Size of Football Players

Featured Replies

I don't know if this thread is a good one or not but one of the things that I have noticed in the last 7 years is the size of the player in our area of Greenup County, Boyd, Lawrence, Lewis, etc. When my oldest son played in 2003 as a freshman the linemen were the size of barns, and this past year when my youngest son played he was one of the largest at 6'4 240 but he would have looked small to that senior team at GCHS in 2003. What has happened or am I not seeing it.

I haven't seen a lineman like McKenzie, Porter, Carver, Wells, Royster in a long time.

I honestly think high school football players have gotten bigger. They are more lean now then they used to be. You will not see 6'0" 300 lb players much anymore. There is more of a focus on lean, strong, fast linemen. I think there is more height now then there used to be. You will see more players in the 6'2" to 6'5" range. It used to be odd to see a 6'4" lineman in our area, but it is not that uncommon now.

Last year Raceland had three linemen that were 6'3" or 6'4". Raceland had never had three linemen at the same time that size. This year the average of Raceland's line is 6'2", that is not bad, and is a big difference from what it would have been, say, 5 years ago, then the line would have averaged 5'10", or 6'0".

The players are getting taller, but leaner at the same time. You may see more six foot somethings, but less 300 pounders.

Heck, my son is in 8th grade and is 6'1 1/2" and 235 pounds. They just make them bigger now.

We must have different water on this side of the county then Ram, my friend, LOL. I hadn't thought of the lean side and I believe you are correct. both of my sons are 6'4 & 6'5 but they are much leaner than the 300 lb lineman that I saw earlier on in our "football time".

With the way players train year round, there's no doubt most are leaner and in better shape. I've recently seen kids drop 20 -30 pounds during the off-season and come back looking totally different with greater strength. Plus, there's so many off-season clinics and trainers out there to monitor the progress of each individual. This is something that wasn't around in my day. As for the height of players, well there's not much they can do about that. Either you're going to have it or not.
