South Oldham 68 North Oldham 31

Featured Replies

final Jordann McGuffin 19 points, Jasmine Whitfield 15 points to lead SOHS.

Good to see the lady dragons get on track last night. They came out ready to play and jumped on them early. Jasmine and Jordann played very well together and will only continue to get better as the season progresses. North has a nice freshman player who did a good job for them - she was # 33 but I cannot recall her name.

#33 is Nicole Bryant, and she should be a good one for North before all is said and done.

South's full-court press - and their half-court trap - have been brutally efficient in two games vs. 8th Region foes...forcing over 30 turnovers by both Shelby County and now North... They really had the Lady Mustangs looking over their shoulder for the green jerseys last night...and as a result, early on, even when North got gimme looks, they often missed. The Lady Dragons, however, still need to get their own turnover average down.

South's 1-4 record is very deceiving. Yes, the freshmen are still, well, freshmen at times, and the turnover totals continue to be way too high...but their four losses were to teams that were 21-2 combined prior to last night's games... (CAL, Highlands, Shelby County, and Floyd Central, IN)... They had a halftime lead on CAL and lost by 10, and outplayed and should have beaten Shelby in a one-point loss.

After having seen South twice now, I'm impressed. They're certainly not "there" yet, but they are far ahead of where I expected them to be at this time of the year after having lost so many to graduation.

North is still behind a bit in terms of player cohesion on the court due to injuries. Last night was the first time they've had their entire roster "healthy", and as a result, they're not all on the same page yet. I'm curious to see how this North team looks in February. I think they have a real chance to make some noise now that all the pieces are back in place. North has never played in the region tournament...this might be their breakthrough season.

Good luck to both teams the rest of the way! We'll see South again on Saturday and Monday in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the South Oldham Hoopfest.

Congrats to South Oldham. I don't think you will see North in the regional tournament in 2009 either. That's a pretty solid district.

Nice win for SO

Traditionally, yes, this has been a solid district...but right now, it's a very topsy-turvy one.

South has an 11 team roster with 5 freshmen, one of whom starts at PG...Trimble only has 8 players on the roster, and only one over 5'7"...Oldham has a new coach and is still looking for their first win under the new system, although the talent and coaching appears to be there for a solid run...North Oldham is just now getting everyone healthy, and has two first-time varsity players starting at C and SF.

The wins have been few and far between so far for these teams in the district. North and Oldham are winless; South is 1-4, and Trimble is 1-3. I've seen all but Trimble; Pegasus will air the Oldham - Trimble game this Friday night, so I'll see the Lady Raiders then.

Based on what I've seen from North (2 games), South (2 games), Oldham (1 game) and Trimble (lots of reading), I would rank the district like this right now:

South Oldham - Lady Dragons look to be the class of the District right now.

Oldham County - Beaudrie is one of the best in the region, and the front line is developing.

Trimble County - lack of size and depth is a concern

North Oldham - can they stay healthy? It's been an annual ritual for North.

That said, I think the differences between 2, 3, and 4 are pretty minuscule right now. All - in part because of the youth - will be much different teams in February and March...
