  1. I have found one consistency in the six years of Mayo debate on BGP. Those who don't know him and who have never come into contact with him are the ones who find fault with him. I cannot remember seeing a negative post about him from anyone who actually knows him.

I would submit that that is a significant fact.

I have met OJ and coached against his teams and you will find my earlier posts always have taken up for him. While in Kentucky I never found him to be anything but a class act and no doubt the most talented player we will see in high school around here. However, his latest actions should cause concern about certain character traits he seems to be developing. He will no doubt be a star. I just hope he is a star we read about only in the context of his basketball talents.

  2. I watched every game in the tournament and he wont ride the pine lol. And it was for hanging on the rim they called it, the ref was onto him all game, they didnt like him. But this team did put on a show, and the way they played int he tourney no KY team could have beat them. Patterson was the leading scorer the first game. WV tournament is awesome, I have been to Kentucky and WV and WV is so fun, you would be suprised, I seen alot of Kentucky folks at the games.

Get real!! He dunked during the game, got the ball and threw it into the crowd!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That gets you technicals. That is not a ref picking on a player. If his HS career wasn't over it would earn him yet another suspension. The kid has great talent. I wish he would get over some of the antics he pulls and showcase the talent.

  3. My take is this -

WC is the most athletic and most experienced of the bunch.

The athleticism gap is not big enough to become a huge factor, but the experience is.

JBS has some size and very, very nice guards but to be honest they are very lacking in the team concept(when I watched) and much more lacking in the coaching department.

Shelby Valley is loaded with young athletes and high basketball IQ players that have played more games together than probably anyone in the state, IMVHO they are a big guy away from being the best of the 4 teams we are talking about.

Elliot Co. - has some good athletes for the mountains, but they got beat by a South Charleston team that looked flat out more athletic but not as good basketball IQ when I saw them and that was kinda of early and only one game.

Wasn't South Charleston the state runner-up to HHS and OJ last week in WVa?

  4. Not me, never lost a game to them in high school and I see Rocky and talk to him all of the time. I think they are a good team, hope they lose in the first round of state though. Tired of people over hyping them. They had the easiest run to the state tournament of any team in the region. First Boyd County, a team they had already beat. Then a weak and injured Russell team and last a team from Blazer they had already beat. So these people on here going on about what a tough run they had was not right, the facts show that. Don't know a thing about Shelby Valley but I will be rooting for them very hard.

I was going to not post on this thread again, but the above statement indicates your knowledge of the 16th Region. It was the opinion of vitually everyone that the Boyd-Elliott game was the toughest first rounder and that it was the toughest draw of the tournament. That statement alone lets me know it is a waste of time to further discuss the matter with you. Your dislike of Elliott County clouds your judgment to the point you make such a ridiculous comment.

  5. Good question. Anyone from elliot Co out there? Just out of curiosity, are those sophs all pretty much the right age or are they a little older? Whatever the case, they can play

They are all the "right" age. The holdbacks would have all graduated at 17 had they not been held back. I really do not understand the purpose of the discussion. Who better than the parents know what is right for their kids. I held one back and it worked out great. Another graduated at 17 and that was best for him due to his maturity level. I know all of those parents and much more went into the process than athletics. The rules have been followed. What was done was in the best interests of each individual child and that should be the end of discussion.:flame:

  6. The only reason for being held back IMO, is grades and if you don't have the grades, then you should not be playing basketball anyways. I agree this happens all to often.

You are entitled to that opinion, but age, maturity, social development and even size should be considered py parents. Many kids graduate at 17 and another year of maturity and development would have been quite useful, and I am not talking about athletics. Your opinion doesn't really consider all relevant issues.

  7. Shelby Valley-Elliott County will be entertaining. Two young teams that really get after it. I am looking forward to watching them play. They have played many of the same players against each other in AAU ball dating back to the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The games were always close and pretty up tempo.

  8. This is exactly what makes many 16th Region threads a point of humor to many other BGPers. For some reason we end up bickering with each other over the dumbest things and get more threads closed than any other region in the state.

For the record, it was not a RH poster that got your other thread closed. Believe it or not, not everyone at RH is a rotten egg. Most of us are genuinely happy for Elliott County. You have some great kids living out the storybook dream and legend of Kentucky High School Basketball. I personally have no doubt that the fans at Rupp will fall in love with your team and style of play. You guys will remind them of what it’s all about.

Make no mistake, we want like crazy to get to Rupp again ourselves, BUT we also know what it will take to get there. We are not out to take something we didn’t earn, or to taint your accomplishment. You guys earned the privilege this season. Straight up, no excuses. Enjoy the heck out of it. Have fun. Make the 16th Region proud. Make memories that will be talked about 50 years from now. :thumb:

I certainlywasn't slamming Rose Hill or any poster. I think Rose Hill fans and Elliott County fans generally support each other. I know from the last few years of AAU ball I have truly enjoyed the kids and parents from Rose Hill and have become a fan of the boys and girls teams. They play the game the right way. My original post was just that it would be nice to leave the whole Ashland-Rose Hill conflict out of a thread every now and then. And on that argument I must say I usually come down on the side of the Hill, too. We appreciate the support of the 16th Region fans and I really hope those kids go to Lexington and continue to have fun playing the game the way they do.

  9. Our system is special. It should never be changed. Having a small school like Elliott County make it to Rupp is what small town dreams are made of. Don't dilute that. If you went to classes in the 16th A and AA would be packed with teams. AAA and AAAA, if there are any, would be an automatic trip for some schools every year.

  10. Do you realize that you have made the only negative post on this thread. It didn't sound like two Rose Hill posters, but one Ashland and one Rose Hill poster. Remember you brought Rose Hill into this thread.

I realize who it was. I apologize for making a negative post. I was enjoying the other thread until it got shut down by things that had nothing to do with the game or thread. Those Elliott County players know they are near and dear to me and their accomplishments make the whole county proud. The kids and parents have worked harder than can be imagined and sacrificed greatly in time and money to develop their talent, but their attitude and heart is what won this championship. I think their style will win over many fans at Rupp.

  11. Truly a great article. On a side note,it is a shame that two Rose Hill posters started bickering with each other and got the Ashalnd-Elliott County thread closed. It would have been nice for once to discuss a 16th region game without a Rose Hill conflict shutting it down.:fight:

  12. I remember last year or a couple years ago people were complaining that holding the 16th region at MSU was home court advantage for Rowan County, They wanted to have the games moved to Boyd County Middle School or somehwere up there. When Rowan Co. lost this year it was the 5th time in 6 years they've lost in the 1st round. I would think moving it to the BCMS would def be home court advantage for Ashland. But on the other hand, Rowan Co. fans don't support thier teams much, there was alot more East fans in the areana this year and I would imagine tonight that there will be a big sea of Marroon on both sides.

No homecourt advantage for Rowan. They don't play or practice at MSU and their fans do not buy up all the tickets. In the championship game it looked like an Elliott County home game. I would bet over 2,000 of the 3100+ that were in attendance were from Elliott which is pretty amazing considering the size of the schools involved.

  13. The fans of the Lions should be very happy and proud of their teams success this year, but I have noticed some on here not having a lot of class toward the runner up Ashland. Not a great example for the kids to see, IMO. And those thumping their chest loudly about next year and the year after. A lot can happen between now and then and Rose Hill is a nice little team too, they may have a lot to say about the region titles the next few years too.

Again I don't think it necessarily the fans from Elliott that are popping off about the next few years. Over the years Ashland has developed quite a few detractors around the region. With the classy manner in which Biggs conducts himself this may change somewhat. We will enjoy this one for all its worth and then get ready because there is never an easy path for a small school. However, it will be fun to watch 2 small schools be highly regarded next season. There is a multitude of young talent at Rose Hill and Elliott County.

  14. Wait just one minute......I have and will not make any excuses.

I replied to a poster who was slamming Ashland's coach.

I'm sure that the people of Sandy Hook and Elliott County are proud as peacocks right now, and they have every right to be, just leave the yelling out of it when posting. I really thought that Elliott fans would be more gracious winners than this, but sometimes emotions get the best of us all;)

I don't think its the Elliott Fans Onetoya. Let me say that the first half was one of the best shows we have seen at the Regional for several years. No walk it up and grind it out, just pure pressure, run, gun and hustle. Coach Bigg's comments after the game show him to be a truly class act and a welcome addition to the 16th and I love the fact he stuck to his style.

Elliott finally shot the ball like they are capable of and the results showed. Those kids were going to find a way to win that game. The rebounding of the Faulkners is amazing for kids their size. It just shows how much they want it. Maynard pops off the bench and simply went off on Ashland. When he gets time to set his feet, he is deadly. I congratulate both coaches for not overcoaching. Some seem to think it shows great coaching to control every trip down the floor. Mays and Biggs have the confidence in the players just to let them play and it paid off for both of them all year. And a big hats off to Elliott's fans. They had by far the biggest crowd every night despite being the smallest school. One last comment, Timmy Knipp may be one of the best to come out of this region ina long time before he graduates. There will be some classic Elliott-Rose Hill games in the near future.
