What does Greenwood need to do to improve in 2010? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

Probably should start by finding a coach.

Greenwood will take a step back this next year. There's absolutely no way of avoiding that. They have a change in head coach, and may have some in the staff as well (not certain who's going with Nelson). Last I heard Cavanaugh was expected to take over, but nothing official yet. The team lost most of their skill position players, which is what Greenwood historically lacks. If Greenwood were not splitting they'd have had a tough time, let alone doing it when they lose a chunk of their populace.

 

Some of what Greenwood is facing:

 

-Lost their top 4 rushers. Three graduated, and Hunter Neveras is playing for Bowling Green High now. Their leading returning rusher is listed on their roster as a Tackle and rushed for only 44 yards last year. No returning rusher had more than 11 carries.

-Lost their QB. Backup QB was 2/4 passing last year for 36 yards and 1 TD. And even if he had more passing yards than that, Greenwood....

-Lost their top 8 receivers. 11 players are listed as having a catch for Greenwood last year, and 9 of those are gone. Their returning receiving corps has 2 catches for 22 yards.

 

Defensively, they're in a little better shape, though they did lose a huge amount of personnel there as well. 5 of their top 7 tackle leaders graduated, but they do still have some of their best players in Jeremy James and Austin Howell. Both were among the team leaders in forced turnovers and tackles, and will be expected to fill a role offensively as well. Their secondary is largely intact, with Tanner Thompson and Nix Crawford returning. Tanner (along with Jeremy James) led the team in interceptions, and is only going to be a sophomore.

 

Bottom line, Greenwood is going to have to have a lot of role players step up fast. They are usually decent on their offensive and defensive lines, but those skill positions are probably going to do them in next year. You're likely to see much more vintage Greenwood than the one you saw last year.
