I've seen a playoff game in Louisville lost at the old Fairgrounds Stadium when a field goal hit the upright and bounced out. And yes it was after the college posts were narrowed. Since we love to compare KY to other states Florida rotates their championships to various college stadiums and they all use temporary goal posts.

Yeah, I remember that game at the Fairgrounds. The kicker was crushed. His kick would have tied the game with the h/s width. The boy's coach described it as one of his own absolutely worst moments as a coach; that's how bad he felt for the kid, and he said this years after.

I think the poll is still out on the BG Purples. In my opinion, Purples lost a unit of skill players that probably were nationally ranked. With that said, 2013 is history. Ready for this group to make their mark. X and McCallie will be tough. May be a little bias but I say Purples go 9 and 1 and will get the fourpeat.
McCallie had a tough 2013 record of 4-8 but against the best in Tennesse (Ensworth, Siegel, Brentwood Acad, Montgomery Bell, etc.) and of course Bowling Green. But per MaxPreps they wound up 711 in US, which is not bad given those numbers. Their rugged scheduling is doubtless appreciated. So the BG-McC game should be a good one. I hope BG is not playing that dreadful team Blackman (TN) again. From the news reports, they did not exactly sound like sportsmen.

Wow! That is a huge roster. With that many kids, hopefully the coaches can develop these boys into State Champions. Could this be the year for the Pioneers?

I cannot follow munoz's observation because certain references are unclear. Here's a quote in which I bracket my questions: "No one is afraid of Louisville 6A schools. Its 2 schools, Trinity and St. X [meaning that X and T are the Louisville 6A schools nobody is afraid of?]. NKY 6A schools can compete with all the other 6A schools in the state [every 6A school in the state?]. But then again no one in the state competes with them [the NKy 6A schools?] consistently so what is the beef [the beef about not traveling to Louisville for playoff games?]. They [NKy 6A schools?] will be matched up with somebody." Sorry, not trying to be offensive, maybe the problem is with me. I think this is an important point.

I would love to see Simon Kenton go with an all male student population with 2200 males in the building. Then we would have a more level playing field. Could you imagine the combined rosters of Dixie and SK on a single squad? That would be competitive with the Louisville schools.

"Some", yes. "Many", no. I don't see much upside to teams like Harrison County, Grant County, Dayton, Bellevue, Ludlow, Lloyd, or Brossart matching up against Highlands or Cov Cath with any kind of regularity. You need to play the best to beat the best, and beat the best to be the best....but there are some teams that need to learn how to play the decent to beat the decent, and beat the decent to be the decent. Getting stomped isn't much benefit to a lot of the teams around NKY.
Highlands usually plays a very challenging and sometimes better team or two each year, going by their KHSAA schedules 2006-2013: Cincinnati St. X, Elder, Colerain; Columbus, OH St. Francis de Sales; Louisville St. X; Scott County; Ryle. Going by some of the scores, like 35+ pt losses to de Sales, Lou St. X, and (?) Colerain, and rugged battles with the likes of Elder, I'd say Dale Mueller wanted to be playing up to learn strengths & weaknesses. Highlands has also been playing a pre-season exhibition game with Trinity since 2010 and it's at game speed. If ones objects, "Well, Highlands can do that, they are strong enough," I would answer, "But how did Highlands become Highlands?"
I also think of 3A Louisville Central. Mention of that school makes us think "contender," but until Ty Scroggins came along in 2007, they could not get over the hump. One of the first thing Scroggins did was resume Central's historic series with Lou St. X, in which X has won every game (some very close), plus drop weaker foes & toughen up the schedule with other quality 6A and 5A opponents.
Citing only 2 examples of playing up doesn't make for a slam-dunk claim but these are an example of a perennial challenger that stayed tough by playing tough & another that played tougher to become a perennial challenger.
I'd like to hear some examples of teams that need to play "decent" to become "decent." I think that would be instructive and interesting. I wonder if coaching is a factor too.

I mean, it's getting kind of late, isn't it? What schools have published theirs?

How much does the quality of head coaching and assistant coaching affect a team's performance? Can decent talent with great coaching compete against great talent with mediocre coaching? Re the latter, I am actually thinking of a SW Ohio h/s, not any Kentucky teams.
Also, how much does strength of schedule develop a team during the season? Think of 2013 Scott County, a team & school I like very much. But SC had 12 blowout wins against very weak teams before facing good teams in the last 3 games. Yet I feel that SC could have beaten anybody in Kentucky, including Bowling Green (no disrespect) and some of teams on Trinity's schedule like Ensworth, Colerain, Carmel, and Indy Cathedral, all of whom had excellent years.
But then Cincinnati St. X, with a great coach (Specht) and great talent, plays one of the three toughest schedules in the country and is lucky to break .500.
How much SoS is too much SoS? I think Trinity overdoes it too & maybe should play more KY teams. But that's me.

Per this article, Bishop Gorman's 2014 schedule is California-heavy and no mention of Trinity.

Did you hear the man keep mentioning that word "junior" and "soph." The 2013 JVs were 8-0 against Indy Carmel, Indy Lawrence Central, Cincy Colerain, Indy Cathedral, Louisville St. X, Male, Central, & Cincy Moeller. The Frosh lost to Moeller & beat Carmel, Lawrence Central, Colerain, PRP, Cathedral, St. X, Male, & Central. Both squads are loaded.
Plus Frosh QB Larry Harper III played for the East squad in the Jan. 4, 2014 elite Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl San Antonio (a prelim to the Army All-America Bowl). He played QB and RB for much of the game, the East winning by a point in OT.

I believe Elizabethtown won their football championship in the fall of 69' and won their baseball championship in the spring of 70'
To answer my own question, Trinity won football & basketball in 2011-12. I'm going through KHSAA records (which I discover I cannot copy/paste for easier sorting) & think there is no other football/basketball winner in same school year. So Elizabethtown won football/baseball in 1969-70. Surely there must be more 2-out-of-3's.
Behind my question is a second one: which athletes, if any, played on at least 2 of the 3 teams if we have a hat-trick winner? Or at least which athletes would have played on both squads in a 2-out-of-3 situation?
Re Trinity, James Quick played both football & basketball in 2011-12, as well as setting the state 200 meter dash record.

St X sure did have an Olympian in basketball: Mike Silliman. A gold-medalist and team captain of the 1968 US team.

Based on stats I would say this is the main 5:
G Ivory
G Stafford
G Ramser
F Owens
C Spaulding
Ramser and Stafford the 3 pt guns, Spaulding and Owens down low and Ivory running the point. Their FT% looks horrid, only ramser and stafford look good (74 and 80%).
The matchup down low looks pretty good. Oboro is junior dominated so that probably gives Ivory an edge running the show out front. I can see how Trinity is so potent, with good post play in Ivory/Spaulding kick it out to Stafford/Ramser/Levitch for 3 bombs - which they seem to shoot awesome at.
Trinity is a sophomore-junior team. Tre Ivory and Craig Owens, 2 vets from that deep 2012 championship team, are the only seniors. They are the leaders, though, & Trinity's key guys. The other main players are juniors but sophs like Kel'Shawn Knight-Goff see action.

Thanks. There's such a strong case to be made. I'll give her a try. I think there are more dynamics going on here. Schools decide whether to stream. I know Highlands does not allow video. That was the only game Scott County could not iHigh in the 2012 football season. I think a number of schools are not exactly warm to the idea. I just don't get it.

Spalding's numbers do not glitter, 4 pts, 9 rebs, until you get to the 5 blocks. In a mid-scoring game that makes a difference, plus Craig Owens, not the biggest guy out there, knows how to get a rebound & a putback. Before the game we were talking about about how Ramser & Levitch would be non-factors. But those two guys & Michael Stafford were big.

Plus maybe somebody ought to think about the great fans who'd be there for their teams if they weren't ill, disabled, at PTA, and so forth. Scott County is an excellent model of a school that takes care of all of its fans with its iHigh streams & top quality announcers. If the Cardinal fans can get there, they will be there, wherever there is that night. But some just can't make it sometimes ~ or anytime.

George Parker played at Vandy at tackle in the early 60s. I assume he got a scholarship since he started there. Tom Ryan, from Our Lady of Lourdes parish, was all sate. So was Rich Steudle in the very early 60s or perhaps late 50s. Don Cunningham started at nose guard for UL and made all-Missouri Valley Conference, I think. An odd thing: he was also a punter. He graduated from T in 1965. Yes, Roger Gruneisen had four different head coaches his 4 years at Trinity. The class of Hennessey and Rittle won T's first state championship in '68. There were many other top-notch players on that team who had played a lot as sophomores. Tom Domhoff went to UK but IMO never blossomed. T had a very good player right after Tom in QB Dennis Scully who led the team to a big win at Steubenville, Ohio. This was the beginning of T being good almost every year.
Rich Steudle starred at Trinity in the early 60s, received a scholarship to Notre Dame, but injuries ended his career. George Parker, '63, did indeed play at Vandy, on scholarship all four years, but received well over 20 offers from such schools as Alabama, Oklahoma, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and other bigs. He chose Vandy because his dad, "Judge" Parker, had quarterbacked there & wanted George to get an excellent education in his major of engineering. Why not Notre Dame, which supports its science & engineering majors as well as Vandy? George had already interviewed with Ara Parseghian at Northwestern (the year before he took over at ND) & it was bone-cracking cold that day. The experience made George think very warmly of the SEC & his Dad's preferences.
If you want to talk about great Trinity players, you are making a big mistake by starting so late in the 1960s. Trinity has always had great players but until Coach Kennedy arrived in the mid-60s, that special head coaching just wasn't there. A number of guys in the early days, imo, were put in the wrong position, the D and O was pretty basic despite excellent talent, and the training was at times daffy (during one period, isometrics was the preferred strength builder ... honest). But you can take guys like Norm Oberst, Bob Lindsay, Mike Fitzgerald, Mike Cardwell, John Scott, Bruce Cassidy, Mark Bartlett, Bill Hill, Tommy Sipes, George Parker, & a host of others & they'd beat out a lot of the guys mentioned here. The Brohms, Quick & the Super Team, & other incredible later guys are part of a long tradition that goes back to year one.

Your irony rocks but the Trinity-Male series has indeed been a fascinating one for both schools.
After their first 11 games with Male (1957-67), Trinity sported a gaudy 0-10-1 record against the Dawgs. After the next 11 games (1968-85), the Rocks had evened the series at 10-10-2. From 1986 thru 2013, the Rocks usually had the edge & now lead the series 20-14-2.
I really think Male's good days are back to stay, thanks to Coach Wolf and staff. The kids have played hard for him & he almost pulled it off last year. A lot of guys may be making the choice to go to Male now than before. It would be a shame if Trinity and Male, and Trinity and Manual, did not keep their series going.
