Highlands 39 Cooper 33 (Frosh)

The Bluebirds took care of business on their home floor tonight beating a very big Cooper Jaguar team. Jac Collinsworth led the Bluebirds in scoring with 10 pts while David Christian came off the bench to score 6. Cooper was led by Centers who had 12 and 6'6 Maniacci who had 8pts.

Cooper jumped out to a 9-4 lead after the 1st period as the Birds had several good looks but couldnt get anything to fall. The 2nd period is when the Birds turned up the full court defense and outscored the Jaguars 16-4 and took the halftime lead 20-13. The Warrior, David Christian, came off the bench in the 2nd period to score 5 points and snag some key rebounds. Christian does a lot of the intangibles like gather loose balls and creates a lot of tied up balls with his aggressiveness.

The 2nd half started with both teams getting up and down the floor breaking the press nicely and scoring in transition. I was impressed with #10 Morris for the Jaguars, he is a stocky little guard who has really good speed. He made some nice passes in transition and really penetrated well. Overall though the Jaguars struggled taking care of the ball and they also did not shoot well at all. Jac Collinsworth tossed in 6 points and Luke Turner dished out 5 of his game high 6 assists during the period. The Jags made a run at cutting into the lead outscoring the Birds 16-14. Most of the Jags points were scored by Maniacci the thin 6'6 Center who got to the line a lot making 6 or 7 FT's in the period. The score after 3 periods was Highlands 34 and Cooper 27.

The Birds played very good defense in the last period creating several turnovers and not giving the Jags any good looks at the basket. Collinsworth scored 4 of the 5 Bluebird points in the period.

A few points of interest in this game that I thought were interesting. I have noticed Maniacci's name in the Varsity box scores lately, was there a particular reason they brought him to Fort Thomas to play in a Freshman game? Obviously it didnt matter because the Birds have 6'4 210 lb 8th grader Nick True who battled with him on the block and held his own scoring 6 points and providing solid defense. These are two future players that will be fun watching. Maniacci has decent moves in the paint and does a nice job of getting to the line and he also alters shots with his length and shot blocking abilities.

The Birds are a buzzer beater away from being 3-0 on the season but improve to 2-1 tonight. They will play Dixie on Saturday morning at 10:30am at Dixie.

Nice bounceback from the SHDHS loss.

Yes they finished last night and played to win instead of not to lose.

He did see a couple of minutes at the end of some varsiy games but he needs to get much stronger to compete with those boys. I think the coaches are letting him get back to some of the games with kids his own age and also get JV time. He played the freshman game against Ryle as well this week.

That makes sense. He has a lot of potential and should be a force over the next few years. I was a little miffed at the Jaguars not going to him more.
