  1. very bad idea

It's not a bad idea. In fact, it's a very good one. Do you know what I normally do between the semifinals and final.....waste time. Like the rest of us who are there in Lexington. Now, I have a game to go to. So the kids playing on Saturday won't be there but there will be plenty to fill in. Should be a fun game and a great charity!

East in a romp someone said? Ummm, I was going to say West rolls just looking at these two rosters.

  2. Heard today from an assistant in the Louisville-area that it's finally official? Anybody know for sure? He said he has applied at Henry County and was told that Martin was headed to North Oldham for sure??? Kind of a weird situation with this opening.

  3. Just wanted to wish the North Oldham team good luck the rest of the way. Some good kids on that team and very tough time for the program.

All over the news in Louisville tonight that Derek Walcott was fired for misconduct that lets just say a teacher shouldn't be doing.

These kids have now been through three coaches in three years. Kevin Allen is a really good player and they played a brutal schedule. Good luck to the Mustangs the rest of the season!

  4. There are a lot of good running backs out there. Just because someone leads the state in rushing, regardless of the circumstances and competition level, doesn't necessarily mean they are among the top three or four running backs in the state.

As for Phelps and Senn ... who knows? You're in Louisville so you have a better handle on it than I do. I will say that Perry Thomas' team has faced Phelps twice in his career and that he was impressive in both games. That could have been a factor in the decision to choose him over some others.

You are correct on the RB comment westsider...but that's a lot of yards against not bad competition. So the kid has to be good!

As far as Senn and Phelps, absolutely no doubt Senn is the better player on both sides of the ball. And I saw both of them about the same amount. Honestly, I thought Senn was the best player in Louisville during the final five weeks of the season because he was doing it on both sides. I don't even know the Senn kid - have met him - but my only beef as a h.s. football fan is a kid gets the shaft over a kid that he not only burned for a TD but also held to under 20 yards receiving in their meeting! Or hey I'll go even farther and say he should have made it over his teammate - Donnell. No question who the better player of those two was this season.

    But oh well. Go Kentucky!

  5. Common sense? I'm sure the entire All-Star coaching staff and selection committee watched film and evalutated each potential all-star player. I'd be willing to bet in all 3 cases there were players at their position with more SPEED. The combination of size and speed is what wins all-star games (well, any game for that matter) and while Sauerbeck, Blume, and Senn are good players, there were apparently others that were more impressive on film to the coaching staff and selection committee. The objective is to win, which is something the all-star team has done a lot of the past 5 years against Tennesse with the present selection process.

Ummm, in the few Trinity games I saw Senn ran away people - including Garnett Phelps. Phelps is a good player but had a horrible season. Like I said before, the coaches missed the boat here and I would also say I only saw Blume once but when you lead the state in rushing you should get a shot on the All-Star team.

  6. Also--don't be too sure that this is going to happen.

Starting next year--schools are not supposed to let kids out early to participate in athletic events. I don't think that the BOE is going to go for this unless it is a one time thing--and it is my understanding that it isn't going to be.

Well, I guess it is going to happen! Here's from the KHSAA website

BOARD SETS 2006 FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SCHEDULE

The KHSAA Board of Control, at its meeting on Monday, approved the schedule of games for the 2006 KHSAA State Football Championships to be played at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. The Class 4A Championship will be Thursday, Nov. 30 with a tripleheader set for Friday, Dec. 1. The 4A contest will kick off at 7:30 p.m. (ET). Friday’s schedule will have the Class AA Championship at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Class A Championship at 3:30 p.m. and the Class AAA Championship at 7:30 p.m.

The schedule was approved due to the University of Louisville’s Big East home game scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2.

  7. Very good post 3, Also there is a coach from each area that helps in the selection process. There is also a list of alternate players to fill the slots of players who for some reason or another can't make the trip.

They say the coaches are voted on. :thumb:

But no major problems with the coaches, there are a lot of good ones out there and many will get a chance in the future.

But I will agree with Ox and say it's a major, major mistake to leave Eric Senn off this year's team. Honestly, after watching more than 50 teams last season (from all parts of the state) I thought he was one of the top 5-10 players of any class in the state. Maybe Yale said no but I doubt it!

I hope some coach out there agrees with me and tells coach Thomas if they need another player that he has a guy who could start on both sides of the ball for him and on special teams sitting at home!

  8. Back to the thread!!!!

Male is the hottest team in town but still going to be a war in the Seventh Region. J'town beat Trinity by two in OT tonight, Ballard only beat St. X by five and Fern Creek is rolling along also.

PRP is hottest in the Sixth but Fairdale made it a close game on Tuesday. Doss is starting to play like they did early in the season again.

It's almost March! Nothing like the Gardens in March!

  9. They looked poor in the Toyota Classic in Georgetown last month. I would have given them a 0% chance to win the 7th region on the heals of that performance.

Did you watch the same team? They lost to a VERY good E'town team by five and then won their next two games by 20 and 35. Male is very talented and coach Crews has them playing his tough style defense. That can be scary because he has a lot more athleticism and talent than he did at DeSales.

With Ballard, I agree they are not a top five team but still one of the best 10-15 teams in the state. The Seventh Region is going to be dynamite. It's the most parity I have ever seen - J'town, Male, Eastern, Fern Creek and Ballard - are the tops - and St. X, Trinity and Manual can sneak up and knock any of those teams off on a given night. It will be fun.

  10. Ballard is at # 20 in the state Cantrall rating, and 4th in the 7th region.

A bigger question would be how is John Hardin 2nd, while Elizabethtown is 9th, and E-Town has defeated them 2 out of 3 this year....the last time about a week ago on JH's home court.

Umm, no Ballard is No. 3 in the current Cantrall ratings on the Herald-Leader website right now????

And to be honest, that's probably not too far off. Other than Jeffersontown, Ballard is playing as well as anybody in Louisville right now. They have turned it around, plus the eight losses are all to teams in the top 20 (except St. X).

Don't be surprised to see Chris Renner in the Sweet 16 again

  11. Remember the U of L game is an ESPN game and they don't even know the time. Plus, I think I heard on WHAS the other night that even if they wanted to ESPN doesn't allow anything else in the stadium on a game day!

The best scenario is two on Friday and two on Sunday! Can you imagine the crowd for a Trinity-St. X Class 4-A title game next year at 4 p.m. on Sunday!

  12. I know Shawnee doesn't get a lot of ink or anything but I did read where they hired a guy that I think will do a really good job.

Jason Hawkins is 30 and his father, Dennis, was the longtime coach at Clarksville (Ind.). I met Jason several years ago when he was an assistant at Iroquois and he was helping his father for years.

He's a good young coach so good luck to Jason!

  13. Expect Brian Wright to be announced in the middle of the week.

I talked with a teacher from there and he said it's just waiting approval from the school system. In case you don't know, Wright is a former Bob Redman assistant coach and turned the Western program from nothing into a winner in just a few short years. He's runs Redman's defense and likes to open it up on offense. The Fairdale community is one of the best in Louisville as far as support so he should do a great job.

  14. Bart Bruner would be an outstanding pick!

He turned the Southern program around some - now dropped back since he left - and has been a defensive coach at X for like two years.

All I've ever heard is that he's great with kids. Surprised he would want to leave the X den with what they have coming back but a this would be a great hire for Nelson and good opportunity for Bart!

  15. I am sure that most everyone on BGP has, at many times, scratched their heads in amazment at the recruiting (lack of recruiting) process that goes on here locally. MANY in state players left out to dry and fend for themselves. Many would be shocked at the amount of interest shown to some of the top recruits by our local universities. I think UK does a better job of showing interest in the local talent and good old WKU seems to benefit from the lack of interest shown by UofL. I talked with a former coach yesterday that told me his son ( a well known senior ) is getting very little interest from the D1 schools. This is not a shock as this has been going on for years. A product of Kentucky being known as a "basketball" state. A few big years when there were many talented seniors ready to go to college and still not much action from local schools to recruit them. Nothing bothers me more when you see our local universities signing 2nd, 3rd, & 4th best prospects from Florida, Georgia, UTAH(?) when a blue chipper in state goes to IU or Michigan or NC State. I know a lot of people will respond that the 3rd, 4th best players in FL and GA are that much better but that is yet to be proven. Also, why do we offer these troubled recruits chance after chance and a good kid never even gets one shot. There used to be a time when a recruiter actually asked, "what kind of kid is this recruit?' " Is this kid coachable, dedicated, and a hard worker?" "If I had a daughter would this kid be the kind of person I would let her date?" This is the time of year I think about these things, the fall football season is when I start thinling about the local talent playing out of state.

OK, not a huge U of L fan here but I think the Cards have fared very well with in-state players. They do it the right way - take the best ones they can get and then get the rest of their roster filled with kids from Florida, Georgia, Ohio, wherever. I LOVE high school football in Kentucky but we all must admit the second, third and probably farther down the list in Florida is more often than not going to be better than what we have in Kentucky. It's just a fact.
