  1. First off no he shouldnt go ahead and sign to the D1 school of his choice first off cause he is not good enough and wont be and niether was the catcher from last year so i dont know where that off the wall comment came from. But just because he is an underclassman doesnt mean he cant be or wasnt better. The only thing keeping him out of the lineup was seniority and his hitting. Ill admit last years catcher could outhit him but behind the plate this years catcher is better. As far as throwing out runners go last years catcher may have thrown out about one or two and when your pitcher is afraid to throw an 0-2 curve in the dirt then you know you have problems behind the plate. Although that particular catcher was much improved from his junior to senior year he still is just not the natural defensive catcher that powell has this year. So i disagree that the biggest hole that they have to fill is behind the plate. Now at the plate hitting is a different story they will have troubles but they still have Muncie and King, and hopefully a couple of the young guys can step up and help them out. But anyways im just respectfully disagreeing with you. And by the way only 2 players left out of last years 5 still playing college ball. Maynard at Lindsey Wilson and Billings at Pikeville, what happened to Banjo remains a mystery to me and Shoemaker transferred to Morehead and Tipton never went. :thumb:

Who exactly do you think the catcher is going to be this year? I know that only 2 of the 5 are still playing but 4 of the 5 could have played. And filling the hole behind the plate isn't just my opinion. You might want to talk with the coaching staff and other folks around the program. That is one of their problems and the other will be putting runs on the board. You evidently don't know much of the stats from last year either when you refer to throwing out runners and you surely don't know anything about pitchers afraid to throw 0-2 curve balls. It wasn't their decision. All pitches were called by the coaching staff. I am sure Powell will have a young man step up and do a good job but to say that there was a kid on the team last year that was a better catcher than the one that left is crazy and if you use hitting as the reason he played then you must of forgot about the dh and Coach Dean would have played anyone ahead of that young man if they could have done the job. I am sure you feel the way you feel but I think you are in the minority. JMO Coach Varney has his hands full but he is just the man to stay on the course Powell has been on for 25 years and that is winning districts and always competing for a regional title.

  2. Estill may not be the favorite to win the 14th but I would sure hate to have to play them in the first round of the tourney. They can be dangerous. The first time I saw them they looked great and the next 3 times I have seen them they all seem to be a little selfish. Almost like there is some struggling within the team. Any Estill fans see this or know anything of this. It might just be me! If Estill played every contender in the 14th 10 times on a neutral floor I believe they win 65 to 70 percent of their games.

  3. Great game. Powell did lead by as much as 24 in the first half but PCC played zone much of the first half. Full couurt pressure in second half was to much for Powell to handle. They can't take care of the basketball and rattle easily. Not a very good officiated game on either side. Both coaches either kicked chairs or slammed into scorers both without getting the T. Powell should have never lost a 24 point lead. PCC seemed to under estimate Powell until the wakeup call came in the second half. Stacy put on a defensive exhibition and Amis had a big game with 27 I believe. Powell had the game winner go around and around the cylinder before popping out.

  4. KIDSFAN we all know of your personal problems with Coach Dean. I would be bitter too if I was fired as an assistant. The fact is, he is one of the top coaches in the mountains, and Oz Jackson, one of the most highly respected AD's in the mountains recognized it and hired him as coach at Letcher. It is just a matter of time before he breaks through and wins the big one as you say. The problem I have with your downing of coach Dean is how you are fine with promoting such coaches as Coach Wright of Lee Co. (Basketball) as one of the top coaches and yet he has never even won a district, but find it as acceptable to continually trash Bryan Dean on a public forum. He has one of the most impressive records in the 14th during his tenure. If anyone has any question about his coaching ability I suggest you ask his former bosses in Burley Hudson (Breathitt) or Gene Combs(Lee), or even some of his former players, including Logan Billings. I am sure that they will vouch for Coach Dean and his talent. I personnally find it tiresome to listen at your personal rants and suggest that you give it a rest.

It is obvious you know absolutely nothing about the situations you act like you seem to know about. Based on your comments of a fired coach is absurd and so far from the truth that you can't even imagine. I find humor in the fact that this is a public opinion forum and folks just like you are OK with it's content as long as it doesn't affect you and yours. As for you being above all of this you have some nerve to bring the name of a young man into this that has nothing to do with post, so to act as if you are so far above the ranting as you called it is hypocritical. I will stand on my own opinion based on the facts as I know them to be the truth and not gossip as you have based your comments on. Based on the rules listed in BG preps you should be suspended for attempting to disclose the identity of members. If you don't like the opinions of the posts I suggest you not read them. Let him win the big one as he should at the largest school in the 14th and I will reevaluate my opinion but until then it is my opinion and if you would take your blinders off you might be somewhat less biased yourself. I never said he wasn't a good coach, I only sated he wasn't in the top 5 in the 14th as the post suggested. You really don't want to get into what happened when he left and how he left Powell Co. It wouldn't be pleasing to you at all. :fire:

  5. If I am not mistaken, Powell Co. met a pretty good Perry Central team at least 2 or the 3 years from 96-99 in the first round of the Region.[/quoteThat is true and to say that Powell has not contended for the regional title is foolish. Regional runner up 5 times in the 80's, 4 times in the 90's. Had won consecutive district titles from 1977 to 1986 and from 1988 to 1995. Powell has always been in contention for a regional title. Top 6 maybe but top 4 or 5 doubtful. If he can win a regional title with the largest school in the 14th I will concede that he moves up a notch. No grudge, I am just asking for someone to prove to me that he can be put ahead of coaches who have won regional titles in the ever competetive 14th. I will listen to the debate over rather he should be above Melton or Wood. That is still undecided but ahead of Hammonds, Meehan, Dixon and Combs, NOT A CHANCE.
  6. i see where your coming from pat dad trust me i think coach hammonds is a great coach and would love for my kid to play for coach hammonds fact of the matter is he hasnt had the success that he once did. And kids fan from 96-99 Powell did not have a district championship and had 0 regional tournament wins...obviously when dean came to powell in 00' he was doing something right because that 00' team(deans first year) made it to the regional finals with a huge upset over KCC in the first round which at the time were favored to win the region.

You are partially right. Those three years were Powell's only hiccup over the past 30 years. Dean still did nothing at Powell that was'nt being accomplished prior to him arriving on the scene with the exception of those dreaded 3 years. Dean may be a decent coach but to put him in the top 5 of the 14th is a real stretch. :walk:
