Boone County 52 Franklin County 36

Recommended Posts

Boone County advanced to the finals of the Gateway Holiday Classic to face Rockcastle County tomorrow night. The Lady Rebels rode a 24 point, 16 rebound performance by sophomore Sydney Moss and some solid outside shooting to the victory.

The Lady Flyers played tough aggressive defense and the game was tight for a good period of the game. They led 10-6 at the quarter and 21-20 at the half and led by as many as 6 before Moss got a steal and bucket just before the buzzer.

The third quarter saw Franklin County and Boone trading 3's and the Lady Flyers continuing to hold off Boone's charge. But the Lady Rebels jumped in front on a basket by Moss at the 1:17 mark of the 3rd quarter and never looked back. From the point at which Franklin County scored to lead 31-30 at the 2:11 mark of the third, Boone outscored the Lady Flyers 22-5 the rest of the way to walk away with the victory. Moss contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds during that surge.

Franklin County used a box-and-one and a variety of other defenses to double and triple team Moss but she responded with an 11-15 performance from the floor and went to war on the boards against a Franklin County squad that had several players similar in size to her. The physical battle between Moss and Franklin County's Chelsea Craig was something to watch!

Senior point guard Heather Sandlin sat out much of the second quarter after picking up two fouls but was outstanding in the second half with her floor generalship and also shot the ball well to finish with 9 points. Sandlin, Stacie Shrout, and Annie Browning each had two 3's and all were key baskets for the Lady Rebels.

Sandlin and Moss make a great duo. Any insight why Boone is dominating the second half in many games this season....or why the slow start in a game?

I think there were several factors in last night's slow start.

1.) It took a while for Boone to adjust to the "funky" defenses used by Franklin County used to try to slow Moss. That adjustment began in the second quarter and continued through the rest of the game.

2.) The loss of Sandlin for much of the second quarter after she picked up her second foul hurt. I thought when Boone was down just one at the half.....with Sandlin on the bench.....that that bode well for the Lady Rebels in the second half. The mid-court steal and basket by Moss also gave Boone a big lift going to the lockerroom.

3.) The really good outside shooting that started in the second quarter continued in the second half and was huge. Boone has not shot the 3 particularly well and is very capable, as shown last night.

4.) Defensive intensity picked up as the game went on and was really good in the second half. It made it very difficult for Franklin County to run their offense.

Hopefully the slow starts will be less evident from here on out.
