South Oldham 85 Trimble County 34

Featured Replies

South Oldham (13-2, 2-0 District 29) defeated Trimble County at Trimble tonight, 85-34.

Trimble, missing leading scorer and #2 rebounder Trent Green, made a game of it early. Trailing South just 18-12 with under a minute to play in the first, the Raiders worked for the final shot, but a turnover gave South the ball and the Dragons instead got the final score of the period to go up 20-12 after 1 quarter.

Trimble did an excellent job of patiently working the ball to Justin Webb underneath early, but South changed defenses and denied the Raider playmaker the ball in scoring position the rest of the way, and he was held to just 2 of 11 shooting from the floor and 8 points. Webb is an excellent passer and scorer underneath, but simply found it difficult to get the ball in the position he needed for scoring opportunities.

The Dragons outscored the Raiders, 65-22, from that point on.

Despite the fact Trimble was shorthanded, it was probably the most impressive team performance for South, which came out of the locker room energized and intense, despite playing without reserve center Charlie Malueg (6-6 senior, 8 ppg), who had been playing very well of late. The Dragons also had to play without starting center Chris Schumm for 75% of the first half. Schumm, who hit his first two shots, hit the pine after picking up two quick fouls in the first quarter.

South outscored Trimble, 23-7 in the second and 24-8 in the third to take complete command of the game. Star forward Casey Jackson had his average - 16 points - at the half, started the second half, but was on the bench midway through the third for good. Ditto for Brice Jewitt, who scored 11 points. The starters all disappeared from the floor early in the third, although Schumm - who had sat nearly all of the first half - played much of the third before heading to the bench for good after three periods. All fourteen Dragons played in the game, and 11 scored, with for reaching double figures, including reserve guard Dylan Gordon, who finished second on the team in scoring with 13.

Free throws played a big part; although both teams were whistled for 16 fouls, South was fouled more while shooting, and made more free throws (18) than Trimble attempted (14). South hit a whopping 78.2% at the line.

Turnovers were also huge; South finished +11 in that dept, forcing 19 turnovers while coughing up the ball only 8 times themselves.

It was South's tenth win in a row, and - I believe - marks the Dragons' best start in school history.

Congrats to South on its tenth win in a row. The Dragons can clinch the #1 seed in the 29th District with a victory over North Oldham on 2/2/10 at North. The 29th District tourney this year will be at North.

Good luck to both teams the rest of the way this season!!!

Any news why Green did not play in the game? Thanks for the game review.

Green has other priorities and has left the team to concentrate on those priorities. Nothing bad...(except for the basketball team, which loses its star player).
