Ryle's second and Conner's third game in the Knochelman tournament. The wind was blowing big time at CCH for this one. It is my understanding that Conner sat several starters for this game.

 

Ryle came out cranking the ball and put up 6 runs in both the first and second innings to take a 12-0 lead. After that Conner's reliever (don't know name) did a very nice job and only allowed two late inning runs by Ryle. In the 3rd and 4th innings it was Conner's turn to stroke the ball and they put up 3 runs in both innings, thanks to 3 HR's (2 were definitely wind-aided, but they count the same nonetheless). Interestingly, Conner had a runner caught attempting a steal of third in the top of the third inning, which is a bit unusual given they were down 12-0 at the time. (I guess they figured that first run was really, really important :lol:). Dice K came on in relief of Hempel in the 4th and went the rest of the way, allowing only two late runs by Conner.

 

Hitting leaders for Ryle were: Hoskins (3-3), Carney (3-5), Hensley (2-2), Steinle (2-3), and Ryan Donovan (2-2, 3 RBI).

Yeah for some reason Coach Arlo sat every starter but one and had another DH. I do not understand the thinking behind it.

Reliever was Mark Albrecht. Arlo started a freshman in CF this game....guess it just did not matter after the loss to CCH.

Not sure this is true. Ryle, Conner, and CCH could all have finished with one loss and it would have gone to some tiebreaker (whatever it was - probably runs allowed). As it turned out, CCH had two losses, so the winner of the Conner-Ryle game took the championship.

 

Ryle 3-0 (wins over St. H., Conner, and CCH)

CCH (win over Conner, losses to Ryle and St. H)

Conner 1-2 (win over St. H, losses to Ryle and CCH)

St. Henry 1-2 (win over CCH, losses to Ryle and Conner)

 

And I agree that a Conner-Ryle is a rivalry matchup between two district teams. Just a guess, but I would think the Conner seniors wanted to win this game badly and would have liked to have been on the field.

Do you really think that letting Mark Albrecht relieve and starting a Freshman in CF contributed to a 12-0 lead by Ryle right out of the gate? There were a few errors committed in the field by some upper classmen...so why does it make a difference if he started a freshman in CF??? There have been some bonehead plays by regular starters, so what's the reference to youth have to do with it. If you can play, you can play no matter what your age. There are pretty good freshman throughout the 9th region in case you haven't noticed.

You take away the fluke sac bunt that turned into three runs scoring including the batter and it could have been a lot more interesting.

When the time comes to play a District and rival opponent, Arlo will put the best players on the field that will get the job done.

The subs for Cooner did a good job not giving up when the score was 12-0 after 2 innings. Congratulations to Austin Way, Hanson and Walters for the long balls.

Queen of Pink - no one ever said Mark Albrecht, or anyone specific for that matter, contributed to the defeat. Albrecht name was to answer a prior question - he actually pitched well. In regards to freshman playing, it was only meant to describe why there are questions as to the decisions the coach made. The freshman may be the next Hank Aaron - it was immaterial to the statement which questioned why the coach chose not to put the BEST on the field.
