This was a ragged opener between two of the higher (pre-season) ranked teams from the Ninth Region and Northern Kentucky. The contest was filled with turnovers, more by Boone (officially 20) than by Newport Central Catholic. Key to creating those turnovers for the NCC squad was the quick hands and defensive savy of point guard Courtney Sandfoss who created a lot of problems for Boone. Sandfoss was also the games top scorrer with 15 points. Her main support came from senior center Mariah Tabor who had 8 and was New Cath's leading rebounder.

 

Boone's scoring was balanced as returning forward Joscelyn Davis had 11, and new point guard Heather Sandlin tallied 10 as did Ryle transfer Sydney Moss. Moss was credited with 11 rebounds as well.

 

Twice during the contest Boone ran up double digit margins only to see NCC scrap back and cut into the lead. New Cath cut the Boone margin on their last run to 34-29 at just under 5 minutes to play but Boone's Cortney Sellers drilled a crucial 3-pointer for her only points of the game and that pretty much sealed the final outcome. Davis put the final nails in the coffin with a couple of free throws with just under 2 minutes remaining.

 

Boone obviously missed the steadying influence provided by departed four-year starter Jacy Bradley (now at St. Louis U.) and will need to take better care of the basketball as the season progresses. You can bet that will be a focus of veteran coach Nell Fookes in future practices. And it is unlikely the Rebels will run into another defensive disrupter to match Sandfoss.

 

The game was attended by several college scouts and high school coaches scouting future opponents in BC and NCC. This was a hard played game with the typical first game mistakes. Look for both teams to have solid seasons and perhaps face one another post season as they did last year.

Talked to someone who attended the game and their description was almost exactly like yours. It appears NCC is going to have to find someone besides Sandfoss to consistently score in double digits. I would think Tabor will, but wonder where the other points are coming from against better teams. These two teams, along with Highlands, appear to be the class right now. I still believe Ryle could be a sleeper.
