Theoldguy Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Highlights from the Ninth Region this year @ the BOKC Really not looking at the games but what you enjoyed about the Tournament or the Highlights in watching the Tourney.
statmanhensley Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I enjoyed working the games this year and being able to be the PA Announcer for the event. I will always love the high school game more than any other level of sporting event because of the athletes who play for not only their team or school, but for their town. Seeing the Newport Wildcats win the boys regional this year was awesome just because it had been so long since they had done it before and you could tell the people of Newport had finally gotten a HUGE monkey off their backs...I realize Newport Central Catholic has had a lot of success in athletics over the years and the fine folks who live in Newport are proud of those accomplishments, but to finally have the other school in town win something like this is just as sweet as all of those accomplishments. Also, to throw this out there, seeing the crowds this year for the entire tournament was much more enjoyable over last year...for this I am lumping the girls tournament in with the boys tournament. People will come out more often for the boys games but the support the girls had was just as loud and enthusiastic as the guys got. And finally, the student sections that some of the schools had was just tremendous. The two best were hands-down when St. Henry played CovCath in the boys tournament. Both were bigger than I expected and louder than expected as well. The CovCath Crazies doing their "Guido Fist Pump" dance when I got the sound guy to play the song below was awesome.
Theoldguy Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 First Night: I was luck enough to get into the BOKC prior to the doors opening to the general public on Monday and while on the edge of the floor talking to paNDA, I noticed the Bellevue Girls Team walking onto the floor to start their warm ups. What I noticed however was the Girls looking up and all over the BOKC and I was ready for them to yell Tigers and for the sound of Tigers echoing all over the Arena. They looked thrilled beyond belief to be on the floor. Again the Bellevue team! This time at the end of the game and how hard they took the loss. They cried and cried and hung their heads but they had no reason to hang their head. Sure myself and other don't like the blind draw but these young ladies only knew their season was over and for some playing a competitive basketball game wold never happen again. Still on Monday night: Villa and what had to be the entire school coming out to root on the Lightning. There were not a group of kids/students attending any of the girls games this week who had more fun screamed louder and really showed true school spirit then the VMA kids. Tuesday night: During the Ryle vs. NCC games not sure who but one of the players went diving into the seats along the opposite side of the court from press tables and knocked down all the chairs. If was funny watching the chairs falling down..... Wednesday night: The 25 or so Newport Students who were screaming and hollowing and making a ton of noise while rooting on their Wildcats. I was so happy for them since the much, much larger Ryle school had much fewer students from a percentage standpoint! Still on Wednesday night: The CovCath Crazies! People complained about the lack of cheering last year! They complained about the lack of excitement last year and they complain about the lack of students last year! Well the Crazies brought the excitement, they brought the noise and they entertained the crowd. Once again this season the CovCath Crazies showed why they are the best student cheering section not only in NKy but in the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky. It was strange to just sit and watch the fans across from me, just sitting and watching the Crazies do their thing while smiling, laughing and enjoying the Crazies! Gentlemen I am so proud of you all! Wednesday night still: One of the men in stripes during a 30 second time-out turned to me and commented "Can either one of these two teams (St. Henry vs. CovCath) make a Free Throw"! I and the couple of guys near me about busted a gut laughing! Saturday Night: The CovCath Crazies: When one of the stripes made a call that the Crazies thought was a poor call, they did their "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I want to be a ref" chant, I thought the Stripe nearest me who heard the whole thing, was going to bust his gut trying not to laugh out loud. He had a huge grin on his face and he I know, got a kick out of the cheer! Pittman going backwards and almost landing in my lap. He did ask me if I were Ok and told me thank you for stopping him from falling backwards. Sunday afternoon: Seeing the smiles on the Newport fans and knowing how happy they had to be since it has been so long sice the Wildcats have been to the Sweet Sixteen and their first trip ever to Rupp! Thanks to Mr Madrick, Mr Arnzen the Staff at the BOKC, the people on the official table and the Ninth Region fans who turned out in Record numbers!:thumb:
Flotsam Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I attended the games on Wednesday and Saturday. Both events were extremely well run. The BOK arena is a magnificent place to hold the tournament. No offense to Ryle, Conner and Holmes (all of which are great places to watch high school basketball) but they do not compare with a brand new state of the multi-million dollar facility. By keeping all of the fans in the lower bowl, the crowd energy level was very high. After the lumps the BOK arena rightfully took last year for their ridiculous position on media access, broadcasting the games, etc., it is only fair to offer praise for the A+++ job they did this year. The tournament was great.
Qryche11 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Seeing many friendly faces, taking in the awesome atmosphere, watching the games from an awesome vantage point. The whole tourney was a lot of fun and this is the first year I got to see all games played. The cov Cath crazies were hilarious and did a fantastic job supporting their team. The guy wearing the wig and jortz leading the cheers was cracking me up. My buddy eveb asked if they take a cheering class over there. Best part of the event though was watching the Wildcats play with so much heart and achieve what many kids dream and that is a chance to play at Rupp Arena.
