  1. There’s also the fact that NKY folks, including Beechwood and Holmes fans (I suspect), have been complaining about CCH for at least  the last 3-5 years - long before any complaining surfaced about the 5th year dude in Ft Mitchell (of whom, I couldn’t care less about).  So, I guess the fact is there’s plenty of blame to be shared, when it comes to whining.  As an aside, didn’t Holmes have a couple of Ohio players on their last state title team?  I have no idea, but gathered that from BGP chatter at the time.  If I’m wrong, I apologize.

I wonder how many reclassified seniors played varsity as freshmen? The only players truly playing 5 years of varsity are players who also played varsity as freshmen.

Probably not many.  So to state my position more clearly, I believe the high school reclassified players are far more likely to be playing an extra year of varsity sports than a traditional hold back in elementary school.  Even with hold backs/reclassification, I agree that 4 year varsity football players are very rare.

I realize not every reclassified player is a varsity player and again, I have no problem with the rule.  I just don’t believe elementary school hold backs and high school level reclassified students are an apples to apples comparison.

As far as stats go, if the KHSAA doesn’t allow 5 year players anymore (other than the possible reclassified kids for the next 3-4 years), then I guess I understand why their 5th year stats don’t count.  And if their stats don’t count, then they probably shouldn’t be eligible for post season awards either, but, that’s not the KHSAA’s jurisdiction.

But, to take it a step further, if these kids are on the field and helping their team win a sanctioned KHSAA championship, then it’s hard to understand why the stats don’t count.

  3. Off thread for sure, but reading the last post made me curious about geographical success in 5A.

5A football has been in existence since 2007.  NKY based teams have won 6 titles, Warren Co based teams have won 7 titles and Pulaski Co won once.

Side Note: Highlands and Cov Cath were not in 5A 2011-2014.  CCH wasn’t very good during that stretch, but Highlands was, winning 4A in ‘11, ‘12 and ‘14 (runner up in ‘13).

  4. Follow up…

I’m guessing the explanation around 5th year players being eligible for awards, but not have KHSAA records count stems from the fact that the awards aren’t KHSAA awards.

Also, if a kid plays varsity football as an 8th grader and let’s say he or she was held back, I believe their stats would count, as part of a five year varsity career.  So, if that’s the case, then the KHSAA is being inconsistent.  And for the record, I am supportive of the KHSAA’s stance, but I recognize the inconsistency.  I guess the difference between the two is that the 5 year 8th Grade - Senior player (held back or not) was only enrolled in the high school for four years. The high school player taking advantage of the new rule will have been enrolled in high school for five years.

  5. Good.  But, it appears they’re still eligible for post season awards. So be it.  It’s a rule and players/families have a right to take advantage.

For what it’s worth, IMO, the primary difference between the grade school hold backs that everyone compares to this new rule is that the high school kids taking advantage of the rule are getting a 5th year of high school football.  While there are rare exceptions, must of the classic elementary or middle school hold backs, are still playing a traditional four years of high school football.  Or, said differently, no more than four varsity seasons (usually).  I realize there are exceptions.

But, to be clear, I support any family that chose to take advantage of the rule offered.  I simply don’t agree with using the “it’s happened in grade school for years” logic as a parallel. This is different.  And yes, I understand that if an elementary school hold back is talented enough, he or she could play varsity football as an 8th grader and have those stats/records count.  I understand completely.  But, this would be a rare circumstance, by and large.

CovCath has no bearing on Owensboro, if CovCath wins, they play the winner of South Warren's game. If Owensboro wins they play winner of Southwestern/  Douglass

Unless I'm mistaken, if Owensboro, FD, South Warren and Cov Cath win this week, then Owensboro would host South Warren and Cov Cath would travel to FD.

Conversely, if all of the home teams win, then Woodford would host South Warren and FD would host Owensboro.  So, again, unless I'm mistaken, Cov Cath's result has an impact on Owensboro.

I am making the assumption that RPI is "frozen" at the end of the regular season.

Obviously, any upsets would throw all of this out the window.  Apologies if I'm mistaken.

  7. Without looking at any stats, I thought the birds offense was improved last night, compared to the first game.  They had a handful of missed throws/drops that could have resulted in explosive plays.  I'll cite the wheel route to Giesler, as an example.  That was a very well designed play.  Not suggesting the outcome hinged on those plays, but there seemed to be improvement.  Noon is explosive.  Giesler looks like a nice player.  I hope his "noise" is all behind him, now.

Defensively, they were way off compared to the regular season game.  I'm guessing the two key injuries to the front seven played a part.  The more healthy offensive line for CCH really helped, too.  I also understand the sentiment that maybe Coach E was intentionally vanilla in game 1, but, there were a lot of vanilla plays last night that resulted in gashes.

Credit to CCH for coming out of the gate hot and setting the tone on the line of scrimmage.  Reid Hummel was dynamic and it was nice to see big plays from Mason and Wilson in the passing game.  Agee is really something.  The Colonels were very physical in the trenches.

I'm sure the birds will circle the wagons in the offseason.  For the Colonels, keep it going!  As far as this rivalry goes, historically, there's still a big score to be settled.  I realize that each year is a new year and each team is a new team.  My hope is the staff stays on the kids in Park Hills, reminding them of what this rivalry looked like for much of the 20 year period prior to 2016.   But, that's for the offseason.

Was it just me or did it look the Highlands player who recovered the fumble was on his knees at the 1 yard line and jumped into the end zone for the touchdown?

Yes, it sure looked that way.  The 2 pt conversion was also very close.

…and, the left guard clearly jumped on H’s key 4th down conversion on their last drive.  The blocked FG rendered it academic.

Is what it is.  We have human beings officiating and we have a shortage.  Frankly, just glad we have zebras on the field.

  9. Looking at this year's schedule, I appreciate more and more the St. Henry program.  Good on them for staying on CCH's schedule.  I expect the Dixie game to be a very tough challenge early.  Congratulations to Coach B for putting together another outstanding schedule.  Quite frankly, the collective competition on the schedule is far better than what CCH would see with a traditional, NKY laden schedule.  CCH may not get out of the 9th this year, but it sure as heck won't be because they weren't tested in the regular season.

As far as any messages or statements being delivered by the other coaches in NKY - so what, its their right to run their program as they see fit.  There are some fine basketball coaches/leaders of young men in NKY.  I'll roll with the dude in Park Hills - he's pretty freaking good.
