  1. Any individual players really standout?

Honestly Jumper the entire jumper passing game seems to be in sync, they're athletic and deep. The struggles last year with youth and the inability to finish are paying off now with gritty experienced sophomores and juniors.

If I absolutely had to name drop Id say Isaiah Cornett, Jordan Doan, Josh Cornett, Tristan Purcell, Chase Madden, Logan Gadberry and obviously Hatcher all looked very very good. The guys mentioned scored several times and made plays on both sides of the ball. The offense COULD be reminiscent of the 2010 offense that was very balanced.

  2. Adair is a well coached team. Kids know what they are doing and play accordingly. Somerset has some very nice skill players with speed. I also liked their moxie, tough kids.

Don't misunderstand, looks like I was downing Adair and that wasn't the intention, I just thought CAL looked like they were on another level offensively at the 7v7. They were surgical. The CAL Somerset game was a fun one to watch!

  3. All I know is Mayfields blocking was much in every game except that one. Jackson was gang tackled all game. There were very few solo tackles on him.

Question I have to ask? The way Mayfield beat Hazard in 2010 do you think they were that much better than Hazard? Teams do hang there heads and just about give up.

I agree with you here. That hazard team was physical as hell. The game between Somerset and Hazard earlier that season was one of the hardest hitting games I've ever seen.

Hazards physicality was the difference, a healthy jackson would've helped but still believe Hazard wins that year.

  4. Truly opinion but I think Fuller and Beal were a tough out for anyone in the playoffs that year. The Fuller kid had one of the fastest releases I've ever seen, completely negated Somersets d line strength that year.

  5. Interesting. I would be surprised if Mayfield 2014 beat DeSales 2014. Last year's Mayfield team was an over achiever and I think DeSales talent would have caught up with the over achieving group.

2011 ... trust me, that game would not have been close. Mayfield would have beaten Holy Cross by a bunch. The thing that makes 2011 a little unusual is Mayfield lost in the 1A title game but Jackson and several other key players were hurt prior to that title game. I am basing my opinion on a healthy Mayfield team versus a healthy Holy Cross team.

I wouldn't bank on that. Somerset had beaten the same Hazard (14-0 at Hazard) team that beat Mayfield in the championship. Hazard was MUCH more physical than Mayfield in that game. Mayfield had no answer for BJ Combs and the Jones kid in the backfield for Hazard. The reason I draw to the Somerset v Holy Cross game to compare, Somerset had a terrific defense and couldn't do anything with Holy Cross. I don't think that Mayfield could've faired much better. That is the only year I could argue against them winning the title.

  6. No. This is a High School All-2000s list. You don't take off a WR who got Mr. Football for someone most of us don't even know. All that stuff you say may very well be exactly right but I don't think his efforts generated 3 straight State Championships.

A history lesson for you. Fant is a great player, John was a stud, the link is from 2007 right after John won the Gatorade POY award for Kentucky.

  7. As far as Nacarius Fant (over John Cole) I agree with. Cole was special but consider how many blowouts BG had in their 44-0 streak. In at least 20+ games, Fant was done for the night after 1st series of 2nd half. I know I am BG bias but if Fantasy would have completed every game he would have shattered many records.

An argument that two homers can have I suppose! Somerset had several blowouts in the four years that Cole was a starter. In Jon's statistical "best" year (2006) I counted 10. To play devils advocate during the 44 game streak BG played at least 4 more games than Somerset, probably more like 6-7, considering they made the finals giving Fant more opportunity to rack up stats.

  8. It be hard to go against Fant. 4 year starter with multiple championship where he was a big clog in the wheel. Made so many clutch catches for his team. His miracle play at John Hardin and the 2 point conversion for the win on a out route with the db playing outside leverage was special.

Don't misunderstand. Fant was a HECK of a player... Cole still owns a couple records though, hard to argue the stats (say what you want about level of competition but he was drawing doubles and shaded coverage his whole career just like Fant, and he was also a four year starter)

I think there is at least an argument to put Cole in with the WR group. Arguably one of the best receivers in state history not just the 2000's. Above Fant in every category receiving wise. Fant is more recent memory though, guess that helps.

  9. Cole over Fant at receiver at this point I would think. Cole was legit. Many people don't know this but he was dangerously close to playing with Andrew Luck at Stanford, even had Harbaugh calling his house begging him not to commit to Vandy the day he committed, had he gone out to the west coast he may be playing professionally right now. As it stands a Vandy MBA isn't to bad! Bright kid.

  10. Somerset returns a ton of skill talent and, by all accounts, they've been really working hard in the offseason getting stronger and improving their skill sets. If the offensive line comes along they should be able to put up points on just about anybody they play. Defensively they'll need to continue to improve, they got a lot better last year as the year went on but we all know how that still turned out.

  11. There are a few kids at somerset currently benching 300+ Red Smallwood is a 350 bencher and 500 squatter, a senior offensive lineman. While those numbers are nothing to scoff at the all time numbers are fairly impressive for a high school player: Tevin and Trey Slaughter were both 700lb squatters, it may sound crazy but it is legitimate. Tevin was also a 400+ bench presser and had a 335 power clean. One of the strongest kids I've ever seen play in person. At the strong man competition at Wester Hills (I believe?) Tevin dead lifted a truck 23 times... Truly a once in a generation player strength wise and the kid could ball as well.
