  1. The problem with football and baseball for that matter is almost no one gets it all paid for thru athletics. If you qualify for some academic money or grants then that will help but if not then basketball is a better way to get your school fully paid for. I know when I went in basketball there was only two kids on the team that got a full athletic scholarship. Me and our point guard. The rest got partial and some of the rest got the difference made up thru grants

That makes sense depending on what level you go for. If you're a D1 talent, there are 85 scholarships in football compared to only 13 in basketball. NAIA level is a little tighter with 24 & 11 respectively I think. The preference is obviously basketball at SW and I'm OK with that. Here's to hoping they win the Classic.

  2. I would want nothing to do with that clustermess.

I am not sure the administration and politics at either Bell or Middlesboro is conducive to winning.

Taking the administration and politics out my answer would be "Not top tier, but a highly desirable job. Not nearly as desirable as 5 or 6 years ago".

Bell has definite benefits... you get excellent facilities, a devoted community and a sense of pride from your players, the ability to draw from a talent pool in the area, and booster money. These all make it an alluring job on a different level than most locations.

On the negative side though, Bell's Feeder System has began to slide off. I don't think a mass overhaul is needed, but it definitely will need some considerable time and effort. Numbers are down and the local economy is dwindling a bit. You also have the disadvantage of sharing a District with an ascending Corbin program under Coach Haddix. Corbin will have a five or six year jump start and their Feeder System is rocking and rolling. The other elephant in the room is having Belfry in your Semi-State who's program currently as at the most elite of levels.

I would compare Bell County to the South Carolina University job. You can maintain success and will have quality talent and plenty of support, but the slightest slip will have people thinking how the "old coaches would have done it" and your competition for post-season success simply are at a much higher level than you right now.

This. Bell has absolutely nothing coming up. You need a nice jump start for a good varsity program and I just don't see it coming in the near future. Nice facilities, yes, but you need much more than that. They'll be back eventually, just not soon.

  3. they're paying him to win football games. That's something he does very well. Similar situation as Petrino and Pitino at Louisville. Coaches can be sleazy and still do their job well.

Win football games? Is that all he is paid to do when coaching high school kids?

And, I've never seen Petrino or Pitino headbutt a player like a psycho in the middle of a game. Put a finger in the face, talk about his momma, grab him by the jersey or facemask. But causing harm to yourself and drawing blood is flat out stupid...even worse, someone getting the whole thing on video and all of us discussing the good or bad.

The headbutt I can deal with. I don't think it's as big of a deal as it was made out to be. I want to make it clear that I do not condone his personal actions off the field. I was simply pointing out that in some cases (dare I say most cases), coaches have that "ego" where they think they can do whatever they want to do, even outside of the sport. There are some good, but there are a lot of bad as well. I don't think we should cast stones at a guy in Georgia when we have two at the same school in our own state at Louisville. As far as Pitino and Petrino never headbutting a player...Just because there is no video on social media, doesn't mean it never happened.

  4. I like the headbutt. Whatever gets the team going. Most coaches use techniques that at least one person won't like. Either they're "too hard" or "too soft." Folks have to pick their poison. They're not paying him to be faithful to his wife, they're paying him to win football games. That's something he does very well. Similar situation as Petrino and Pitino at Louisville. Coaches can be sleazy and still do their job well.

  5. Decent don't cut it at Bell

The problem is that "decent" describes the talent Bell has coming up. I don't see Bell being a player in the next few years. Nice new facilities, but whoever comes in has their work cut out for them.

  6. Don't know if it's true or not, Wilcat18's comments seemed to indicate that it might be, but this I do know...a LOT of people who play the Pulaski teams sure do think a lot of their kids are held back and are a little older than most teams they play, true or not. Not casting aspersions, I have no kids playing, just stating an observation.

All players at Northern Pulaski abide by the age restrictions within the rules of KHSAA and the KMSFA. Anyone that tells you otherwise has lied to you.

Whatever is going on in Pulaski seems to be working as the high school Maroons are playing in their 3rd state finals game in 3 years this weekend.

  7. Except PUBLIC schools allow out-of-district enrollment, too.

LaRue County's last D-I boys' basketball player lived in Hart County.

Central Hardin girls' hoops all-time leading rebounder lived in Meade County.

Elizabethtown girls' basketball team has had players from New Haven (Nelson County) and Hodgenville (LaRue County).

LaRue, Central Hardin and Elizabethtown are PUBLIC, by the way.

I guess we're just not as up-to-date on our recruiting tactics as the other schools you mentioned. You go to school in the district where your address falls where I come from.

You can ask 3 players on the same Louisville middle school team where they're going to high school and you'll have 3 different answers. That's crazy to me.

  8. Barring a win against North Laurel this week, I think Pulaski WANTS Highlands. They have given PC their share of beatings in the past. The Maroons will embrace that opportunity with authority if they're fortunate enough to meet them next week. It will be a statement game for Coach Hines and company. Knowing most of them, they'll have a chip on their shoulder, no doubt. It will be personal.

  9. If it is who I think it is then I am thinking he chose football didn't he? I hope he does get some time with the high school teams at BGHS. True dual talent in both sports.

Yes, you are thinking correctly. No, he chose the basketball route but was genuinely torn. Very good athlete and well deserving of both opportunities in Kentucky football and BG varsity basketball.

  10. Boyle County hasn't either. Nobody told those boys they couldn't play both. They just didn't get preferential treatment because of their situation and THAT is the issue and that isn't spin.

I understand the Boyle situation much better now and it makes sense. The BG situation still makes very little sense to me. Those guys did tell the kid to choose and only play one. That's the only thing I disagree with.

  11. I would assume that most basketball coaches would require late arrivals to the season have some type of make-up. We do that for football players who play in extended baseball seasons with all-star festivities as well. It's not severe, but just to make-up where you missed in practice. Not punishment, just to be fair to their teammates and to keep conditioning a focus. We've never told a kid they couldn't play because of an extended season in another sport.

  12. Gotcha. I assume the "Kentucky football team" is some sort of all-star team?

Seems short-sighted by the basketball coach. If I were the varsity coach I'd make sure the middle school coach put the kid on the team. I'm not having my future varsity roster determined by a JR high coach who is inflexible.

Yes, it's essentially labeled as the top 35 players in the state. In actuality, it's missing a few of the top because of basketball or injuries.

I try to be as open-minded as possible on this issue. To the high school basketball coach's credit, the kid in question will probably get varsity reps this season as an 8th grader. However, I still don't see the reason for them limiting him from varsity because of this opportunity.

  13. I missed that. Are you saying the middle school coaches are making a kid choose?

I'm unsure if middle school or high school basketball coaches were involved with those restrictions. But yes, from what I understand, basketball coaches basically said no basketball if you participate with the Kentucky football team. Kid was torn on what to do. Making that decision as a 14 year old is tough when you want to excel at both. I'm sure opinions differ, but it should not be a decision at this age in my opinion. Both should be an option.

  14. I'm ok with some extra conditioning, but you don't relay it as "punishment." Even some game suspensions to start them out when they come back to let them catch up in practices. I think the basketball vs. football coaching battle is ridiculous, especially at this age. I love my school, but if the administration didn't give my kids the best opportunities possible in whatever athletic endeavors they wanted to pursue, I'd be finding another school. They shouldn't have to basically be forced to choose between two sports at this age.
