  1. Junior Gabe Schultz went the distance for the Birds on the mound. Senior Mitch Meyer led the way at the plate with 2 doubles. Freshman catcher Luke Hennigan also came up with a big AB in which he laid down a successful suicide squeeze to break the 3-3 tie.

Birds head to Bellevue tomorrow to take on the tigers.

  2. Walsh did pitch well, but I was surprised to see him throw 125 pitches this early in the season. Especiallly how cold it was.

This is the warmest march this region has ever seen. It's given coaches the chance to get kids out in the bullpen and stretch them out that way. Now, 125 may be pushing it but I dont know the kid or the situation, but not outta the relm of possibility.

  3. Much needed win for the Birds. Solid outing by Soph Ben Vermeil going 6 innings giving up 4 runs. (2 in the 1st) Nice hitting performances by, freshmen Henningan and Whitford, as well as junior Murray.

Birds look to stay in the W column with 2 games on Saturday at Highland Park and 2 Sunday before heading out for Spring Break.

  4. I think that 4 classes is plenty. What is the reward for the number of teams with sub .500 records making the playoffs? While you can say its for the kids, the amount of diservice that we are doing by the "everyone makes it" attitude is really bad. What do these kids work for if they skate into the playoffs? I guess its on the coaches to motivate and keep the attention of the kids, but anymore no one works for anything.

  5. I wonder what the other Highlands qb thinks about that?

He probably thinks what all other Bluebirds think. If I win the QB job, GREAT! If I dont, how can I help keep the streak of titles alive and well?? While I think McCoy will be the QB, and the politically correct answer is to say that the competition is wide open, I would be shocked if he is not. Houliston will find a way to contribute, and who knows, it might be at a position that suites him better and gives him the chance to excel.

  6. Had a chance to go over to Redsfest tonight with the wife and little one. The Reds do a great job putting this on and really give back to the community with lots of fan interaction with players both past and present. The kids only press conference was good as well. the only thing that I saw that I would have to change was the autograph lines and the autograph seekers. Seems like there are roughly 4 different lines that they rotate players through to get either pictures or autographs. The lines are SO long that it would be tough to entertain a young one to get to the front of the line. The other issue is the people that are seeking the signatures for profitable gain as opposed to personal interest. The amount of 40-50 year old men that litterally have a suitcase filled with bats, balls, 8x10's and other memorabilia is CRAZY!! the only thought I had was maybe if there was a way to have the item personalized by the players ie. "To Matt, Best Wishes Herm Winningham" I think this would let the people that are there for the love of the game and the love of the Reds enjoy the experience more. Overall it is a class act from top to bottom!

  7. Whenever I hear Leach's name mentioned and see people get in an uproar because they want him at UK, I can't help but crack up. This guy never won a dang thing at a program MUCH MUCH more attractive than UK, against much less competition, but yeah, he'd be able to compete in the SEC. Makes zero sense. So he has an exciting style. Congrats, instead of just being a losing team, you're now exciting losers!

  8. Our son has been playing football since he was 6 years old. Being from outside the NKY area, we didn't know squat about the local area high school football programs. We started attending local games on friday nights. One school kept drawing us back and it was HHS. It just "felt good" to go to watch games there and experience the community coming together to support their school team. We endured the NKYFL, BCPWL and Kenton Co. middle school programs. We finally got him into the FTJFL and the change was almost instantaneous. He loved the game again. He had such bad experiences with the other groups that we thought he would never play again. After his 8th grade championship game, all of the players were grouped not by original team color, but were seated next to a member of the opposite color jersey. Blue, white, blue, white, etc. Coach Mueller told the boys that there were no longer a Red, Green, Gold or Blue team. They were ALL Highlands now. They were his Frosh Team for this year. His speech was moving as well as motivating. That is the kind of coach he is. But make no mistake, they are all held accountable. You will not have any incidents like what has occured at other schools this year. He doesn't put the fear of God into them, because he doesn't have to. Kids WANT to play for him because they will become better players under him. They will learn the game, and learn to love the game, which in turn make them stronger players and stronger teammates.

Do we live in Ft Thomas? No. Do we want a better education for our son than what he could get at our district school? Yes. Do we pay to send him to HHS? Yes. Were we recruited? NO. NO. NO. Would I ever send him to his assigned district school? No way in H*LL, especially after what went on there this year. My only regret? Not putting both of our children in the Ft Thomas school system sooner.

    Nice post..

  9. FGS, Highlands is good year in and year out because they recruit! It ain't parental support (that came after they began to win) or school support (HHS's budget is no greater than any other top flite hs program in Ky). It's because kids, way back at the start of the program building the coaches went after the players! Now, maybe they don't have to as much because of reputation, but it still goes on, just like elsewhere - just pick your sport.
