Bobby Knight, Calipari, Coach K, Bill Self, Ben Howland, Tubby, Thad Matta, Vivian Stringer & Pat Summit are a few coaches who are known to yell at their players in-game. In the middle of a game, it can often times be the only way to communicate to your players; especially young, green players who need to be mentally tough. The problem with girls basketball, in my coaching experience, is often times girls are TOO pampered; they lack that hard nosed "edginess". That being said, comparing Nell to the above coaches is egregious at best. My beloved John Wooden yelled at his players... However he believed in private discipline. For Nell to do this to a player publicly can definitely rub the athlete the wrong way and be counter-productive. Bottom line - I trust Nell knows her players. Any coach worth his salt will know how to treat individual players on their team. Perhaps this athlete is much like me; I got fired up when someone got in my tail.
