Boone County 2011/2012

Featured Replies

What does Boone County need to do to improve in 2011/2012? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

They need to find some shooters/scorers since they are losing two key scorers which were both 3 point shooters. Also have someone to lean on when teams double team Moss.

I completely agree. Moss is a great player but they will need a "supporting cast" to help them get back to the Regional Finals and to State. That supporting cast needs to include a couple outside shooters for sure.

I think Moss' supporting cast will be fine. Other returning starters for the Lady Rebels include senior center Lydia Nash who at 6-0 averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds in her first year as a starter and junior point guard Jessica Jones who should be more of a scoring threat this year. She was very good as a defender as a sophomore and, with the year's experience, should be even better running the offense. Those three form a solid base for Boone County.

The fourth starter will likely be athletic senior Elizabeth Switzer who at times over the past couple of seasons has shown explosive play. I think she could well be the key to Boone County's ultimate success this season. She can jump out of the gym and with Moss and Nash should make Boone County a very tough team on the boards.

The fifth starter? Good question but I expect Coach Nell Fookes to come up with a good fit. I've heard that junior-to-be Brianne Popp had a real good summer and could win that spot. Popp is long for a guard and very quick and athletic. Senior Hinako Harrison is a possibility as well. Harrison is short like departed second leading scorer Stacy Shrout but is a good outside shooter and will be one of the players to fill that role, as a starter or off the bench. Krissy Hickman who is one of those scrappy players who seems to always come up witht he loose ball is another who could potentially start in some situations but will be a contributor even if not starting.

Boone has a number of other good support players who gained valuable experience last year on the Boone County JV team which played very solid basketball. Within that group there is a nice distribution of size and guards that can handle the ball.

Tough to lose multi-year starters, three point shooters like Shrout and Annie Browning, but I think Boone County will be fine. I watched Moss all summer whip double teams from some really good AAU teams, but she was more impressive in getting the ball to the open player when double teamed. And I think the other players Boone County has on the floor will benefit from that.

I expect the Lady Rebels to be just as tough as ever. How far can they go? To be determined but should be fun to watch!

Thanks for the detailed update WVFrank. Sounds like they should be pretty solid as long as whoever Moss dishes the ball off to when she is double teamed can finish. I look forward to watching them play this year. Nell always has her team ready and they are always exciting to watch.

I expect Boone's center to be more productive in the post.

Can they find a shooter to open up the middle?

I think they will, Clyde. Could even be Moss. She shot 35% last HS season from three although not taking a lot of shots. She shot the three a bit more in certain games on this summer's AAU circuit and shot at about a 40% clip. Harrison shot 42% from three last season in limited duty so is a capable shooter.

Also, double teaming Moss in the paint will lead to feeds to Nash for scores, IMO.

Seniors Harrison and Hickman and Jasmine Davis are not playing this year. However, Boone will still have a good top 7 to 9 players.

I look for starters to be Moss, Nash, and Hill at the 3 through 5 positions, with Switzer a very capable sub who can also score 8 to 10 a game. Jones will be the PG again and is a tremendous defender, and look for Popp to be the 2 and spell Jones at the PG. I expect the younger Switzer (freshman) will get some minutes at the 3, and freshman Macy Ford to get some backup as an extra PG. I think that although Boone lost a couple of good three-point shooters, they will be harder to defend this year and more multi-dimensional. New Cath was able to face guard Boone's three-point shooters last year in the regional final. Boone will be able to pound the ball inside to Moss and Nash, and Popp can hit some threes to keep defenses honest, and Kathleen Murphy off the bench has good height and can get hot shooting too. Moss will involve her teammates when double teamed and will find open players. She is very unselfish. I think Boone's top 6 will all be capable of double figure games at times, with Moss and Nash leading the way.

I had not heard about those three not playing. Hickman played well at times last year, seemingly getting every loose ball she was near. But the addition of Hill may have cut into her playing time this season. Harrison was a pretty good three point shooter and I had thought she might provide some spot duty help against zone teams.

I think your starting line-up is likely right and pretty solid. I've been hearing some really good things about Popp. She is pretty good size for a guard and I thought, after watching some JV games last year, that she cmight really come on this season. Boone could go really "big" if Popp moved to point at times and Switzer came in at the 3 with Moss going to the 2. Of course the lineup you suggested could be the starters is bigger than anything the Lady Rebels have had in the past couple of seasons. They should be a very good rebounding team.

Hopefully Popp, and the freshmen Ford and the younger Switzer, and perhaps Murphy, can help replace the 3-point shooting Boone lost with the graduation of Shrout and Browning, but I agree that Boone will harder to defend.

I thought the problem last year against NCC was that they kept running three players at Moss and when she'd give the ball up the open players wouldn't take advantage of being open. Teams are probably going to continue to double and triple-team Moss, particularly out on the floor, so other players need to step up when she gets the ball to them. Of course there is another answer to that out-on-the-floor triple team but I'll leave that one alone and let it reveal itself if it has to happen.

I thought Boone could be very solid again this year but the addition of Hill has me really excited and looking forward to getting things going. I'm ready for that first scrimmage in 11 days!

I recently went to an orthopedic doctor and he says I need a knee replacement. I told him "Not til late March or early April, Doc, I'm not missing basketball season!"
