  1. Ryle was led by Jenna Crittendon with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

I attended the game and feel the final score was not a good indication of the competitiveness of the game. St. Henry trailed by 6 points at the half and cut the lead to 3 points about halfway through the 3rd qtr. Not taking anything away from Ryle, they were clearly the better team on the floor yesterday and the depth they bring from the bench just eventually overwhelmed St. Henry. St. Henry struggles to find offense, and at times yesterday there seemed to be a "lid" on the basket at the St Henry end. The ref's pretty much let the girls play and called very little in the way of fouls, which definitely favors the aggressive style of the Raiders. Good luck to Ryle and Notre Dame in their games tomorrow at Mercer County.

  2. Final

Hard fought game by two evenly matched teams. I thought the difference in the game was the balanced scoring attach by Conner and Conner's ability to knock down some 3 pointers. Crusaders did a good job of shutting down Conner's Beasly, limiting her to 6 points on the night. St Henry scoring seemed to by limited to the paint, and Janszen and Gamm combining for 30 of the teams 42 points. Seems to be a common theme here, but thought the refs made as many bad calls as good, bad calls going both ways. St. Henry called for 3 offensive fouls; don't see that often in a girl's game. Overall, a very exciting game between two good teams, multiple lead changes with no team holding more than a 5 point lead throughout the game.

  3. Don't know that I would judge Conner based on this game. Dixie's program is struggling.

Doesn't seem to be a lack of talent with Rader, Bowman, and Jackson. I would have thought Dixie would "match up" well with Conner. Is the Dietz girl not playing basketball this year ? I would have expected Dixie to be a strong contender for the 34th District this year with Ludlow and St. Henry graduating most of their starters from last year.

  4. Final

Wow, from the box score it would certainly indicate that Conner is far better than the "preseason" ranking of 9th in the ninth region. Dixie should be a solid team with talented senior leadership, but it appears Conner had no trouble with them. I look for Conner to surprise a lot of teams this year.

  5. Name 10 players in the region better than Jump.

start with the 9 other players on the list, then consider not a single player from Notre Dame, Conner, Holmes, Dixie, Villa, Holy Cross and Ludlow were selected to the top ten. I have seen Jump play on several occasions, and consider her an excellent guard, but so are Beasley (conner), gamm (st henry)

and schorer (villa); just to name a few.

You are correct, NDA plays Scott Saturday night for the regional final at Ryle @ 7pm.

They met earlier in the year and NDA did pull out the victory, however, it should be a very competitive match with both teams big hitting stars (Tibbs and O'Connor vs. Wulfeck and Barton) going against each other. In the end, I think NDA's 'other' players are stronger than Scott's 'other' players. Especially when you have the POY Schellhaas patrolling the back row for the Pandas.

This Thread has been hijacked by the Volleyball crowd. How about some discussion involving Notre Dame soccer and the match up with St, Henry next week in the first round of the State Tournament. Should be a doozy with Notre Dame ranked 1st in state and SHDHS ranked #4. Lots of speed and lots of talent on both teams. The winner of this game will have an excellent chance of bringing home a State Crown.

Did Conner really lose that much talent to drop them to #9, ranked below St. Henry and Villa ? Can't believe they won't be more competitive this year. Glad to see Abby Janzsen get some recognition as "top ten" players in the ninth. Had the opportunity to watch her play last year against Highlands, Ryle and Newport Catholic, in my biased opinion she was the best "post" player on the floor. Don't believe me; just review stats from those games. I would rank her in the top 5 in the region. Abby Jump is a good player for Ryle, but wouldn't consider her in the "top ten". It will be interesting to see how Moss fits in with the Boone Team, certainly has the potential to be a stand out if she can get along with Nell and become a team player. Look forward to some exciting games in the ninth region this year.:dancingpa

  8. The schedule is a lot more difficult than last year. They have a great coach and I am sure they will be ready for the tournament, by the end of the season. Dont be suprised if they have a better team than last year, but the win loss record might not reflect that, because of the difficult schedule.

Wow, I just don't see it. I hope the crusaders can prove me wrong, but I can't see this squad being a better team than last years. Losing 3 of your starting 5 is always difficult, and I didn't see a lot of depth on the bench last year which makes me wonder what this season will bring. The good news is that most of the teams in the District (exception being Villa), also lost a lot of talent from the Senior Class that graduated. I do agree that they will improve as the season progresses, but that is partly due to the fact that most players are "multiple sport" athletes and go months without playing basketball leading up to the season. I think the majority of the potential starters (Janszen, Gamm, McArtor, Hasken) are currently playing soccer, and hope to bring home a STATE TITLE in early November this year.

The Lady Cru Soccer team is currently ranked 4th in the state and have already captured the "All A State Title". :dancingpa

    Good luck lady Cru !!!!

  9. Oh get a life ha. Good one hahahaha. :thumb: Actually I did play that day and shot a 76 at the Willows.:sssh: So what are you saying, that Twin Oaks is harder?:ohbrother::laugh: I am sure you are right and I am wrong.:idunno:

Perhaps you should enroll in High School, sounds as though you would be quite the STUD of the golf team.....:notworthy: Are you really going to boast about shooting a 76 at the willows ???

  10. Oh get a life ha. Good one hahahaha. :thumb: Actually I did play that day and shot a 76 at the Willows.:sssh: So what are you saying, that Twin Oaks is harder?:ohbrother::laugh: I am sure you are right and I am wrong.:idunno:

Your original post makes it sound as if they played World of Sports or Pioneer course. "TWIN OAKS SERIOUSLY :puke:" Twin Oaks, played from the tips and considering the conditions, was a formidable challenge. No need for you to take a shot with comments like "really bad golf out there this year". Just my opinion :thumb:

  11. Even though I have two cousins whose daughters play on St. Henry's team , I believe that Newport Central Catholic will win this game by 12+ points . Go Breds !! :thumb:

Not much love here for the Lady Cru... St. Henry is a much improved team from the early loss to NCC. The Cru played Highlands and LCA late in the year and took both of these games to the wire. I believe the coaching staff has the team much better prepared to handle the pressure from NCC, but the tenacious defense that NCC plays will definitely be a factor. I also agree that foul trouble could play a big role in the outcome, both for NCC and St. Henry. The Lady Cru has relied on a 7 girl rotation of late, and keeping Abby Janszen and Taylor Gamm on the floor will be crucial. Good luck Lady Cru, the St. Henry faithful are very proud of your accomplishments. Sometimes being the "underdog" can be a positive thing, go out and take care of business.:D

  12. The Ryle team has a lot of problems.

Three people on the bench think they are the head coach. I'm not sure which one is right.

They don't have a point guard.

Not one single competent/confident ball handler.

Look at the assist to turnover ratio for their "point guard".

They have girls playing out of position.

(the most logical choice for point guard is playing on the post!)

They went 19-10 - with a soft schedule.

Of the 29 games they played, only 12 games were against teams with winning records.

Ryle won 6 of these 12 games.

This looks "OK" until you look at who they beat in four of these games.

    1. Walton Verona.

Except for Cooper, Ryle was the only 9th Region school to even schedule Walton Verona. I guess this was a "grudge match" game.

    2. Lewis County.

From the very weak 16th Region.

    3. Conner.

This was after Conner lost their point guard and center for the season. The depleted Conner team still took Ryle to the wire.

    4. Campbell County.

Ryle won in Overtime. NCC, Boone, Notre Dame and Simon Kenton all handled Campbell Co. with ease.

Ryle was the beneficiary of a perfect storm against Notre Dame. They had an incredibly hot shooting night. Ryle went 6-10 from behind the arc and 22-25 (88%) from the free throw line. That performance would be difficult/impossible to duplicate. For the season Ryle was 39% from three point range and 64% for FT's.

7 of the 10 games that Ryle lost were to teams from their own 9th Region.

You have to be competitive with teams from Lexington and Louisville if you want to be recognized as a tough team.

Ryle played 3 teams from the 11th region, and lost to all three of them.

This includes Henry Clay who went 9-20 for the season.

It also includes Scott County who's team consists of (6) 7th graders, (2) Freshman, (5) Sophomores and (2) Juniors.

    Now that's a young team.

During the course of the season Ryle managed to lose their best player (and potential future Miss Basketball candidate), Sydney Moss.

From what I understand this situation could have been, should have been, handled MUCH better.

I have been told that ~1/3 of the team wanted to lose the first game of the district in order to bring this season to an end.

Approximately the same number say they will not be back next year.

It seems they have a lot to work on before next Fall.

Would be willing to bet the "1/3 of the team wanted to lose the first game of the district in order to bring this season to an end." would be referring to the girls sitting the bench (thinking they could perform better than the girls on the floor), and not the 7 or 8 girls that played their hearts out and were in tears following the loss in the St. Henry game.

  13. I believe Highlands had a few starters out.

I believe Adler was the only player missing that night, and with the depth that Highlands has, don't believe it impacted the game dramatically. I think it's obvious that Highlands, NDA, Boone, Ryle & NCC are the top teams in the 9th. Don't think you can count out Holmes, St. Henry or Ludlow from pulling the upset in the tournament. I think all three have shown the ability to step up on occasion and play at the next level, just seem to lack consistency. In regards to the close score of the St. Henry / Ludlow game last night, no big surprise here. Ludlow is a solid team with perhaps the most formidable trio of post players in the 9th Region. I think St. Henry was thrilled to walk away with a close victory.

  14. Chelsea Tolliver from 8th Region Simon Kenton is the best player in our area, and Katie Kitchen from 10th Region Campbell County is as gritty a player as I have seen this year and should be mentioned in the top ten in our area but for the 9th region only here is my opinion:

    1. Lauren Tibbs- Scott HS

    2. Allison Long- Conner HS

    3. Jennifer Bivens- Newport HS

    4. Jenna Crittendon- Ryle HS

    5. Courtney Sandfoss- NCC

    6. Jacy Bradley- Boone Co. HS

    7. Casey Jackson- Notre Dame Acadamy

    8. Katie Allen- Highlands HS

    9. Sydney Moss- Ryle HS (I know she is no longer on the team )

    10.Abby Jump-Ryle HS

Obviously you have not seen St. Henry play this year. Sophomore Abby Janszen is the real deal, averaging 14 points and 9 rebounds per game. Don't see how you cannot include her in the top 10.

  15. So a 7th grade kid can go to a middle school and make the varsity team. She plays for 2 years, takes playing time away from high school kids, then attends a different high school. She played for a high school 2 years that she never attended, and kids that did attend the school, who wanted to play, sat the bench. Given that the basketball team is an extracurricular activity of the high school, haven't the high school kids been cheated? Agreeing that the best players should play, shouldn't those players actually attend the school?

"I can tell you that St Henry District High School will not allow students from their "feeder" schools to try out or participate in any Varsity, JV, or Freshman athletic teams unless they need help in filling a roster. Once accepted on a team, most coaches will play based on ability, not grade. So in answer to your question, they will NOT allow a non-tuition paying grade school student to take a spot away from the high school student. In St. Henry's case, I would say it makes sense, seeing that so many of the most athletic students from their feeder schools end up at Cov Cath & Notre Dame...."

sounds as though you agree with the policy at St. Henry District High School.

  16. This was probably the Lady Centurions' ugliest win of the year, but a win's a win for a 19-3 record. After last night's emotional win over Manual, CAL's Coach Rice played the starters less than half of tonight's game with the exception of Allison Karst who scored 14. Usual leading scorers Clair Buchanan and Antonita Slaughter saw limited action but provided some defensive stops and rebounds.

CAL's bench players had an up-and-down game. After trailing by 3 at halftime, St. Henry stayed within 10-12 points for most of the 2nd half. Never giving up (especially the shooting of #14 and #10 combined with the hustle of #5), they cut the lead to 41-35 with a few minutes left, forcing CAL's starters to return to preserve the victory until the last 30 seconds.

For CAL, it hopefully provided some valuable playing time for all as they prepare for the post-season. For St. Henry, it served notice that they should never be taken lightly because they can certainly play some ball.

St. Henry certainly has nothing to hang their heads about after battling back and keeping the game in reach until the final minute. St. Henry lacks the depth of the programs like CAL and having one starter on the bench with an injury (Rolf) and another getting limited minutes after re-injuring an ankle (Kolkmeier) didn't help matters. I know that CAL tried to limit the minutes of the starters, but even with the starters on the floor the game was held close. I thought sophomore Abby Janszen (#13) matched up very well on Slaughter and the pressure applied to the guards by sophomore Taylor Gamm (#4) kept CAL from getting into any kind of offensive rhythm. Good luck to CAL in the post season; they're a great basketball team and a good group of girls. It was a pleasure to watch a "top program" of girls who keep their ego's in check and represent their school so well. :thumb:

  17. Your problem is with the paying tuition, I guess it makes sense I hope St. henry is ok with losing players. If they are good for them...

Simply stating the school policy, never said I had a problem with paying tuition. With no guarantee that "feeder school" students will end up attending there, there's always a risk of taking playing time from freshman/sophomore players already enrolled in the program and giving 7 & 8th grade girls that experience, only to lose them to a competing program. I guess you could call it a double edged sword. Personally, I would prefer to allow students of any age/grade to try out, play those with the most talent.

  18. Hmmm. So non tuition paying grade schoolers can play for NCC, taking spots from tuition paying NCC students? Yeah, I see where that might wrankle a few people. Next question. Do any other NKY private schools employ this practice?

I can tell you that St Henry District High School will not allow students from their "feeder" schools to try out or participate in any Varsity, JV, or Freshman athletic teams unless they need help in filling a roster.
