Who's is the best,worst,biggest,etc.? Never been to any games in the 14th. Thanks.

Knott Central, and Perry Central have the largest gym. Letcher Central has the newest and has a pretty good atmosphere but I personally like Hazard's gym for a true High School Gym and also Breathitt Co. Of course I like tradition and Breathitt and hazard's gyms have a ton of it.

Knott has the best atmosphere and stadium seating, only thing wrong with Knott is that there is only one way in and one way out. Makes for a hard time getting in and out on busy nights. But the gym is perfect.

 

Perry has 2nd best seating and has great parking, in and out is very easy from several different directions.

 

Letcher is a nice place, but not nearly big enough for the number of kids they have in their school. They can barely put all the students in it. Also Parking lot is big enough, but again only one way in and out, makes for long lines when exiting afterwards.

 

Hazard don't have nearly enough seats and unless you know someone you have to park at the bottom of the hill and walk up about 1/2 a mile, totally ridiculous. They have enough room over at their high school, they need to build a new one with more parking.

 

Breathitt's is nice but doesn't have enough seats or enough parking.

 

Powell has the parking, but is not really a nice place to play.

I agree with your observations with the exception of your take on Powell County. Their gym seats 3500, third largest in the region behind Knott and Perry. They, along with Perry, have the best parking and exit routes after the sessions are over. Their gym is also one of the brightest lit facilities in the region, and one of the best maintained.

 

And you are right about Hazard. Tradition doesn't mean a whole lot to older people when it means they have to take that long, steep walk up the hill to the gym, or park miles away and be shuttled. Memorial also doesn't have enough seating. 2400 would be a packed house, and that includes the fans standing around the rail. That's not much more than Estill County's gym seats. Also, is it really fair to the other counties in the region that Perry County, with two schools only miles apart, gets to host the region twice in the 6 year rotation.

 

My suggestion is to make the rotation a four year rotation, with each district getting a turn. When it's the 53rd's turn, let their member schools vote for whichever site they want in their district. More than likely the 53rd would always choose Knott Central because of its size. The 54th would probably always vote for Perry Central for the same reason. The 55th would choose Breathitt County. And the 56th would have their's at Powell County. There you have it. Each district is represented once in a four year rotation, and it's fair to all the fans and teams because it equalizes out the travel issue. It also gives us the best possibility of venues every year.

Had some one tell me that had seen games at both Knott Central and the Mason County Fieldhouse, that Knott's was by far the better gym, size-wise and everything.

Perry Central has about 1000 enrollment.

When Knott Central opened in the mid-1970's (after the consolidation of Knott County High, Carr Creek, and Hindman) they also had around a 1000 students. But due to the outward migration from Eastern Kentucky in the last 25 years, Knott Central is now around 700 enrollment. One of their administrators told me a few years ago that they have fairly large crowds at their games, but because the gym seats over 5000, it seems like they have hardly anyone there.
