  1. Some of it is a little crazy, but there are also some great choices.

I was all ready to go on a tirade about Nick Schickel from St. X not being on there, and then I saw he was first team! Excellent choice. A good job by the sportswriters to pick up on that - a kid short on talent compared to some of the very top kids, but absolutely the most fundamentally sound DB in the state and one who performed at as high a level as anyone in leading maybe the state's best secondary.

I'll take Ben Revere as the top DB in the state but I was glad to see Schickel on there. I was very impressed with him!

  2. A lot of schools do this. They have an agreement with neighboring counties to release kids into their District if they live close. Jefferson Co has no lines. I think Bowling Green's top player pays to be in their School District.

  3. I would also like to congratulate Justin Burke on arguably the best season as a QB in the history of KY High School Football! He will go down as one of the best High School players ever. It could be argued that he is the best ever to play the position. If you are going to argue the best ever it would be with Couch and Brohm which is pretty good company to be in. That's sacred ground to the KY High School Football fan! He is a team guy and I hope he brings home the big prize Sat for his team.

  4. Burke has thrown for 62 T.D.'s this year! That is more than Tim Couch, Brian Brohm or any QB you want to put in that slot. That is unreal within itself! Add 1,000+ rushing over his carrear and that is impressive. Throw in his G.P.A.+ leadership skills and he is the all american athlete. He is in the elite leauge of Tim Couch and Brian Brohm on the KY High School QB level! Burke has also LED his team to it's first ever state championship. Did I add he only has 5 int's in his all time record breaking 62 T.D. season?

  5. Ammons would be my top pick from Franklin Co. The kid at Laffeyette is really good too. Corey Humphrey at Lawrence Co and the Cashen kid at Corbin are two of the better ones in Eastern Ky. Dylan Grandon at North Oldham has a lot of potential and experience in the Louisville area.

  6. I know a lot of good coaches that if given his talent year in, year out would do more with it. Being a good coach is doing something outstanding and until this year he hasn't done anything amazing. I also heard that the QB for Lex Cath is calling the plays on the offense so maybe it is a just a very talented kid making him look good. Maybe he should hope to be so lucky again next year.

You say until this year he hasn't done anything amazing??? Can you give me any other programs that have been around for only 15 years and are as stable as the one he has built? Do you not think putting together an amazing string of 10+ win seasons is something to be proud of? I love how the haters just discount teams like St X, Male, Highlands, Boyle, Rockcastle, Danville, Cov Cath etc are cake wins. Those are big time wins! Burke is as good as it gets but do your really think he just calls plays on his own or is there a chance that Coach Sphire has coached him up so much that he is able to do that? That stuff is probably way over your head. This is also 2005 and the thread is Coach of the year in 2005. Most coaches I know would be pretty happy sitting at 13-1 on the season (with the only loss to St X on a FG with 6 seconds left in the game) and a chance to play for the state championship Sat!

I think you guys make yourself look bad enough so I'll just let you keep dogging coaches on here. At times I think it is important to stick up for good people that deserve better though. The title of this thread is Coach of the Year not bash the coaches you have a personal problem with!

With that said, congrats to the final selections. There have been a lot of great coaches named in this thread. I think High School football in KY has come a long ways the past ten or so years and the biggest part IMO is the quality of coaches we have in KY. There are a lot of people that could very well deserve this award which speaks volumes with were football in KY is going!

  7. Do you know how many D1 players Rockcastle has had in the history of the school? ONE, and they have won more than one regional championship.( now that is coaching) Do you think that Rock had more talent Lex Cath last night or anytime? No and they still played their tails off.

I don't think I've ever been dumb enough to get on here and say that Coach Larkey and Coach Sailor aren't two of the best coaches in the state because they are! It's obvious you have personal problems with Coach Sphire. As to your question of Rockcastle having better talent last night my answer would be that Lex Cath had better team speed while Rockcastle was MUCH bigger! Both coaches coach to the strength of their team that's why they are two of the best!

Do you not get out and watch any High School football? You act like Lex Cath is the mecca of D1 players and they should have won it all every year. Do you realize they lost in the playoffs to teams like Danville, Highlands, Cov Cath, Boyle etc? If you don't get out much those teams have A TON of tradition and have produced their fair share of D1 players themselves! I think it's a slap in the face to those teams that you act like they haven't done anything to prove themselves and they should have been beaten every year! It's not like they've been blown out in the playoffs by cupcake teams. The teams that have beaten them were top teams in KY with some of the top talent.

Anyways the past is the past. You can dog coaches all you want on here, it's easy to do behind a computer screen. The bottom line is the people that know him think VERY highly of him and he is coaching in the state championship this weekend. You can try to tarnish what he has worked his tail off but the people that have a clue know how good of a Coach he is. Have you ever won a National Champinonship? Have you taken a program that has only been in existance for 15 years and produced a program that has won over 10 games for the last 5 or more years? Have you ever coached a team that has beaten St X, Male,Boyle Co, Highlands, Cov Cath, Rockcastle, Bowling Green etc etc etc? I'm pretty sure most coaches would feel pretty good about those accomplishments. Fire back all you want and hate all you want. His accomplishments speak for themselves! He could coach my son any day of the week! Has it ever dawned on you that he might just make some of those kids D-1 players? Do you think all of those guys go on to play college ball if they play in a different system?

Feel free to PM. I'm sure everybody else is getting tired of us breaking up what should be a positive thread about the men that work so hard in this state to do good things for the young men of Kentucky!

  8. Coach Haywood has done another great job at Belfry this year and should be in the mix again especially with the talent they lost.

I would love to see Russell win one for Ivan (and Coach Morriss). They are one of those teams that win every year but things haven't worked out late in the playoffs. Great program and great staff there!

  9. I think that Coach Sphire past record speaks for itself. Like HTTC said every year he has the best players in Lexington and surrounding areas mostly D1 players and I do believe this would be his first regional title. He may win the state championship this year, but if he does it should be his 5th or 6th not his 1st. I have heard his past players call his playoff losing streak "yearly choke". I also dont think that leaving your starting QB in during the second half to throw a TD to make the score 77-0 against a struggling is a class move (Bourbon Co.) maybe he was getting back at them for beating him twice in 97, while he had 7 D1 players and Bourbon had 0. I have the right to like who I want. I am glad I can amuse you. Go ROCK!

Newsflash it's 2005! Lex Cath is Regional Champs and Coach Sphire has done a great job! I'm not even going to address the accusations you make about previous players as they stop by every week and see him. He is a players coach of players coaches! I'd say you are right though about Bourbon Co. I'm sure that beating they took in 97 has really been boiling inside of him and he fianlly decided (even though they have played them every year since then and Bourbon has gone through TWO coaching staffs since then) that he is going to take his anger out this year! Not much gets by you! Thanks for another good laugh! :thumb:
