  1. My impressions of the ballgame echo much of what has already been stated. One of the more significant points from my perspective was what appeared to be a lack of intensity at the beginning and through much of the ballgame. I realize there are ebbs and flows throughout a season and its probably not possible to systematically maintain peak emotional levels for every single game...but…as one poster already mentioned, we had an opportunity to put this team away early and didn’t.

Our passing game seemed way out of synch all evening…for whatever reason(s) some nights just aren’t your night. The running game however kept on rolling. I particularly liked the power game displayed by Davis and Cordle, not to mention the amazing and continued improvement of Matt Thomas. Thomas is quickly pulling away from the pack as our regions premiere running back.

Defensively we stood our ground much of the night but had a couple of noticeable lapses in our secondary coverage. McDavid’s pick and return for six was nothing short of sweet though.

As for this being the final game with the Blackcats, it appears this series should be put on hold for awhile. There are other teams out there which may better prepare us for the AAA(A) playoffs.

So…what game will we attend next Friday?,,,I really dislike these bye weeks.

IN OUR REGION? I don't think some people in the BLACK and GOLD would agree with you. He may be good, he may be the best, but I don't know if he is even the best inthe district, let alone the region. Shawn Grimm from JC averaged over 20 yds per carry against LC. It's hard to pull away from that.
  2. I think Johnson Central will have their way with South Point. However, the thing that intrigues me the most is how JK Ratliff will play. With all of the attention the South Point QB is getting, I wonder if there will be any college scouts in attendance. If that is the case, it could be a great opportunity for JK to begin to make a name for himself in the eyes of some colleges.

Now, before some of you begin to jump my case for saying that Ratliff is a top college prospect...that is not what I am saying. However, he does have a college frame (6'4 or 6'5") and a really strong arm. This could be a plus or it could be a negative depending on how he responds to the pressures of having scouts in the stands if there are any there.

Does anyone from JC have any knowledge of colleges which have indicated they will be in attendance?

If anybody thinks your crazy, I'm more crazy, because I believe J.K. has the perfect body to be big time. I haven't seen him behind center enough to know what his limits are but he has the athletic 6'4 frame that most kids dream of having. The other kid who has that kind of body is Blake Johnson. JC is loaded with good young talent, too many to name. If you work hard anything is possible but as you can see from last year in Ron Blume you need to have a D-1 body to go along with D-1 skills .
  3. I understand that, but didn't everyone in the state know Slone would be taking that shot so Pugh took it with enough time to get another shot off, and didn't Slone take the final shot after a rebound? PHS was out of timeouts and couldn't draw up a play for the final shot and its hard to create an open look when youy have to shoot a 3 (no defender is going to honor a drive to the basket.) I know Daniel very well and you are misjudging him when you say is ego got in the way.
I do not know Daniel well but I have seen him play enough to have an opinion that he is an outstanding athlete and a very unselfish player. I think he may have had a bad game against SV (I only listened to it on the radio), but fans of paintsville should look in another direction for their teams underachievement. Only one mans opinion.
  4. Did anyone else think this game was very physical? 90% of the action was just 2 teams playing hard. However, at times the emotion of the game seemed to get the best of the players( and this went both ways.) Maybe its just me but it did seem that the refs let it go on too long.

By no means did the refs have anything to do with this Eagle defeat but I do feel like they let to much go on away from the ball. I feel like we were out coached, out played, out cheered, and Paintsville even had a better band. We are a better team than we showed if that team shows up in the district tournament it will be one and out. JC has worked to hard for that to happen.

  5. I'm sorry Buck Master I didn't realize you were talking about this one particular instance. I thought it was a generalization that it should never be done. If you played in the late 80's we probably with or against each other at one time or another. I'm not saying every time it happens it's for the right reasons or even very smart. I wasn't at the game you are talking about. Pure intimidation some times isn't the smart way to go. When you say it's not part of the game to do it on purpose. I disagree.

  6. Mike, obviously knows baseball. Watch him coach and noone will dispute that. I was also told that he had his pitcher hit Spears, Pikeville's leadoff hitter, in the region last year to start the game. What he didnt know the kid was hit something like 18 times last year. His bp coach said he took pitches off the body in bp just to condition himself for it. However the strategy didnt work and it is not part of the game to do it on purpose. I hope he changes some of his philosophy and becomes the great coach he could be. A guy who played at Louisville, obviously knows baseball.

I think his temperament has caused him some grief and I hope he gets that under control. I saw him argue with fans last year, he has to thicken his skin a little or people will use that against him.

I disagree Buck Master, I don't know if Mike told his pitcher to hit the lead off man or not, but it is as much a part of the game as brush backs, double plays, peanut and cracker jacks. I'm not saying with intent to hurt or throw at someones head but sometimes it's a matter of gaining respect and protecting your teammates. When I played and runners were on if you got hit intentionally and your pitcher didn't have the guts to protect you, the pitcher had his own team to deal with. Maybe I'm old school but that's baseball to me.

  7. Keeton is no doubt a good coach but I have a problem giving him my vote for best coach in the 15th. His vote to have a blind draw in the 57th was a swing vote for district tournament pairings. That to me shows a lack of confidense in his team. I can understand Mike Hall from SC and the coach from MC voting against seeding because the baseball tradition has not been on the same level as JC and P-ville. Ketton on the other hand has a rich tradition at LC,but would rather take his luck with the draw and hope to by-pass either of these two teams. On the other hand Lawson is a gamer. I played legion ball with him at pikeville for one year. He knew the game back then and was a very smart leader on our team. Shawn Hall, from what I have witnessed has a very agressive style of play. He will take chances when he thinks he needs to. Shawn inherited a very good team at JC and he handled it well for a first year coach at that school. JC will win their share of games but we are down. He is a baseball man, a young one but a good one. I feel he will be the best in the 15th for years to come.

  8. JC wins easily! Looks like they are the forerunner in the 57th at this point, considering how Paintsville is playing!

Not easy JC was only up four in the forth. Still a very good win for JC. This team has a lot of potential and could be a strong contender in the region, but it is still wide open. SC is a very dangerous team when they get hot and they showed alot of heart to stay in this game. They cause us alot of problems with our defensive style and i hope we don't have to see them again even though I feel we are a better team. The P-ville game is an emotional game and JC played 32 min. of hard basketball. This team must understand that they are the number one team in the district and everyone wants to be there and their opponents will play hard every night to knock them off. When JC learns to play 4 strong quarters every game they will be tuff. I believe we are getting better and coach Starns is doing a good job. I believe if they follow what coach Starns is trying to teach this team will be successful this year and years to come.

  9. Kids from surrounding counties are eligble to play. Cal Ripkin ages are 4-12. If your area does not have a Cal Ripkin league and your child starts in johnson county he or she would be able to stay in that league until their eligbility is up. After 12 you go to Babe Ruth. If (for example) Floyd county does not have a Babe Ruth league at the start of your childs 13yr old year he or she could play in Johnson County and remain until their eligbility is up. If (for example) Floyd county starts a Babe Ruth league your child MAY have to play there to be all-star eligble. This is my understaning to make sure you will have to contact Jason Hurt, Johnson County league president.

  10. First of all I would like to say that I have absolutely no dog in this fight. I live about as far from Paintsville as you can live. That being said my league Owensboro Southern has been both Bambino (now Cal Ripkin) and currently is Little League. I have coached a team to the Little League World Series. I have to say being involved with both that Little League is without a doubt a much better organization than Cal Ripkin. If you have a choice choose Little League! I have always respected the teams from Paintsville that I have had the priviledge of coaching against. You guys have always had a first class organization. I hope your league stays strong and continues to produce classy hard playing kids in your Little League.

Green Nation, I have seen the little league program at Owensboro Southern, and they are where we want to be in this county. It makes no difference weather it is little league or cal ripkin it's still youth baseball. Paintsville Little League has been the primary feeder for Johnson Central and Paintsville for the last fifty years. There is something wrong with the fact that JC has only three senior baseball players this year. Paintsville Little League is one of the better Little League programs in the state, but it is deffinately on the decline. I thank you for your kind words about the program but Johnson County school systems have made a desision to start a new program. From what I hear the the Owensboro program have outstanding facilities, funding, and I can say from my observation at the state tournament in ashland, parental support. Facilities and funding are major problems with the existing Little League program, and it's a shame because there are alot of hard workers in that program. Funding will not be an issue in the new league and good people will be involved. That, in my oppinion is what makes a start to a good program, not the name Little League or Cal Ripken. I would like to thank the people from Paintsville Little League for my experiances there. I'm also thankful for the leaders from Johnson county schools for recognizing that our baseball program is on the decline and trying to do something about it.

  11. If these new metal alloy bats are so much better where is all the power? Back in the day, in the 15th regional tournament every team had three or four guys who could go yard. I have been to the last two tournaments and have only seen one or two players who had a CHANCE of going long. In our area I have seen no true power hitters.
