  1. 2001 was probably one of the closest. 48-47 Dixie over Calvary. Other than that, it was 8+ most of the other years. However, the game did seem a little closer than 15 points. When Bowman and the Millers are on for Dixie, they are a tough team to beat.

Maybe you meant one of the closer finals in the last decade:D . Couldn't tell you if that's the case.

As for Lloyd, they have some pretty good talent, but their coaching staff is still looking for clue one.

  2. If he stays down low when they play in the region then Ludlow might give some teams some fits because he will be hard to stop and if they bring people down to double him then that would be leaving some of their good shooters open like Chase King, and Jarrett Rouse.

He hasn't stayed down there yet in his career, probably just a little late to start now  Maybe if he stayed there once in awhile Ludlow wouldn't have been 1-12 or 13 in non D-III games this season.

  3. There is a good chance that some of these guys will be playing varsity. The AABC team you are referring to is the KY Kids, and you are correct, they were very good. They won nationals 2 or 3 years ago in thier age group, and the have been exposed to some top notch coaching (Bill Holocher, Rich Maile, Mike Shover and a couple others). There are a couple other HS's that will benefit from having players from this team.

The all region team in 4 years will look like a roster from this team.

If they won "nationals" two or three years ago and didn't repeat or even threepeat, what's the problem?

  4. Goetz had a good group that was coming back this year......Lantry, Steenken, Busse and Ryan all had varsity experiance.......next year i think we will see how good of a coach he really is......I think it has to Go to Schlarman 20 wins from 9 last year that is a tremendous turn around.........my vote goes to Willy

Willie had his whole group back. Maybe they underachieved last year rather than overachieved this year :sssh: . Or maybe the schedule had more than a little to do with the turnaround. :D

  5. Simon Kenton is primarily plays a man to amn defense almost exclusively. I will go against the grain here and nominate Phil Schambach. Phil has done a great job for th Pioneers and I would love for him to get some recognition!

From what I've seen, Schambach may be the most underrated player in Northern Kentucky.

  6. HC had plenty of talent without Giwa & CCH had plenty of talent without Maile, etc, etc, etc.

If all the kids who played JV or varsity as freshmen this year were to play freshman ball only, I'm sure the results would still be the same because all the teams have kids in this situation.

As a side note, I would also say bringing these kids down HURTS your freshman team a lot of times vs helping it! Many times it changes the whole complexion of your team and kids that would develop don't now get that chance.

This is really a non-issue in the freshman tournament!

Pretty sure I already said all of the above, but thanks for the help.

  7. Colonels have a huge advantage in freshman basketball over a lot of schools. They have a good amount of talent on every level. So most freshman don't move up.

I mean this is a whole different tournament if every schools best freshman is playing down.

CCH is coached well at freshman level and do what they should do bottom line.

You're going to have let this one go. If HC had Giwa playing down, he would bring a lot to their team. CovCath also has a freshman not playing on that level, and he'd bring a lot to their team. Boone and Conner also have kids "playing up" that would help their squads.

Bottom line none of these kids would dominate the freshman ranks like men among boys. That's not how it works.

The freshman tournament is what it is, and CovCath does a nice job with it.

  8. Interestingly enough, the last team not to win the freshman regional ended up winning the 9th as seniors.

Freshman basketball is fun and great to watch, but it is not an accurate indicator of things to come. Like cshs mentioned, there are far too many variables involved. Most importantly, freshman playing JV and/or Varsity.

Great point. A freshman who played up in that class may have had an impact on the freshman tournament. I think his name began with an N.... Neistheide maybe, how'd he turn out?

  9. It seems that they need to get that killer instinct. You hit the nail on the head when you talk about the post position. They are a very good team when when Josh plays well. I would not count them out as far as the region goes, hopefully they will straighten out some and start winning the close ones. Friday at Scott would be a nice place to start!

If you think you have all the answers to SK, then why were are you posting as if you were at the NCC-Holmes game Tuesday, instead of the Pioneers HOME game with Campbell?

  10. I am as much a traditionalist as the next person, but I am curious about the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference that most of the schools in Campbell, Boone and Kenton participate in.

I know that most of those schools are, and always have been, in the ninth region. However, several of those schools are now in other regions...such as Campbell Co., Brossart, Silver Grove, Scott, Simon Kenton, etc...

It seems to me that those schools would want to have the flexibility to play more schools in their regions and that being members of the NKAC hampers that flexibility. I know those schools are in a tough spot, but was just wondering...

what are the advantages of membership in the NKAC?

Not passing judgement at all, but with the regular season limited to 24 games, and with mandatory conference scheduling taking up 8-10 of those slots, plus maybe some districts are seeding and that takes up 3-6 more games, doesn't leave a lot of spots open in the old schedule.

Seems to me this is moot point. Campbell County, for example, still scheduled Ninth Region schools Lloyd, Ludlow, and Newport instead of a tenth region school. They also had room on their schedule for Bracken and Deming, so there is still some freedom there.

  11. I'd agree that Conner is always a "tough out" come regional tourney time & Coach Hicks is a top 3 coach in the 9th (behind Schlarman & Faust).

Hicks isn't top three, or even top five, well maybe top five with all the recent movement of teams (out of region) and coaches to retirement.

  12. While I agree with Dayton not being close, Grayson can't score without the ball, and that has been an issue. The guards have been beat up and have had a tough year.

Not like the guards were playing against future college players, all they have to be is serviceable. The problems seem deeper than this. I think this qualifies as a bad win.

  13. Well, if you don't adjust to the way officials are calling the game, your going to be in for a long night. Did you ever think one of the reasons the 9th doesn't do well in the Sweet Sixteen is because the rest of the state is used to the more physical play allowed by the other officals outside the ninth? Maybe the 9th Region Officials should get the hint and adjust their style more like the rest of the state. Right or wrong, the Ninth Region shouldn't have that disadvantage every year when they go to Rupp.

This statement was true 20 years ago, even 15 years ago, but not anymore. Ninth region refs have totally changed the way they call the game in the last 10 years. They allow as much physical play and hand-to-hand combat as any area in the state now (too much if you ask me). They still protect shooters though, and overall the ninth region has one of the best groups of the officials in the state. Maybe not as good as the top Bluegrass Association guys, but better depth.

  14. He is very religious. First child is named heaven.

Good call OR. Shaun is very religious and I'm sure his daughter's name has everything to do with that, and nothing to with a high school he played against.

I'd go out on a limb and say Shaun has moved on, and a state championship game more than a decade ago is barely even a blip on his radar. :thumb:

  15. Scott is not fast enough to be a great defensive team.

Where do you get that defense is harder than offense?

I said being a good defensive team was easier than offensive. You're the one that said Scott had to "open up" the offense, beat people off the dribble etc.

My question to you is, if they are not fast enough to be a great defensive team, why in the wide world of sports would you want them to employ a beat someone off the dribble offense?

The ball tends to slow kids down, and if they aren't fast to begin with how would they ever gain an advantage?
