  1. Coach Wood and his teams in the 14th would have won at least 1, maybe 2 regional titles. You must forget he has played in the tenth region and had to beat Clark and Montgomery just to get to the regional tourney. Also do you think Powell would have made it to the regional tourney every year just because of Coach Dean if they had to play Hazard or PCC in the first round of the district like Leslie did? I will say again,Powell has been winning district titles and regional runner ups for 3 decades so that is nothing new for that program and Coach Dean done nothing any different than Coach Combs at Powell, Coach Childers at Powell, and Coach Collins at Powell. I agree that Woods success in the 14th is yet to be determined so I will grant you that. However,Dixon,Combs, and Meehan have all won titles in that 6 years so he is in no way ahead of them and the 2 decades of success at KCC in no way puts him ahead of Hammonds. Just something for you to think about.

  2. Has nothing to do with past years. Powell Co has been winning district titles and has more regional runner ups than you can count. They were doing that when Dean was still playing HS ball in Booneville so that is nothing new in Stanton. The thread is about the best in the 14th. Top 6 Combs, Meehan, Hammonds,Dixon, Melton, Wood. Those are the facts and who would you put Dean ahead of???? And of that team that was not so talented 2 years ago. They only had 7 two or three year varsity starters and of the 7, three are playing collegiate baseball, one could've if he had wanted to and the other is Muncie who will play on the collegiate level somewhere. Doesn't sound like a lack of talent to me. hazard beat them 5-1 and Powell left the bases loaded twice and runners on second and third once. Hazard had 2 unearned runs???? I don't know but it sounds like it was a pretty good game and it definately wasn't decided before the game was over. The game ended with the bases loaded for Powell.

  3. Where does Gene Combs on Lee fit on this list?? I saw his name mentioned a lot on the 14th region list.

Coaches at Lee Co. Small scool of 300 students who has won 2 regional titles in past 6 years. If he didn't just like where he is you would probably see him at a much larger quality baseball program. I think beattyville is his hometown.

  4. Obviously powell has a quality secondbaseman that can help out at that position, but as for replacing everyone i feel like the only ones that will be tough to replace are there CF that could hit, and banjo on the mound. As for behind the plate they have a new catcher that is better defensively IMO than last years catcher. He can also hit a bit. RF will not be hard to replace, they have a boatload of outfielders which will also help replace their CF.

You have to be joking or not know what you are talking about. 3 of the 5 are playing collegiate baseball and one of the remaining is the cf you spoke of. If you think loosing a catcher and backup catcher(the CF) doesn't hurt any team you obviously are watching a lot of the wrong sport. Powell's biggest weakness this year will be behind the plate and at the plate hitting the baseball. Pitching should be OK based on 14th region standards. Kinser,Muncie,Benningfield,Brewer will all be above average to good. finding someone to keep the ball in front of the plate and throwing out baserunners will be the biggest hole for Coach Varney. I know Powell has some young catchers that may come around but saying they have an underclassman that is better than either one of the young men that left last year is absurd. If so they probably should go ahead and left him sign his letter of intent to the D1 school of his choice.

  5. 1. Smith at Owsley

    2. Coldiron at Powell

I think these are the only two underacheivers in the region that don't have the clout or backing to stay put. I think Hall at Breathitt would come a distant third. I think he has another year before the heat really goes up. Powell has the third largest enrollment in the 14th. they are supposed to compete year end and year out. It just isn't happening, they can't seem to get any numbers out to play ( less than 15 in entire program 9-12) and community support and attendance is at all time lows.

  6. Powell has lost a lot. To pick them to outright win the 56th? They will compete because Varney will have them ready and believing but Lee returns the entire boat,Owsley can't be overlooked with new coach and returning talent and estill always has talent and competes. Should be a great district and no patsies here. Can Powell fill the void in center,on the mound, and behind the plate. I know they have some quality second baseman that can play and help fill that void but the other 3 will be tough.

  7. Great post JeterFan. And i'm curious......how could it "quickly happen" that Coach Combs could coach at any power house school in KY? Would some fire their current coach for him?? Give me a break......

I would venture to say that if a school is serious about it's baseball program then there are not 30 to 35 jobs statewide that are secure if someone like Coach Combs came knocking and said I want to coach here. I wasn't saying that Harrison would fire Coach Whitaker! All I was trying to illustrate was that he would be an excellent coach at any level in any school in KY. PERIOD :dancingpa

  8. I look forward to it and hope him nothing but the best. As Granny used to say the proof will be in the puddin'. All I was saying is that baseball is not as easy to pick up in midstream and maintain a high level of competency. With him not playing last year I just quetioned his ability to be on the list. I truly hope he is on that list at seasons end and we all will eat some crowe. Great athlete and will have a nice catcher to throw to in Bowling.

  9. Coaches make mistakes daily but good coaches have their teams prepared to win and Coach Combs is by far the best in the region at doing that. I agree that the decision last year was questionable but we don't know the circumstances. It wasn't like he didn't advance a runner or just froze up. He made a personnel decision and it cost him. I am sure he is harder on himself than we can ever be to him. He is still the BENCHMARK for coaches in the mountains to emulate. It is a good thing he loves the community he lives in because there are a lot of powerhouse baseball programs that would love to have him across the state. Anyone can go to a tier 3 or 4 school but he is one that can move to a tier1 baseball school anytime he chooses to do so.

  10. The owls can't seem to get it together and with their talent in 3 positions they should be a better team. Coaching can't seem to get them on the same page. Cut Powell's lead to 3 at one time and then coaching let it vault back to 15 without a timeout, change, or substitution. I am sure that the gentleman that coaches there is a quality guy but he just isn't getting it done. IMO.I have only seen the Owls 6 times this year. Any opinions from the Owl faithful.

  11. Brossart is strong in the post with 4 or 5 guys they run at you. Well coached and I diidn't see anyone yesterday that could handle them in Richmond. I am a little surprised that Lee didn't make a better showing but were simply outmatched in the post. I heard on the radio as I was leaving the parking lot that Rich only had 1 rebound. You can't win any tourney like that. Fetters looked good, Brandenburg as always was steady, and the twins played hard.Lee was just simply outgunned. Congrats to the Mustangs and good luck. We are still proud of Lee and hope they continue to make a habit of playing in Richmond in future years.

  12. He has started eighth graders and freshman the past 3 years. Watch his culmination of seniors display there talents this year. Even going to regional tourneys as a runnerup, Lee has nearly played spoiler to the eventual regional winner Hazard both years and not to mention Powell has had back to back runner ups in the region. Still the best coach in the 14th but he is among some other fine coaches ( Melton,Hammonds,Meehan, Dixon and Wood).
