  1. It was a tweet by a reporter attempting to confirm what he had heard. I haven’t seen anything from JCPS either.

    You can say my name.

I was the one who was tipped off.

    Twitter

    What I have learned:

    1) This is in effect for both Jefferson and Oldham County public schools (per coaches in both counties)

    2) Some schools/programs have yet to get the memo OR do not care about said memo.

  2. They are replacing turf with grass? Or do you mean replacing grass with turf?

Turf is going down in the new stadium.

    Yup. Typed it in wrong.

Don't think I can edit my mistake.

    Meade never had turf.

Meade is finally getting turf for first time.

It also looks like soccer will be moving on campus, judging by the lines on the football field.

I like Meade's old grass soccer complex myself. Has comes a looooooong way from when I played away games there in the late 1990s.

  3. We are worried about kids standing next to each other on the sidelines, but fine with the contact of the 22 on the field? Seems like the locker room, play, practice, and even busing would be more of a problem.

I've said before that contact, locker rooms and buses would be issues for football that other sports don't have to get passed.

But slicing down the number of rostered players helps with the social distancing part of buses/ locker rooms.

  4. Is it possible the KHSAA would make max number of players on a football roster? I just think about some schools and players on the sideline are standing right next to each other, because that's what you do on the sideline. But with our current state of social norms, would it be possible the KHSAA would set a rule for this coming year that only lets say 50 players per team on Fridays?

    That's one solution.

And who really plays more than 50 guys, anyway?

    Other sports have roster limits.

Already assuming cheerleaders and marching band and dance team are out of the mix.

  5. The NFHS oversees the KHSAA like the NCAA oversees the SEC.

Suffice it to say, the NFHS sees no immediate need for a high school shot clock.

    Personally, I'm with them.

In Kentucky, we can't even get on-field playclocks for football and there are far less fields/games to worry about using them.

Plus, we gonna do it for JV and freshmen, too?

    From the link:

A proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock as well as a proposal to allow a shot clock by state adoption were not approved.

“Information was given to the Basketball Rules Committee that shared the votes in individual states on how coaches and officials voted in support of or non-support of the shot clock rule,” said Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Basketball Rules Committee. “The conversation among the committee members explored the pros and cons of enacting the proposal as a rule for all states and likewise for state adoption. The committee will continue to explore the shot clock issue.”

  7. Not sure how you figure Trinity had a not so great start. They lost to Male by 3 in 2 ots, and a loss on the road in Indy. They were 5-1 going into that game.

Regardless, good luck to John Hardin and their new coach in 2020. I hope those guys have a great season.

I meant the 2014 and 2018 Trinity teams.

    Sub .500 starts.

    Pretty decent postseason runs.

  8. We could be. But in my experience as long as our kids are working hard, developing team concepts, learning to be mentally tough then in the end we will be playing our best. JH had been dominant for so long in the area that now many like to see them/us struggle. That’s the nature of sports. As for success being attributed to a “weak” district I really couldn’t say. I do know Moore has hired a very good football coach with a school ready to give Billy tremendous support. Moore I think has won the district the last couple seasons. I want to add in that the coaching at Spencer county is excellent and they play very good football. With that being said I guess I will publicly defend our district. Of course it’s just my opinion. Good coaches and many good players. Being the new head coach at John I must say I don’t know all the hurdles to overcome but 31 years of coaching in most possible environments has given me some insight into things. One of those being that finishing strong at the end helps build on the next season. We were 2-4 at Bullit East and played in the state championship. We were 2 and something at Franklin Simpson in 2017 and won the state championship. We were 0-4 last season and lost in the Regional Championship. Injuries caught up with us vs a tremendous North Hopkins team. My point is this. We will improve and grow at JH. Those first 5 won’t mean a hill of beans down the line. And in no way do we plan to be 0-5. But you never know. That’s the beauty of high school football. Love the kids and demand excellence and all else will come together. Just some thoughts.

I don't think it was a slight, coach.

Just about how tough the non-district sked is for a program.

Louisville Central (under Scroggins, playing the Jefferson County 6-A powers) and Louisville Trinity (playing a regional/national schedule) are two programs which had not-so-great starts and still ended year quite nicely.

  9. I assume you typed that bold part backwards, was just kidding, or maybe overall. Since this is was posted in the basketball thread I don't see anyway someone could say that Shelby Co. has been the better school.

Here are the numbers: In the past 10 years since Collins has became a high school

Overall records: Collins 225-101 Shelby Co. 101-192 (only 3 winning seasons)

Head to head: Collins leads the series 3-26 (all 3 wins came in 2 seasons)

    Yup. Meant Collins.

    Can't edit now.

    Someone else already corrected me.

  10. And the Nelson County split came at a time when the county was expecting to grow due to an influx of people to Fort Knox, along with other prevailing growth. None of that ended up happening, which meant they split a medium/large school that struggled at times to compete into two medium sized schools that haven't been very competitive at all, at least in boys basketball and football.

    Agreed.

Meade, which also has some ties to Knox, has done everything in its power to stay as one school.

Yet Nelson (which already had two options for potential students to bolt to) split.

And some in this case chose a different district than do the "stay or go" with NC/TN.

  11. That used to be the order of the day, that schools that split off were not really great while the school they split from was mostly fine, at least in the initial stages. In basketball, I'd say that's mostly still the case, although I don't agree Shelby has been better. In football, well, that's another matter for a lot of these.

I'd judge in the last 25 years that there have been eight applicable cases, where one school was carved out of pieces of other schools with the existing schools still there to compare to. Great Crossing is too early to make a true judgment on, as is Frederick Douglass (Henry Clay has been competitive, but we're still within the part where we may not have seen full extent yet). So that leaves six schools: Thomas Nelson (took from Bardstown and Nelson County), Collins (split from Shelby County), South Warren (took majority from Greenwood but some from Warren Central), Cooper (took from Boone, Ryle, and Conner, but mostly Conner), North Oldham (took from Oldham County and South Oldham), and John Hardin (took from Central Hardin, North Hardin, and Fort Knox). Of that entire group, John Hardin had by far the biggest impact on who they were carved from. John Hardin has five region titles since opening while North Hardin has only the one once you got past the initial easing in - they'd won three in a row right before and immediately after John Hardin opened. Collins has been a power, and has won two region titles while Shelby County has none since the split. Cooper has a single region title - Conner wasn't exactly a power before and Boone County has matched that. The rest are probably limiting what the schools they were carved from can do (North Oldham hasn't won a title but they're taking some kids, Greenwood has definitely been hurt by South, but South has done nothing).

I think Thomas Nelson probably doesn't help the matter for Nelson County, but as Nate said, it wasn't exactly a job to flock to in the first place.

Thomas Nelson pulled from Nelson County (public).

Bardstown is Independent. Don't think Bardstown lost much to Thomas Nelson.

And John Hardin pulled from North Hardin and Central Hardin.

Current Attorney General Daniel Cameron was at Central Hardin before going to John.

  12. Since Shelby County has split, Collins has had more success in boys basketball.

    Yup. Mis-typed.

    Meant Collins.

Collins boys hoops and girls CC/track has been solid.

On the flip side, Central Hardin's top achievements (baseball state title, girls bowling state title, girls golf state title, runner-up finish in girls bowling, final four in football, final four in softball, elite 8s in soccer) came AFTER John Hardin opened.

The newer school can have more success (see Collins over Shelby).

The former school can still shine (see Central Hardin vs. John Hardin).

  13. Tough job since Thomas Nelson opened they take a lot of kids who otherwise would go to Nelson County.

    That works both ways.

Nelson boys were never a 5th Region power, even before the split. They were always chasing Bardstown, both schools coming from the 17th, and the 20th District champ (Adair in 2000s, Taylor rise in 2010s).

However, Collins split off from Shelby and you could argue Shelby has been the better school.

Same for South Warren splitting from Warren Central/Greenwood.

  14. I wouldn’t be surprised if the KHSAA doesn’t move all Fall and Winter sports to Spring of 2021 along with Spring sports and tell the Schools to hash it out. Talk about making a student athlete choose between sports. And a logistic nightmare!

    I'd be floored.

    *Not enough athletes.

    *Not enough trainers.

*Not enough coaches (especially those who do multiple sports)

*Not enough fields (lacrosse, football, track, field hockey, soccer all use same place at many schools).

    *Not enough refs.

But sure, let's put the square peg in the round hole.

Some of these sports don't draw or make squat.

No way KHSAA would endear that burden when already strapped for cash and on life support.

  15. It's not even been three months.

And based on some of these responses, it's clear some people don't care how others will be affected as long as they "get mine"

It's clear there is no way this generation could make it through the 1918 Spanish Flu or the Great Depression.

My mom is a frontline nurse (who could bring it home to my dad)

I'm a type-I asthmatic diabetic (who has been cleared to do my job for 2-plus years, but there is ZERO way to do it remotely).

I'm not cool with getting thrown to the wayside because people are getting stir crazy. It's sad we think this is bad and we "must have changes now" when it could be far worse.

Is our patience really that thin?

Are we really that weak mentally?

  16. I never even considered the water issue. Even if you went with disposable cups instead of bottles, players would still be all touching the cooler to dispense the water into the cups. Another issue is the risk the athletic trainers would have, as their job requires close contact with individuals. They can't do their jobs from 6 feet away.

On a side note, I wonder if this is what finally kills the post/pre game handshakes?

    And basketball/softball/soccer circle prayers.

Or football postgame huddles by goalposts.

The volleyball spanking/patting after each point

Basketball fist bumps after free throws

Baseball or softball crowd-the-plate celebrations after home runs or winning runs
