CAL's Lady Centurions led from start to finish, though the 3rd quarter was the turning point when they outscored the Lady Rebels 23-11.

Congrats CAL!

Antonita Slaughter had 21 points and 7 boards for CAL and was named the outstanding player for her squad. She hit three 3's, all from well outside the men's college 3-point line and is an outstanding offensive player and certainly worthy of her ranking among Kentucky HS players. Slaughter was 8-10 from the floor and 3-4 from three. Allison Karst had 14 and freshman guard China Dow added 13 for the winners.

 

Senior point guard Heather Sandlin scored 12 for Boone County and was named her team's outstanding player. Sophomore Sydney Moss had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Boone.

 

The Lady Centurions jumped out to a 7-0 lead, with a long opening three by Slaughter, and maintained control over a cold shooting Boone squad throughout the game. Boone made a run in the second quarter to cut CAL's 9-point opening quarter lead to 3. That surge was lead by Moss who showed some excellent moves and jumping ability inside and was difficult for the taller Slaughter to stop around the basket. But Slaughter answered with another long 3 and a hoop-and-one on a drive to push the margin back to nine.

 

The halftime margin of 10 could have been closer had Boone County been able to hit the open look three's they had at the end of both the first and second quarters.

 

The third quarter saw CAL pull away with a bunch of layups off of run outs on Boone misses or against a Boone press that was ineffective and was broken time and again by some nice passing by the veteran CAL squad.

Sandlin, for Boone, had some really nice feeds to Moss, as these two perfect this and if someone can get a consistent outside shot working Boone will be a factor. As we all know too well it is not what Nell does in the first week, it is what she does in the final week. Good luck to both teams. CAL is very talented.

CAL 67 Boone County 46

The Lady Centurions marched to the campus of Thomas More and achieved the aim of winning their second game of the season, silencing the skilled guns of the Lady Rebels, ranked #5 in the state in the Courier-Journal’s season preview.

Unlike their opening game against South Oldham, CAL came out shooting successfully from long range in the 1st half, hitting the mark on 5 of 8 three-pointers for a 62.5% clip by Antonita Slaughter, China Dow, and Anna Hart. Boone County tried to match the Lady Centurions from the outside, but managed to make only 1 of 11 (9.9%) for the first two quarters. However, the athletic agility of Sydney Moss kept the Lady Rebels in contention with some elusive moves in the paint and hard-fought offensive rebounding, allowing them to win the 2nd quarter by a 12-11 margin.

 

CAL took control in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Boone County 23-11. Although Slaughter continued to impress with her offensive ability in the paint or from long distance (game-high 21 points on 8/10 FG including three 3-pointers, 7 rebounds, 6 assists), her teammates also advanced the cause. After struggling with foul trouble in the previous game, Anna Hart hit 4 of 7 FG, including an offensive rebound, putback, and old-fashioned 3-point opportunity to offset the potential for a Lady Rebels’ comeback, and the effort was essential. By the 4th quarter, Boone County’s Heather Sandlin and Annie Browning had found the 3-point target within their sights, each hitting 2 of 3. Also heeding the battle call, CAL senior Allison Karst found or created openings to contribute 14 points. This was a cleaner game for CAL with improved shot selection and only 10 turnovers; the Lady Centurions’ ability, including the ball-handling skills of freshman Casey Marshall, to break the Lady Rebels’ press helped forge the final 21-point margin of victory. Only two games into the season, every player has received playing time.

--Moss is an athletic force, likely to be all-region with her offensive rebounding and ability to move/score in the paint.

--Balanced scoring bodes well for the team’s future. Sandlin can light it up from the outside and Davis is likely much better than this game showed.

--The Lady Rebels’ press will intensify and improve to cause problems for opponents.

 

CAL:

--Supporting cast: Although Slaughter is deserving of the attention she receives, it’s encouraging for CAL fans to see others producing offensively in double figures against a ranked opponent: Karst-14, Dow-13, Hart-10.

--Freshmen: Dow is making an immediate impact with scoring, offensive rebounding, and steals. Casey Marshall is receiving significant playing time, in large part due to her ball-handling and decision-making skills, similar to her older sister Jessie, a former CAL 1,000-point scorer who now serves as assistant coach.
