  1. I'm a little surprised Union County was placed in the 2nd District and not the 1st. Especially considering that Reidland is going bye-bye in a year or two.

I also thought Butler County might end up in the 2nd District (with Union in the 1st).

I'm not sure it's a big issue either way, just not what I expected.

  2. This game could probably go two touchdowns either way.

Caldwell has played the tougher schedule, but last week's blowout loss to Lone Oak likely didn't do much for the Caldwell psyche.

Crittenden has had it pretty easy the last two weeks with McLean and Webster.

There's only one common opponent — Hopkins Central. Crittenden had to come from behind to beat the Storm while Caldwell built a big lead then had to hold on late.

The Tigers will probably need all of their home-field advantage to pull out the win. But I'll take the Tigers 33-29.

  3. According to the best information I could find, Ken Barrett coached the Russellville Panthers 23 seasons, compiling a 171-86 record. His overall record was listed at 246-153.

Barrett also coached at Trigg County and Marshall County. He won three state championships at Russellville.

Barrett played for Butler High School in Princeton in the late 1940s.

  4. Brandon Sigler rushed for 99 yards and 2 TDs, returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown after Calloway had gone up 14-12 in the third quarter, and returned an interception 38 yards for a score in the second quarter. He also handled kickoffs, returned kickoffs and punts and punted — one punt went 70 yards — and took several snaps at quarterback.

Think I also saw him mopping up the locker room after the game.

  5. I think Lyon County tried to start a youth league years ago, but just couldn't generate enough interest.

If a kid at Lyon really, really, really wants to play football, he usually ends up at Caldwell County, best I can tell.

Financially, I think it would be difficult for a small school to start a football program from scratch. Seeing the small crowds at some places, I wonder how they cover their expenses now.

  6. Just for fun, let's look at the stats before we call Caldwell a "passing" team.

The Tigers have thrown the ball 200 times for 1,519 yards and 16 TDs this season. Caldwell has run the ball 247 times for 1,482 yards and 17 TDs this year.

That's over 55 percent runs. Even if you throw out the numbers in two blowouts (vs. Reidland and Webster County when the Tigers ran more than usual in the second half) Caldwell is still running the ball over 50 percent of the time.

It's true Caldwell runs the Tony Franklin spread offense, but it's a mistake to think that all teams that run that offense throw the ball 75 percent of the time (although some do throw it more than others).

Caldwell strives for balance in its attack. Most of its passing game is screens and swing passes. The Tigers will take an occasional shot down the field, but they are hardly a run-and-shoot offense.

All that being said, I think it will be tough for Caldwell to go to Mayfield and win now that the Cardinals seem to have their act together. However, if Caldwell takes care of the ball and gets some timely stops or takeaways, it could be interesting.

The scary part about playing Mayfield late in the year is you usually get a physical contest, which can leave you banged up for the playoffs. I'm not sure that didn't hurt Caldwell last year when it was upset by Heath after losing to Mayfield in the last game of the regular season.

    Since I'm a big homer ;) I'm going with Caldwell 28-21.
