McKinly isn't getting more love from his N Ky brethren. He could flat fill it up from the outside and he also did it on the biggest stage leading Simon Kenton to state championship.

  7. Anyone know what Simon Kenton has this year?

Should be interesting to see the freshmen and varsity scrimmages. I don't take much stock in JV scrimmages (or even games) for the most part because so many schools "do JV" so differently. This is true in football as well as basketball.

Finally, let's put the "elbowing incident" behind us. I'm almost sorry to have brought it up - someone wanted a report from the scrimmage and I was the first to respond in detail; and along with Jackson's play and Mason County's dominance; it was one of the more significant aspects of the game. Some folks saw it through rose-colored glasses; some through blue. The young man from Rose Hill responded to contact inappropriately on the court, was disciplined, and he will no doubt learn from the experience. From what little I saw, he has the makings of a fine ball player, and I have no doubt that he will be a force in the 16th sooner rather than later.

Simon Kenton has an outstanding PG in Michael Hester and a senior class that has started together on the varsity level since freshmen year. They have been thru the wars together and should provide Mason a pretty good test.

  8. Sorry for coming in late on this thread, but aren't there a few other seniors your not even mentioning. (not sure if the names are right but...)

Zimmer, Norman, and Walter. I think Zimmer plays football. Not sure about the other two, but I know there was another player on JV and Varsity that was kinda big. Scott hopefully will surprise everyone.

My best guess would be that Norman would be the first big guy off of the bench and depending upon match ups could get some starts. If he could be a physical presence he could help this team on the boards.

Not sure about the other two names......

  9. I don't exactly know how Scott's perimeter players will do this year, but Sharp & Quigley held their own and actually outscored Hill, Jacobs, and Simpson in their only match-up in AAU this summer. Plus, IMO... Sharp & Quigley are as good as Lenhof is.

Scott's guards do go up against all the perimeter players you mentioned above during the regular season except for Lenhof, so I guess we will find out then how they compare to these other players.

I think Sharp is way underrated offensively, gets to the rim and can shoot. I don't know if I would put him in the top tier of players locally (9th & 10th region) but he is in the next group.

  10. That's a bit much.

    :thumb:

Gotta agree on this one...Smith was as good a shooter as I saw on the JV level last year but let's see if he can transfer that to the varsity level before we start comparing him to kids who have already proven it on the varsity level. Shots are a little harder to come by and the close outs get there a little quicker.

For Scott's sake I hope he fills it up from the outside because if he can't those driving lanes for Sharp and Quigley get a little tighter. If Miller and Smith can score from the outside consistently Sharp and Quigley can get to the rim and that could make Scott a tough out come tourney time.

  11. I don't think Scott or Campbell for that matter in the top 5 is all that much of a stretch?? Personnally, past the top 2-3, the tenth is wide open based on who replaces their departed seniors better. Never an exact science when kids move from JV to Varsity, but obviously the teams who make this transition the best will rise in the rankings. Campbell has a good incoming junior class along with some quality senior big guys, and Scott returns some fine guards, but will be challenged to find an inside game. I still see both ahead of Pendleton based on what I saw in the JV ranks last year, and challenging Mongomery, Harrison, etc. for the top five. The small school contenders such as Silver Grove, Augusta and St. Pats have some quality starters, and in the case of SG's Pelle, a top regional talent; but in the end lack the depth to compete night-in, night-out IMO!! Time will tell!!

My concern with Scott is rebounding and depth. I think they will have a tough time defending inside. They are really going to have to shoot the ball well to stay in games. Carr's teams will play hard and they should be fun to watch if you like watching basketball with a "let it fly" offensive philosophy.

  12. I agree that Mason Will be the team to beat but by no means will they dominate the region... GRC will be tough, but for all the Brossart non believers i am one right here, they are a very big strong physical team, and alot of the teams arent very big but Brossart returns a 6"5 PF and a 6'6 center and thier advantage will be their strenth inside i look for them to lose very little and win alot of games...I dont believe PC will be very good, Belcher is the only player that is returning with alot of varsity experiance.....I like Harrison and Scott two teams that are returning 2 starters and like to shoot the three ball.......I look for Harrison and Scott to be in the top 5 bye the end of year this season....

I have picked Scott to be in the 6-7 range in a couple of threads on here but top 5?? Sharp is a quality guard and Quigley has been very good at times. Miller has had some good moments as a key reserve. Who rebounds, who defends and who else scores? Pretty big jump to go into the top five based on those three players.

  13. The time frame will only be confirmed when Mike see's an orthopedic doctor.

The 6-8 week statement came from the horses mouth.

I do hope you are right!

Hopefully Mike gets everything checked out quickly and the news is good from the ortho....

However, if he is out 6-8 weeks who runs the point for the Pioneers?

Mike makes that team go....they get a lot of open looks because of opponents respect for Hester.

  14. Is it true that this same school system mandates that Dixie, Scott, and Simon Kenton all play each other home and away in basketball each year?

If that is true, then why would a SK/Scott football game not fall under the same edict? Both should have plenty of room on the schedule now that there are less district games.

Thought the same thing....mandated thru Super that basketball needs home and home every year to keep "rivalry's" alive even after redistricting took everyone out of the same region.

  15. Have you seen them play?

Have not seen them play that I am aware of but I have seen the Mason County and Campbell Co 8th grade groups on the AAU circuit so I am pretty confident in my statement that they are not the best 8th graders in the 10th region. AAU is not an end all but if you are telling me that there are two 8th grade post players who are varsity ready for any team in the 10th region and they have never suited up in an AAU tourney?

Quality post players at the 13 & 14 year old age group are like gold to AAU coaches. If you are good you are found. Look at Rose Hill last year...suited up some of the best 8th graders in the state, nationally ranked 8th graders and they struggled to win at the varsity level.

Look I'm happy the kids are getting an opportunity to play varsity basketball at a young age and hopefully they can continue to develop just don't make the statement that two 8th graders that might start for Deming or come off of the bench could play for any other varsity team in the 10th region.

If they were at Mason Co, GRC or even CampCo & Scott (considered middle of the road 10th region teams) they wouldn't be playing varsity, JV and maybe not even frosh. To move up at schools that size you have to be a pretty special player.
