  1. I sat and watched a dad make an absolute fool of himself at an 8th grade boys' game recently from a Boone Co. middle school, I mean screaming at the refs constantly, and all I could think of was this: not in a million years.

Parents / Fans are the WORST. They say so many things to refs as they run by that they'd never say to another man's face if on the street somewhere. It is unbelievable.

It is a hard job, I am going to continue to work under the assumption they are doing the best they can and are being as fair as they can be, and in the rare instance where one of those two aren't the case (doing their best, or being fair), you cover your mouth as a coach and talk to them when the moment arises.

The behavior of fans / parents is so beyond okay when it comes to the treatment of officials, I can't even believe these people are real.

Majority of them are living their dream thru their kid. I’ve coached all over the country never have I thought a referee wasn’t giving their all. If parents and a lot of coaches would look in the mirror. Coaches make mistakes players miss layups. Everyone including the official are growing and learning. Some officials are better than others some understand the game better. The same can be said about the player , coach , or fan. The game is nothing but a tool to teach life lessons in a fun way. I always tell my players adjust to the officiating as you will have to adjust to your family life or worksite. I think NO official is trying to be the main attraction.

  2. Totally agree, I'm not saying the coach is all the problem, but there has to be a change after this season.

Then where is the problem? I’ve watched about 4 games a year at Ryle over the last 4 years. He may know the game of basketball he doesn’t relate with the kids. He seems to be trying to fit round pegs in square holes. Ryle will not win with the current coaching staff. He’s bigger than the team.

  3. All possible reasons, but definitely not the only possibilities. Culture has to come into the equation at some point. Cooper Scherr, Bryce Ashley, Jackson Saladin, Trayshawn Cody, Zach Rice, Anthony Caggiano, Gage Ashcraft, Braden Locke. Just a quick list of players listed chronologically that would have been probable starters. Hard to imagine that all of these kids have as you said "lack of heart, egos, or overzealous parents". Might want to research a little before you question the integrity and character of kids and parents when a pattern of behavior has unequivocally been established.

Ryle has the same problem Dixie has someone’s EGO is bigger than the team. Kids don’t play hard for EGOTISTICAL people. It’s the kids team not the coaches. Ryle coach just had a meeting with the kids and parents and cried the kids won’t listen to me that’s why we lose. People will follow great leaders they can’t coach as a king or by intimidation. Conner had the problem 2 years ago.

  4. Player firepower. I think Dixie can shorten the deficit, but Ryle is going to win 10 out of 10 times.

They would win 10 of 10. Ryle have some really nice players. Dixie style is no conducive to the modern day game of basketball. The days up just setting up and running plays is a bygone way of coaching. Coaches need to be teaching ways to react to what the defense gives you instead of plays.

  5. So given your opinions then, you must support the idea of classification in basketball since a school of Bellevue's size should certainly never compete with a school of Ryle's size? Asking for a friend . . .

I support classification Ohio basketball is better imo. KHSAA should get rid of the private schools or classify. It’s all about money so I don’t see it happening. I hope the All “A” catches on at all levels and makes the KHSAA a mute organization. Just my feelings.

  6. Cov Cath is going to be near the top if for nothing else their depth. Cov Cath struggles with outside shooting but they are patient and keep working for layups. Beechwood is scrappy and have some good shooters who can get hot at anytime and beat anyone. Beechwood I feel will struggle when the outside shooting struggles. Cooper has the depth defensively and can take anyone out their game but struggle shooting like Cov Cath does. If Newport and Lloyd can stay out of foul trouble they can beat anyone but lack in depth also. The list is good. I’ve seen all the teams and I’d agree with what you have put together.

  7. Its unthinkable that Ryle with 1800 kids should lose to a school of Bellevue's size (that isn't an "athletics" school). Not knocking Bellevue at all, the kids played their tails off, but Ryle should not lose to them.

You are correct. It has nothing to do with if the coach knows the game of basketball but the culture he brings. You have to believe in your kids before they will belief in you. They lack heart and desire at Ryle as a few other big schools who under perform in my eyes. There are many kids walking the halls at Ryle that can hoop that choose not to play. IMO Ryle is under performing.

  8. It was an exciting night of basketball in Alexandria Thursday night, culminated by Ethan Eilerman's 3-point heroics for the Brossart win.

The Brossart Freshmen team pulled a rabbit out of their hat, down 2 with 10 seconds to play and Holmes in possession of the ball, when Mitchell Webster knocked the ball away from a Bulldog who was waiting to be fouled.

Webster scored, sending the game to OT, where the Mustangs went on to win 34-33 behind an 18 point performance from Jacob Leicht.

The JV game came down to the Dogs leading 47-45 with virually no time on the clock and a Mustang at the line shooting 3, none of which connected and the Bulldogs hung on. Brossart Freshman David Govan scored 19 points in that one.

In the varsity game, the Mustangs opened an early game 13-6 lead, only to see that leaad shrink to 13-12 at the quarter stop. We were tied at 26s at the half, and the Bulldogs led 42-38 after three quarters. They led by as many as seven at 52-45 with only two minutes to go in the game when the Mustangs went on an 8-1 run to get the game to OT.

In overtime, Allen Jump was a man possessed on defense, obtaining steals, forcing turnovers and keeping his team alive. Holmes hit what appeared to be the game-winner with just ticks remaining in the game, but Carson Schirmer raced down the floor, found Eilerman in the corner and the rest is history. Brossart and Brad Carr coached teams have a history of beating each other on last second shots.

On the night Brossart Junior Ethan Eilerman scored a career-high 29 points, eclipsing the 500 points mark, and J.D. Schumacher added 15. Mustang football quarterback Tyler MacDonald, no stranger to taking strong hits, stood in and took 3 charges on the night.

Demario Foster (15), Tico Pouncey (14), and Amari Mullins (13) all scored double-figures for the Bulldogs.

The Mustangs take on Campbell County in the Alexandria Crosstown Classic Saturday night at the Campbell County Middle School.

I love reading Mustangs reports. Great job always and very unbiased just the facts.

  9. What kind of a time frame are we looking at ?

I'd say by tournament time. Coach Carr real heroics will take a couple years as he changes the mindset and develops the middle school programs. Holmes team this year struggles in the outside shooting. The Bulldogs lack shooting and depth. I love what Brad Carr gets the maximum of what he is dealt. I would love to have my son play for him.

  10. Lloyd is having a great season from the looks of their record. Great job Juggernauts. Is Lloyd going to have a challenge any time soon? Seems like their NCKC schedule is making their competition level lower than other 9th region schools.

They have a nice squad. Coach is figuring out his rotations. Lloyd is young playing 3 sophomores and 2 juniors 1 senior their future is bright. They a nice a nice group of freshman and middle school group coming.

  11. Why is this? Newport has been fairly successful the last few years... Is it just based on talent alone? I've always felt the coaching is there. Then, I see this post.

Could it just be that CCH was that good?

CCH is that outstanding they have depth. Newport's offense was majorly hampered without McGuire. Newport usually allows Miller to attack and then throw out to McGuire to knock down shots. They also allow Miller to attack and dump to Harding. CCH last nite doubled teamed on Harding and at times had 3 men on him when he got the ball. You play 5 starters of CCH against 5 starters of Newport and newport would win majority of the games. Cov Cath has depth on all NKy teams. They do not have the best 5 players but when Cov Cath goes to the bench they have very little dip in talent. I have watched Cov Cath 3 times this year I feel there is a few better teams than them as far as starting 5. Cov Cath bench is their saving grace. I have seen Newport 3 times this year they changed their game style against Cov Cath partly cause of McGuires absent I assume. The key to beating Cov Cath is to make them shoot outside by sitting in a zone like St. HENRY did and kept the game close till they changed to man. Cov Cath is patient in their offense but they can be beat by a lot of teams this year they don't have that knock down shooter or anyone player that can consistently take over the game as they have had in the past few. Cooper will give them fits as Cooper is disciplined in defense as Cov Cath is in offense. Neither Cov Cath or Cooper puts up tons of points even though they are the 2 better teams I feel either one can be beat by a few teams.

  12. @Mustang, @Hoosiers, @Miller, @Oldercoach

As mentioned in the initial post, the thread isn't about Coach Faust. His career does present a good example to discuss the question posed about what makes a coach great. The earlier posters brought up points I was hoping to hear about what makes someone a great coach and that it is about more than wins and losses.

I also believe the wins and losses are as much if not more a product of the talent on a roster versus how good a coach is. That brings up another angle to add to the discussion. Can an average coach win big if he/she has enough talent?

Good coaches can help pull off

A big win. As a whole you have have to have talent.
