South Oldham 75 Owen County 54

Featured Replies

Much closer game than the final score. South played with 6th man Corey Dogan (6'0" senior guard, 8.3 ppg, 50% three point shooter), who was hit so hard on Monday vs. Jeffersontown that he actually doesn't remember the game... Definitely a "letdown" game for South, as it's hard for teen-agers to come back from a game against a top 10 opponent with quite the same intensity...

Owen also lacked a player, missing guard Kyle Kelly...

South pulled away from a back-and-forth first quarter, taking a 22-17 lead after one. But the Dragons - ranked in the top ten in the state in overall field goal % (#8), three point FG% (#1), and FT % (#3) - were struggling a bit from the field. Meanwhile, Owen repeatedly beat the South press, resulting in layups, frequently for Michael Colligan (game-high 26 points).

The Dragons pushed the lead into double figures briefly, but Owen kept fighting back. Although the Rebels never caught up at any time in the final three periods, they got to within four on a couple of occasions. Colligan - and later Sawyer Williams, who hit 3 of 3 shots in the fourth and finished with 14 points - both did a great job of infiltrating the South defense, taking the ball to the hole and taking advantage of their height. Very impressed with Colligan's movement without the ball... Colligan hit 10 of 13 shots - almost all from point-blank range.

Other than Colligan, the rest of the Rebels were just 9 of 29 from the floor.

South led, 34-27, at the half, and just 47-41 after three.

In the fourth, South Oldham switched to a 3-2 zone that completely turned the game around. Owen struggled against the 3-2, and when they did get shots, they struggled to hit them, going just 3 of 12 in the final quarter.

Although Owen's turnover total (unofficially 15 turnovers) wasn't exorbitant, it represented a major advantage for South, as the Dragons (unofficially) turned the ball over only 4 times. By the end of the game, this contributed to a huge disparity in FG attempts - South took 63 shots, hitting 27, whereas Owen took only 42 shots, hitting 19...

After hitting just 40% of their shots - and a mere 3 of 14 threes - in the first three periods, the Dragons finally began connecting in the final period, and the lead ballooned throughout the final period as South outscored the Rebels, 28-13. The Dragons hit 8 of 16 (50%) in the final frame, including 5 of 6 beyond the arc. Brice Jewitt was particularly hot in the fourth, hitting his last four shots (4 of 7 overall in the period), including three consecutive threes. Jewitt led the Dragons with 24 points on 10 of 19 shooting, but four South players reached double figures, including Carson Fields (12), Chris Schumm (11), and Casey Jackson (10).

Two of the region's tallest teams battled pretty much to a stalemate on the glass; unofficially, South outrebounded the Rebels, 26-25.

South improves to 21-5 on the season; Owen falls to 13-8. If South can defeat Carroll County (away) and Spencer County (home) to close out their regular season, they will tie the school mark for most victories in a season (23), with the potential to set a new mark in the first round of the district against Trimble County the following week.

From the "statistics lie" dept: South is one of the top FT% teams in the state, but the Dragons struggled at the line all night, sending 9 different players to the line, but cumulatively going just 13/22 for 59.1%. Owen - which shoots just 59% from the line for the season - hit 16/23 for nearly 70%. :ohbrother:

Congrats to South on the win.

I'm surprised that Dogan was allowed to play in this game with the obvious sign of a concussion (loss of memory) less than a week ago. Or did I read that wrong....did they play withOUT him?

I don't think you read it wrong, I think the colonel may have had a typo. Pretty sure he did not play.

Dogan did NOT play (my typo :ohbrother:). And a concussion was ruled OUT by the doctors...however, he did suffer a loss of memory. This was a significant loss for the Dragons; Dogan is "Mr. Offense" off the bench, and an extraordinary shooter. He should be back next week.

Dogan wasn't the only Dragon to suffer an injury vs. the Jtown Chargers on Monday. Casey Jackson suffered a broken nose, and Carson Fields took a blow to the head, however, both started against Owen.

Sounds like the Jtown game was quite physical.

I didn't see the Jtown game, but that's what I was told (that it was extremely physical). That's actually a good thing for South; the knock on past South Oldham teams was that they simply weren't physical enough to play with teams that wanted to play physical basketball. Exploding to the 20+ lead they had against Jtown early in the third period, then holding on for the win in that kind of a game has to bolster their confidence.
