I think the 14th is typically one of the weaker regions in the state, and its even moreso this year.
-
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say...Magoffin.
-
How could anyone say Breathitt is not a bad team? Here we are on January 11, and they have exactly one win. That's a bad team any way you slice it.
-
Tonight must be upset night.
In the 14th region, anything is possible this year...except for Breathitt winning a game apparently?

Here's the scoop on Jimmy Hammondfrom Falmouth High School. He graduated in 1962.He was about 6ft.4in. and about 230lbs. he averaged about 25 a game and was one of the best rebounders ever in the region. he currently lives in Falmouth and is a friend of mine . And yes he was very good!!!
Go Wildcats
I've heard Talbert Turner was pretty good, but he was finished playing before I was old enough to watch a game and know what was going on. He did go to Morehead for a little while, didn't he?

You'l need to go back a few years to find the best players ever from Breathitt County. IMO, it would be between one the following :
"Big" Earl Stevens....The 6'7 center is still a legend in Breathitt County. Took the Bobcats to the state tournament all four years he played. Would have probably won the 1962 title if he hadn't broke his leg and didn't play.
Larry Noble.....His 1967 team nearly won the state championship. They lost in the semifinals to eventual champ Earlington after leading for most of the game. The Bobcats finished something like 37-2 that year. Some at the semifinal game said it wasn't exactly the best called game in the world. One former player told me it was the only time he had ever seen Coach Farice Woods cry after a game. The 6'5 Noble went on to star for Austin Peay.
Arch Johnson......His team played in the state tournament in the early '70's. Won the first game in the tournament over Covington Catholic when Philip Lovely hit a last second shot. The 6'6 Johnson could play point guard if called on, but usually played the 2 or 3 spot. He went on to a stellar career at Morehead State after being courted by the Kentucky Wildcats the same year they signed Kevin Grevey, Jimmy Dan Conners, Mike Flynn, and Bob Guyette. One of his visits to UK was with that group, and the Barnstable twins, who were UK cheerleaders, were their tour guides around campus. But in the end he decided on an All-Conference career at Morehead State.

I've heard a lot about Johnson and Stevens. I figured Breathitt had had a few better than the two I listed, but I can only talk about what I've seen.

At Breathitt, the most talented player I ever watched was Johnny Stacy, but the player I'd actually want on my team was Scott Moore. That's from about '87-present. I can't speak for the years before that, but I know we've had some pretty good ones.

It's looking like wins will be scarce for the Bobcats this year. Just curious as to who you think they might beat and how many games they will win. Looking at the schedule and the way they've played this year, and I'd say 5 wins will be hard to muster. Ouch! :scared:

1. Bell County
2. Pikeville
3. Belfry

Personally, I think 2A over the last 15 years is stronger than class A. If 2A had been in the current alignment for 15 years, then it would be a closer argument. But the fact that Boyle, Danville, and LexCath were in 2A for a decent part of that time, along with Breathitt, Belfry and others gives 2A a bit of an edge.

Many teams do: Henry Clay, Manual, X, Fern Creek, Ballard...
With all due respect to everyone...I didn't see any of these teams play, but I feel safe in saying that when Trinity and X step on the football field to play high school teams in KY, they are rarely....very rarely, the lesser talented of the two.
I suspect T's talent was better than Henry Clay's, but I could be wrong.
-
I suspect Henry Clay finished exactly where their talent dictated. The semi-finals against Trinity.

1. St. X
2. Trinity
3. LexCath
4. Bowling Green
5. NCC
6. Russell
7. Mayfield
8. O-Cath

1. Best overall team in KY by the end of the year: I know it will make some people mad, but I'm still going to go with St. X. Trinity won when it counted and I congratulate them for that, but I still think X was the best team.
2. Biggest pleasant surprise: Despite a dissappointing finish, I think it was the Hazard Bulldog's great season.
3. Biggest dissappointment: For me personally, I was hoping Breathitt County would be better than they turned out, but I think Prestonsburg was a bigger dissappointment. I honestly thought they had a chance to win 2A when the season started.
4. Best single game in the state: St. X vs. John Hardin in the 4A playoffs.
5. Best player: Justin Burke - Lexington Catholic
6. Best coach: I'm gonna go with Trinity's coach for getting his team to pull the upset against X.
7. Most interesting/intriguing storyline: To me it was LexCath's march through the playoffs. They won a shoot-out with CovCath, then their supposedly spotty defense shuts out Highlands, and then they hang 49 on a Bowling Green defense that was supposed to be one of the best we've seen in a while. They proved they could win games by any means necessary, and they did it with the monkey of past playoff defeats on their back. Nice job.
-
I'd say Trinity, because they're good every year without exception and a regular in the 4A title game.
-
Congratulations to Russell. Glad to see you guys get the championship...and keep it in the east, where it belongs... :thumb:
-
Chris Cessna????? He didn't play.
That's what I was thinking.
-
I think you can say a lot of coaches could take Trinity or St. X to the title game consistently, but that doesn't mean the coaches they have aren't great. That means that their programs demand excellence from their football teams and it starts at the top. That means that when they hire a coach, they get a good one. Sure the numbers are an advantage, it's silly to say otherwise. But only because they have such great programs. There are plenty of schools with a large pool of kids that aren't good football schools.
Some people seem to think its the numbers, and only the numbers that makes them great. Not me. I think the dedication to their programs is what makes their numbers such a big advantage.
-
I think X easily.
Although, those teams that had to play X twice, might have a good argument.
-
Boone has never won a state title.
Look at those numbers his senior year, unbelievable.
What's so special about 200+ ypg and 3 or 4 TD's per game...
-
I disagree that the vote should be for who has the best chance of playing in the NFL. The vote should be for who was the best high school senior football player in the state for that season not who has the best potential to be a pro player.
I do agree that both have had exceptional high school careers. I would have to vote for Burke as his numbers are outstanding, and he has taken his team to a place they have never been before in the state title game.
I'd go with Burke, and I think he'll get it.
What about Fidler? What was his #'s? I know they weren't as good as Burke's, I'm just curious.
-
I don't think Russell will be overwhelmed by O-Cath's offense, unless they are just superior athletically across the board (and I don't expect that to be the case).
Russell's defensive scheme against a spread/passing offense looked pretty solid against Breathitt County in '02.
-
From an obvious outsider POV, I think St. X will win, but it will be much closer than the previous meeting. Blowouts are very, very rare in this series, so its hard to imagine it happening twice in one season.

When PCC loses to June Buchanan and Hazard loses to Jackson City...the region is down. Period.
