  1. The speech by the student body president was also banned. Odd.

Op-Ed: My Speech Was Also Cut from Holy Cross Graduation | The River City News

While I didn't see much wrong with the valedictorians speech, I found nothing wrong with this speech. Only thing I can think of is that they didn’t let her deliver due to not allowing the other or the fact that both were sent in for approval too late as indicated in the article? I happen to know a couple of folks mentioned so eventually I’ll find out the scoop.

  2. I have a cub cadet riding mower with a Koehler engine. It’s about 7 years old. I’ve had the front gasket replaced on it 5-6 times. Really poor design. The oil gasket sits above the muffler and causes the gasket to warp and leak oil. After about 30 seconds of running the mower starts to smoke for a minute or so burning the oil that has dripped down. Took it back up to my buddies at Cottingham’s and they gave me a quart of oil and asked me come back in June after the repair crunch is over. Disappointed with the headache of the mower but love the customer service knowing they will fix the issue. Cub has even tried a conversion kit that did not solve the problem.

  3. There was not one.

The openly gay student had his speech pulled from the program the morning of the ceremony because the diocese felt it was too angry and personal. His message was telling the students to use their voice and stand up for their beliefs.

The bishop did not show up for the graduation. The student gave his speech thru a megaphone after the ceremony outside of the building.

Denied permission to speak at his own graduation, Holy Cross valedictorian delivers speech outside - WCPO Cincinnati, OH

  4. I hope you know I was having fun. Where you at? South Carolina? I'll be in Hilton Head in July. We've been there 5 consecutive years. It's truly too nice and convenient.

Of course I knew you were having fun. Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Dunes. 5 days of food and fun.

Now at lake Norris hoping to dodge the rain.

  5. The competition to make the team is what I want him to experience more than anything. As I mentioned earlier we are moving to Lexington and I plan to send PP2035 to LCA. If we were in Louisville it would be Trinity, St. X or Male. If we lived in NKY it would be CovCath or Highlands.

There aren’t many better life lessons than working as hard as you can and using your talent to the best of your abilities and then seeing the outcome. In life there are going to be times when you aren’t good enough. You have to figure out what you can and can’t do and adjust. You have to compete in damn near everything and you also have to learn how to become an asset to help the team achieve success. Life lessons like that can’t be taught in the classroom all of the time and more often than not the life lessons kids learn in HS sports have a lasting impact on them more than anything else that they learned in school.

And what if HE chooses to be in the band or become and artist instead of playing sports? No wonder you love Lavar Ball so much.

  6. Maybe there are some fans who think that way, but I think for the majority of UK fans we would love to have talented kids from Kentucky on the roster, especially when you have 2 as talented as Kyky and Dontaie who are picking up major offers, but if it comes down to Kentucky taking Kyky or Tyrese Maxey, I want the best player. If Dontaie or Kyky are willing to potentially wait a year or 2 behind potentially more talented players, I would LOVE to have them in the blue and white, but not at the expense of not getting a more talented player who wants to come to Kentucky.

I’m still not seeing the “major offers” come in for Allen. Can’t argue that X is a big hit, but still not seeing any from the traditional powerhouse schools. Maybe once one strikes that they will all come. I’d love to see him play in Lexington. Always have a special connection to a kid from the state playing for the Cats.

  7. A guy in our league, Lawnboy’s brother, set up a web site that tracks scores so we can check on other golfers and see league standing, scores, money winners, schedule, etc. Pretty cool site.

You can actually send in an order for food to the place we go after the round of golf.

  8. Yes. A damn good sports school. I have one grandkid now. He’s a boy. If I lived in NKY and my grandson played sports he would go to CovCath. Without question. I assumed CovCath cost more than what it actually does so to me, IMO, for what I want out of a school, it seems like a bargain.

While Cov Cath may have an outstanding sports program you had better hope the PP2035 is a stud. Lots of competition to make and or start a team.

In my younger years, I helped a fundraiser to keep Newport Catholic open and to stop them from combining with Brossart. I later moved south of Brossart and was thinking how wonderful that super school combining those 2 high schools would have been. As my children went on to high school my feeling reversed again. My oldest was able to start on his HS team and would have struggled to get minutes if those 2 schools were one power house. I liked the idea of those 2 schools offering more positions for more kids. Twice as many of everything giving more kids more opportunities to participate. Knowing the majority of those kids will not be playing after high school.

Priorities on choosing a High school should be about the education and the extra curriculars that are offered that best suit the child.

  9. Those numbers are hard to compare when you take into account the school sizes. Cov Cath is the largest school in the diocese, so they are logically going to have a larger number of students who will score lower on their ACT. I haven't checked recently, but although they may be in the relative middle for ACT scores, they were *fairly* recently leading the diocesan high schools in total number of Governors Scholars and National Merit Finalists.

Funny you mention it is hard to have a high average on the ACT since they have the most students but they may have the most total numbers of Gov Scholars and NMF's. Well that maybe be because they have more students? Or if not, wouldn't all of those scholars and finalist raise the overall scores?

Just busting your chops, Cov Cath is a great school and if I lived closer it would have been a tough decision not to send my son to an all boys school like I went to.

  10. I would say there is not near the volume of music in those countries that speak to killing, raping, and committing other violent crimes as okay or even glorifying those actions. I am sure its there, but not to the extent it is in the US.

Let me clarify my opinion by the way. I do not think media/music is THE reason for violence, but I do believe it is a contributing factor in why our culture has changed since the 1950s.

Example: A low income kid who has no real family to guide him, lives in a lower income area. With nobody taking the time to pour into his life, he gets his advice from those he looks up to...in this case, a certain artist who continue produces music about violent crimes. If no other solution is given to that kid, that is what he will be, because that is the culture he comes to know. Now there are so many other factors in this scenario, but the music can contribute to the behavior.

Interesting point of view and I can see how this comes into play in a lot of lower income/broken family type situations. But it does not explain the school shootings. These kids haven't seemed to be under privileged.

  11. What I would be looking for in a school for my sons/grandsons.

And that is what? A good sports school? A school that ranked 5th out of 8 in ACT scores when I did my research? FYI, The lowest ranked has the best program for LD students. An all boys school? Not a good option if you had grand daughters. Cov. Latin is an option as an accelerated school that allows bright students to skip grades. Each of the schools offer an excellent fit for any given student. Have to gauge what is best from the outside based upon the cost of tuition.

  12. This is all great stuff. Thanks folks. I have never known how much it cost to send a kid to private school. Some that I thought would cost more are considerably less than I thought and others are considerably more.

From the outside looking in CovCath looks like a bargain.

    Based upon?
