South Laurel is going to state with this win. They defeated the 3 time defending 13th region champion to win their first 13th region title in their first year in the 13th.

I didn't realize that Corbin had won the region the last three years. I would assume it will be South's region for many years to come.......

South was in the 12th until this season. Corbin has been the dominant force in the 13th for the past several years.

IMHO, South will be the team to beat again in 2010. However, based on what all the team's are losing after this season and next season, don't be surprised if North Laurel isn't the region favorite in 2011. Many of their better players are sophs and they could be better next year than this year. They also have a couple of freshman who could contribute next year and should be very solid by 2011. They need more players to finish at the net. They return Kelsie Smith, but with Burchett returning at South, you better bring your A game anytime she is on the floor. Burchett, a junior, was named the 13th region player of the year, and deservedly so. I think the next vote getter would have to have been Gaines from South.

 

Kay Smith (South Laurel) was voted as the 13th region coach of the year, which is a great honor and well deserved for South's first year in the region. However, I probably would have voted for Lindsey Gasperic (Jackson County). The Generals were 14-12-2, made the region tournament in her first year as coach, her best players were probably sophs/jrs. The team was 6-15-2 the year before she got there. She did a remarkable job at Jackson County.

South Laurel will force everyone else to improve or get left behind. Corbin had a very good year after losing some very talented girls off of last year's team and should be better next year after losing only 1 senior. North Laurel, Jackson Co., Whitley Co. & Middlesboro should also be competitive next year.
