I've had a name on my mind since I heard Coach Thompson was hanging it up. Not really wanting to spill the beans on an exact name just yet as I have no way of confirming my suspicion, its just based on things I've heard in the past. Could be very wrong but I believe this will be an internal move.

Agreed on the internal move w this person .  As it should be.

    FWIW,

Looking at Etown and it looks like they are getting hit very hard by graduation as well. Almost all their offensive production and several key playmakers on defense as well.

Belfry, CAL, DeSales, Russell, and Ashland all will be losing the brunt of their production.

On paper, Glasgow & Mercer County look to have the most coming back from teams who were in the hunt in 2020. Bell County should be improved.

E-town does have a very deep and rather talented Sophomore class (to be Juniors)- about 20 or so.   A few of them started (Prather 84 at TE & Durbin 2 at ILB) this year, along with Gregory (6 at OLB).  Several others would have started for many others in 3A, but didn’t this year  due to how deep and talented this years senior class was.  You can’t lose that much talent and not expect to fall back somewhat, especially maybe early on in 21, but “fall back” is all relative.     Well coached.  Talented.  Great facilities.  Great town.  Etown won’t fade off into the night, that’s for sure.

Bardstown will be back in the thick of things next year.  They have to replace their QB- Clark (two best QBs in 3 and top 6-8 Q’s overall in the state were in the same district) along w some others, but Bardstown has a ‘23 talent in TJ Greenwell..that, well, get used to hearing the name.

Greenwell was Bardstown’s leading rusher this year with 844/13 to go along with 243/3 in receiving.

Their 2nd leading rusher was FRESHMAN, Tyleeq Williams, who went for 482/4.

They also return their leading WR in Sophomore, Shannon Tongue.

As well as several linemen.  See Etown? See Bardstown.

Yep.  All from calpreps (friend of mine posted elsewhere) Great stats to look at and compare

Obviously this will all get played out on the field, but defensively - I think these two are dang close- throw the ppg to this point out the window

1st game of the year was close against a 6A Central Hardin program who has put themselves on the map the last 6-8 years (couple region titles in that time, despite the last couple years falling back somewhat)

Beat 6A Meade 36-6 and it was a 36-0 running clock before Meade scored.  Meade ended up putting together a decent year, came out of the gates beating 4A Region Finalist- John Hardin

Won in a shootout against 5A (and, I believe district champ) North Bullitt.

The Union County game was already decided by half. It was 43-6 at half.

The LaRue County game was interesting for a half- LaRue was actually up on E-town 14-12 at half (no turnovers ) and then E-town just exploded. Offensively they remind you of some of the Pitino coached UK teams in hoops when they would be in a tight game and then boom! Go on a run and it’s “Turn off the lights - close the doors.”

Bardstown Pt. 2 was interesting - as it should’ve been   It was a relatively clean game by both. I’m also hear to tell you- Bardstown? In terms of raw team speed? Top to bottom? Best in 3A this year

I think this game will live up to all the hype. Likely two teams that if they play 10 times? They split 5-5 or maybe somebody edges out 6-4.  Should be a dandy

I'm coming to this game and am pretty excited about it!

As a fan who really doesn't know much about these teams other than they are both good enough to compete for the championship, what is(are) the key(s) to this game?

As cliche as it sounds? Blocking, Tackling, Turnover battle, Field position/kicking game.

The more of those you win? 🏆

field position/kicking game might be the two most underrated aspects of any game played these days (and, how I’m talking about them I’m not so sure it isn’t just ONE aspect)

Flipping the field when you have to punt? Making people start from the 20 everytime after you kick off?  Killer

I’ve seen AVERAGE offensive/defensive teams with limited speed-skill, become pretty  good teams bc they can flip the field and pin people w their kicking game.  Going 80+ Each time you have the ball for 48 mins is a hard thing to do.

I think this is the ultimate test for Ashland's defense. E'town has the most balanced offense in 3A with a QB that has 37 career starts and speed all around him. The Tomcats have to shift from defending Belfry's ground and pound offense to E'town's mixed bag of spread and wing-t. I don't think Ashland has seen this level of speed and offensive variation this season. Should be a fascinating matchup.

Side note: This is the only class featuring two unbeatens and the RPI #1 vs. #2.

E-town is full fledged Wing T- under and gun- the launch point of the snap doesn’t effect their scheme. They do it as well as anybody.

Buck Sweep from UC, Buck from the Gun.

Jet sweep from UC, Jet from the Gun.

Counter Criss Cross from UC, Cntr XX from the gun.

Waggle (Bootleg) from UC, Waggle from the Gun.

Belly Down from UC off Jet Motion UC, Belly Down from Under Center

About the only things “different” that don’t marry one another from UC and Gun is that this year they have started running a Zone Dive from the Gun off Jet motion which hits a little better than Belly XB from the Gun w the Q (Belly series from UC or Gun is all Zone blocked from the Center on backside as is, so this isn’t anything 180 from what they were doing as is) & they run Rocket toss, FB trap mainly from Under Center and not in the Gun (although you can) as well as FB trap solely from under center

Their “Spread” passing game, all be it in the Gun, are also concepts they run from under center- mostly off the Belly (Keep Pass) Series, often times w Jet (Flat motion).

They’ll run a sprint draw from the Gun, that is the same as the longtime Wing T sprint draw concept off the Belly Series commonly known as “Sally”.  They block it the same way up front.

They are a prime example of how Old school offenses- one that is tried and true as any out there, maybe more so than any- have stood the test of time.  Doing it from under and in the Gun (the same could be said for others out there).

Give me the Panthers! Ross Brown has done a great job- he grew up under one of the best to ever do it. Has taken the keys to an already sweet ride and juiced it up even more in year one.  The Apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

Zebras, zebras, zebras..... Trouble with playing football is some people don't know how its played. Vulgar sidelines, crowd. Typical publics.

Props to Games (huge) and the twin players 3/ 22 (they play last year?? hmmm). Pedestrian without those 2. But, I believe taunting and antics should be called both ways. And E'town was doing it the whole game. But that's me. D is porous.

Too many mistakes, missed chances and etc to get some more hardware!! Kroger is AWESOME!!

They didn’t play their junior years, but they did their sophomore years.  Etown kids.

There are a lot of opinions and factors that make it interesting.

When you look at a number of different top level programs the HC has a job that allows them to spend more time of football. That of course is not the case everywhere but it is a factor. Would/does HHS place a HC in such a position?

A very passionate fan base is a double edge sword. HHS has a very passionate fan base. Such fan bases can be extremely beneficial but can be detrimental if the coach doesn’t align with certain portions of the fan base.

That same fan base at times appears to have varying opinions about the talent currently playing and available. Muller did a great job of convincing high school students that football was more important than a car or other distractions.

The same fan base appears to want a certain style of offense. So if Rick Darlington, Tim Murphy, Rick Stewart, Kelley Lee, or Roger Holmes applied for the job would they want those individuals over some others? Scott Co is one of two or three programs that has won 10 games or more for over 10 years running Belly, Belly Sweep, Tackle Trap, Quick Pitch and Power.

HHS is one of the top in all time wins which I believe Male and Valdosta HS but how many people know that or can name the top 5 without googling it? When a person goes through each state how many of the top programs can they name? How many can name the winningest program in each state?

The combination of factors between expectations, and environmental factors make it a very interesting scenario. One doesn’t see all the different combinations on a regular basis. Maybe the word is intriguing instead of interesting though they can mean the same thing.

    Killed it.

  8. Etown 47

    Paducah Tilghman 13

This was the score of last years 2nd round game. Etown returned all but 3 starters from that team. PT going to a smash mouth style of offense will keep this years game closer but Etown should still win handily. Larue co was effective against Etown for the opening drive of the game before the Panthers figured out how to stop the wishbone and then reeled off 35 unanswered points. I think the outcome of this game will be similar. Competitive for qtr or so and then the Panthers will pull away and move on. 35-7 Etown

    1) E-town is good; very good.

    2) E-town is good; very good.

    3) E-town is good;very good.

    4) E-town DID NOT reel off 35 unanswered points against LaRue County. LaRue ran 40 something offensive snaps in the first half. Their 1st drive went for almost 20 plays and a score, and they had another drive at the end of the first half that took another 15 + plays before time ran out on the E-town 20.

    5) In the 2nd half LaRue lost two OL on the same play in their first drive; then went to their Spread looks where they made the game 28-13 on a 50+ yard run late 3rd/early 4th before E-town tacked one on late in the game after a LaRue turnover on downs on their own 10 with about 2:00 left in the game.

By the way; did I say E-town was good and very well coached? That need not get lost in translation nor taken away.

They are STILL the overwhelming favorite to come out of Region 1 and maybe the entire west (as they should be), but there were some corrections that needed to be tended to in your depiction of the game.

  9. Some that are still active (other than Larkey. Coach Hollowell passed away in recent years):

David Barnes- He’s been Runner-Up at Caldwell County and has made it to the Region Finals at Caldwell on a few other occasions. Before that he was the HC at Daviess County for several years back when it was the old four class system.

Larry Moefield- Meade County- In his 13/14 seasons leading the Green Wave he’s 0-1 in the finals, yet has some Region titles and/or appearances all while battling some of the the biggest and baddest in the state (old 4A/current 6A)

John Edge- Owensboro Catholic. Coach Edge and the Aces are always in the mix of things year in year out come late November/early December since he’s been there the last 14 years.

Craig Clayton- Hoptown (version 2.0). Coach Clayton has the Tigers in a couple finals, but they weren’t able to win one. I’m not sure his win total, but it has to be up there somewhere.

I know he went to TN and had some success also at Franklin HS and Hillsboro.

  10. The Tigers start 8 freshmen and sophomores on defense, and 7 on offense (including the quarterback (freshmen), running back (freshmen), and best slot receiver). They lost their top senior running back to injury for the season two weeks ago. They lost their defensive middle linebacker/starting fullback (also K/P) this past week to injury, as well as the leading receiver and a starting OLB. None of those players would have beaten Central, but it was an inopportune time to put brand-new starters in on a team that is basically a JV freshmen/sophomore team playing the Central's, Waggener's and E-Town's of the world.

Becherer was ejected at Larue Friday night and therefore shouldn't play?

Becherer wasn’t ejected; nor any of their “main” skill players. Etown and LaRue both had one ejected...neither being one that touches the ball much and/or any.

  11. I've watched Jay Becherer every game for the last 3 years and he's as tough a kid as I've seen in a long time. Got D1 talent just not prototypical D1 size. Kid leaves it all on the field every game, fantastic player.

I hope somebody takes a chance on him; he's one of those kids where you need to take the "measurable" (mainly his height I'd guess?) & toss any 'negative' out the window. I'd love nothing more than to see WKU or somebody like that take a chance on him.....he's going to be a "Looky at what we have here" for somebody at the next level.

  12. Becherer's a great pick, Harry. He's averaging a whopping 15.8 ypc this year and has scored 8 rushing TDs on just 34 carries.

For me, a couple of very impactful two-way players come to mind. RB/LB Derek Wellman from Belfry and WR/DB Reese Smith from Boyle County. Wellman leads the Pirates in rushing and tackling, and is a tremendous leader. Smith is just a sophomore, but is already one of the top WRs in 3A and has picked off five passes this year on defense.

...and, he’s only played about half of the snaps due to the amount of running clocks they’ve had. (Becherer that is)

  13. That makes Thomas Nelson's regular-season finale v. Bethlehem absolutely critical for them. Bethlehem currently has two wins, and would appear to be a favorite over Campbellsville and Ft. Knox. My eyeball test tells me Bethlehem-TNHS will be a tight game, as has been the case in this series of late.

No bigger fan of Bethlehem until that final game than Thomas Nelson right now. You said it.

  14. It will come down to a point system based off the non district wins each of them have.

You get a point for every win that said team(s) you defeated has (again; non district).

In this case Bardstown has 0 (due to Nelson and Marion being winless so far).

To make thinks even more complicated; Thomas Nelson also has 0 points due to Nelson County.

Henry County has 5 and is the current 3 seed right now.

If Bardstown and Thomas Nelson were to both stay at 0 points; then I BELIEVE the 4 seed would go to Bardstown due to them winning the head to head.

  15. Sitting here on our balcony of the condo we've had in Orange Beach (AL) this week watching the waves roll in....waiting on the girls to get ready for our family pics on the beach.

Life is good as is, but it's been really good this week.

For those of us high school football enthusiasts; I can't begin to put into words how nice having an open week coincide with fall break is.......3rd year in a row. I'm not sure there is any going back once you've gotten a taste of it.

    I GET IT now.. lol
