  1. 1) Keyron Catlett – Mr. Everything for Christian County – According to our good friend @chrisjung, 3 yard TD run, 40 yard TD catch, 40 yard punt return TD and 2 2-point conversion catches. I realize I had him here last week, but no one put up those kinds of stats this week and he’s a heck of a player!

88 nice job as always. Minor note. Catlett actually threw on those 2 2-point conversions. He really can do it all.

  2. Neither team adjusted to the weather early as it was a downpour most of 3 quarters. Owensboro took over at the Christian Co. 20 yard line after the Colonels started with a 3 and out and the snap rolled to the punter. An off sides penalty and 15 yards later the Red Devils lead 6 to nothing to start the game. It stayed this way for awhile before County put a drive together later in 1st quarter to tie the game. The OHS ground attack grounded it out over the next 2 quarters carrying most of the momentum. They grabbed their 3rd and final score of regulation on the 1st play of the 4th quarter to push the lead to 18-6. The Colonels offense got it going when it had to in crunch time on the shoulders of Keyron Catlett who had a receiving TD and two rushing TDs (including an 80 yard scamper that tied the game). Both teams had opportunities to finish the game in regulation but turnovers and penalties derailed those plans. I believe Both teams finished with 3 turnovers. Owensboro had several more opportunities to score but couldn't convert. The two teams exchanged field goals in the 1st over time. The Colonels connected first in the 2nd overtime with another field goal but Landon Board rushed in from 10 yards out on the first play of OHS' possession and it was in the books.

    Closing Thoughts:

-This was a great game by two very good teams in 5A.

-Owensboro's bye week was very beneficial to them as they have gotten back to more of their ground option attack. Which started the weeks prior to the break.

-OHS is much improved since their game against OCHS.

-Christian Co. missed their leading rusher & scorer in this game (Trequan Haskins-Taylor). Although, Keyron Catlett was effective running the ball it limited his receiving touches.

-Both teams have tons of heart and fight in them.

    -5A Region 1 is loaded.

  3. These seem pretty accurate but I agree with Hellcats that past years seem to affect the rankings. On this list this year I have only seen John Hardin, Hopkinsville, Franklin Simpson and South Warren. Of those four I think Franklin Simpson is the best followed by Hopkinsville and a tie between John Hardin/S. Warren. Hopkinsville can be dangerous but their district is awful and that hurts moving on because they aren't battle tested. Lost only close contest of the year so far.

Looking at records of the rest and who they have played, it appears Spencer Co. and Rockcastle Co. are also solid football teams.

I think the favorite still remains Johnson Central at the end of the day.

  4. County had 6 penalties and Hoptown had 4. For the most part the officials just let the kids play and let them decide the game. There were missed calls on both sides. The called back TD for HHS was actually correct. I was confused during the game but after reviewing the film HHS had two receivers on the LOS on the right and one on the left. However, the flag should have been thrown at the snap. Hats off to Hoptown as they gave County fits up front keeping the O Line confused all night. Many have dissed the Colonels defense since Friday as well but I actually thought they looked much improved. They gave up a few big plays where they missed tackles on Johnson (He makes a lot of people miss) but they kept the Tigers out of the end zone for the most part and forced them into FGs. No one else has been able to do that to the Tigers this year. I do not see the Tigers having a close game the rest of the season. My hope is they can stay focused and continue to improve even though the competition won't be much. If they can do that they have a really good chance to make a run at that Region against South Warren/Franklin Simpson.

  5. I agree with you that they really aren't battle tested. The thing I like least about Franklin is that they are SO one-dimentional. Basically all Hoptown has to do is sit on the run. Yes, they can have some success with that, but will it be enough? Hopkinsville will never be out of the game because of their offense. In order for Franklin to win IMO, they have to control clock the whole game and when they are in the red zone, they have to make it count and score every time as I'm not sold on their D being able to hold Hopkinsville down. But they may not beat Central, so there you go!

I guess I should have prefaced those comments by saying I know very little about Franklin-Simpson, simply looked at scores. By what you say though they are strictly a running team. Hopkinsville's weakest part of their team is probably in the trenches. They try and combat that on defense by playing fast and bringing lots of pressure; slowing it down and trying to control possession would probably be in FS best interest.

Hopkinsville is capable of beating both those teams (and I hope they do), I guess am just not as high on them as a lot of other people. Great discussion and it will interesting to see how it plays out.

  6. Map, who do you think trips them up in the second round? They wouldn't play South Warren until the 3rd round.

Franklin Simpson. Not because I think that they are that much better than HHS or WC but because that would mean the tigers would have to win tough/physical games in back to back weeks. Do you think they would be able to do that?

If not that week. They definitely do not get past the 3rd Weekend...

  7. Conventional wisdom says it has too right? But 2 teams show up and only 1 will leave successfully. The Warren Central game will be really interesting. Some think Central will win.

I saw Central really early in the year but haven't seen them since then. You have to believe that district prepares you better for a close game though? It should be interesting. Hopkinsville has tons of athletes but if Warren Central can slow them down they have a good chance to win.

I believe Hopkinsville wins this one at home but I think that is the only win they get.

  8. I just don't see owensboro getting past graves county..graves gave them all they wanted and could handle two weeks ago..i just think graves will beat greenwood and set up a showdown at rash with owensboro..many people will disagree with me and I respect that, but look at what graves did this time last year, upset warren central, beat bowling green, then John hardin, and only lost by 7 in the championship to Pulaski on a hell of a rainy night..all I will say is, never, ever, underestimate the eagles!!..imo

Graves Co. is very well coached and had a great game plan that they executed to perfection in the 1st game. IF they play again there is two great big differences that could effect this game.

#1 The game being at Rash means the long bus ride goes the opposite direction and visiting a very tough place to play.

#2 Tavian Board. He is one of the best players I have seen all year. An absolute monster on defense that makes a huge difference for the Devils.

On to more pressing matters, Greenwood and Graves should be an excellent game. What is Dakota Dixon's status for this week? Heard he was hurt during the Calloway game. Any truth to that?

  9. If BG is to win 5A this year, they will have to beat #5, #4, #3, and #2 in that order to earn the championship. If they do that, no one can say they didn't earn it!

Coming out of the West and having enough left in the tank for the championship is a tough task. Graves Co. just seemed to run out of gas at the end last year. If BG does that they will have definitely earned it.

  10. Hey Map! I didn't realize Kenner didn't play against BG. I couldn't make it to that game and guess I just assumed he did play. How do you see the rematch playing out in Week 2 of the playoffs at BG?

I feel as though both teams have improved. Christian Co probably has more but simply because they had further to go. I feel as though it will be a much better game. Personally I feel as though Christian matches up with BG better than they do with Owensboro.

The Colonels just have to prove they can show up for big games and play well. So far they've been unable to do that this season. It is tough to get a win at BG any time but CCHS usually gives BG a good game in playoffs. Right now I still think BG is better team and would win but definitely not a blowout like earlier this year.
