In the finale of the tripleheader tonight the Varsity Breds never trailed in this one. The Breds speed was Highlands downfall. Jamie Kohls had a nice stretch with 7 straight in the 1st half to get the Breds a comfortable led, although Olivia Huber only had 2pts. her speed and jumping ability forced many turnovers. Can't say enough about the "hustle" of Aubrey Muench and another solid game from Nikki Kiernan. For Highlands, Schaefer is a really nice playerand did a great job of taking the ball to the basket, but they could not get the ball to her in the paint. Very physical game tonight as you could almost call it "hackfest", the whistles were blowing quite often.

Highlands (8-7) -- Fisse 3, Watson 2, Schaefer 15, Daly 1, Coffey 2, Bridewell 5, Combs 2.

Newport Central Catholic (8-3) -- Huber 2, Ware 5, Mayes 1, Muench 13, Kiernan 12, Schalk 5, Kohls 9.

 

JV game was a blowout as the Breds full court press had the Birds "caged up". Newcath up 15-2 at half, 32-8 after 3rd, and a final of 44-15.

 

Freshman and the battle of "undefeateds" goes to Highlands in convincing fashion. Highlands up 11-0, 18-4 at half (4 ft's for NC), and a final 30-19. Were in a unbelievable "FUNK" from start to finish, much can be blamed on Highlands speed and press.

Nice update!

I wouldnt say that NCC had too much speed for Highlands as much as I would say that the Birds were and will be pretty much outmanned the rest of the yr out especially against better programs. Game looked slow for the Birds because they are simply still playing confused. I would think that it is really hard to get all warm and fuzzy about your performance last nite if your in the NCC camp with the Birds missing a couple players, but hey a win is a win. It appeared that Coach Dawn was less then happy to say the least and not just with the refs, lol.

I was impressed with Muench from NCC as she appears to be NCC best athlete and leader on the floor and Kiernan is a yr away from being dominant in the paint imo.

Schaefer and Daley look really frustrated but both will definately become better players because of the adversity that they are enduring along with the newbies.

Hang in there girls, keep working hard and learning and FWIW, I just looked outside the window and the sun just came up.
